SUMMARY:MLK March\, Rally\, and Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Annual Community March celebrates Dr. Martin Luther King’s legacy while uplifting diversity and multi-culturalism in our city. All businesses\, non-profit organizations and individuals are invited to march and celebrate Dr. King’s legacy. \nThe MLK Community March kicks off on Monday\, January 19\, 2026 at 9:30 a.m. on the south steps of the State Capitol for a rally. \nAt the conclusion of the program we will march to Huston-Tillotson University for the MLK Festival. \nOnce the MLK March arrives at Huston-Tillotson University\, the celebration will continue with the MLK Community Festival. \nThe family friendly festival will include all types of vendors and local musical artists to make this year’s celebration the best ever! Come prepared to have a great time. \nThe festival will be from 11am-3pm at Huston-Tillotson University at 900 Chicon St\, Austin\, TX 78702. \nThis year\, we are asking marchers to help by donating can goods or non-perishable food items\, which will be donated to the Central Texas Food Bank. Help to give to those in need by helping the Central Texas Food Bank fill their shelves with non-perishable food items. “True compassion is more than flinging a coin to a beggar; it is not haphazard and superficial. It comes to see that an edifice which produces beggars needs restructuring.” — Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr. \nReceptacles will be available at both the Capitol and the festival at Huston-Tillotson University.

SUMMARY:Artist Reception: Reuse On the Runway\, RIP Austin Matchbook Memorial\, and Feasts in the Absurd
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the opening of three new exhibitions at the Julia C. Butridge Gallery! Enjoy an evening of art\, conversation\, and community as we showcase Reuse On The Runway: The Exhibit by Austin Creative Reuse\, RIP Austin Matchbook Memorial by Ashley Rose Marino\, and Feasts in the Absurd by Lin Zagorski Latimer. \nAbout RIP Austin Matchbook Memorial – RIP to your Austin favorites. The RIP Austin Matchbook Memorial is our community’s collective matchbook collection\, featuring graphite illustrations of places from Austin’s past paired with stories from those who remember them fondly. Each hand-drawn matchbook transforms a shared memory into a keepsake\, representing the city’s homegrown nostalgia and the voices of Austinites old and new. \nAbout Feasts in the Absurd – Feasts in the Absurd is a playful and visually indulgent exploration of food’s aesthetics and its place in our cultural\, emotional\, and sensory experiences. The exhibition contrasts hyperrealistic depictions of modern processed foods with surreal and fantastical interpretations\, revealing the strange duality of what we eat today. Through bold color\, vivid detail\, and a fusion of realism\, surrealism\, and pop art\, Lin Zagorski Latimer invites viewers to reflect on food as both sustenance and spectacle. \nAbout Reuse On The Runway – Can fashion be both stunning and sustainable? Reuse On The Runway reveals the answer. Experience highlights from Austin Creative Reuse’s signature fashion show\, where artists renew and transform materials – fabric remnants\, architectural samples\, pop tabs\, ticket stubs\, newspapers\, and more – into extraordinary creations. Explore the ingenuity of upcycled fashion design\, challenging conventions and inspiring a future where creativity and conservation collide.
