SUMMARY:State of Drought: Conversations On the Future Of Water In Texas
DESCRIPTION:The Texas Observer is hosting “State of Drought: Conversations On The Future Of Water In Texas.” \nAmerica’s Future Is Texas\,” a recent New Yorker article by Lawrence Wright proclaimed. As a changing climate threatens the whole country with deeper droughts and more furious floods that put ever more people and property at risk\, Texas has become a bellwether state for water debates. Will there be enough water for everyone? Is there the will to take the steps necessary to defend ourselves against the sea? Is it in the nature of Americans to adapt to nature in flux? \nThe most comprehensive—and comprehensible—book on contemporary water issues\, A Thirsty Land delves deep into the challenges faced not just by Texas but by the nation as a whole\, as we struggle to find a way to balance the changing forces of nature with our own ever-expanding needs. Part history\, part science\, part adventure story\, and part travelogue\, this book puts a human face on the struggle to master that most precious and capricious of resources\, water. Seamus McGraw goes to the taproots\, talking to farmers\, ranchers\, businesspeople\, and citizen activists\, as well as to politicians and government employees. Their stories provide chilling evidence that Texas—and indeed the nation—is not ready for the next devastating drought\, the next catastrophic flood. Ultimately\, however\, A Thirsty Land delivers hope. This deep dive into one of the most vexing challenges facing Texas and the nation offers glimpses of the way forward in the untapped opportunities that water also presents. \nJoin Observer editor Forrest Wilder\, rural reporter Christopher Collins\, environmental reporter Naveena Sadasivam and McGraw for a series of conversations about Texas’ convoluted and outdated water policy. \nYou can RSVP here.

SUMMARY:Think Global\, Act Local: Fostering Entrepreneurs With Purpose
DESCRIPTION:From SocialGood.us –\nHave you ever felt that you have too many passions and feel pressured to choose one to focus on? Or how about feeling overwhelmed because as you age up you still feel that you have not found one thing that you’re great at? \nIn April\, you learned about the 17 Global Goals for Sustainable Development and identified how they relate to Austin. In May\, you heard about the intersectionalities between the Gobal Goals and identified what features an online tool could have to spark positive impact and collaboration in our community. \nThis June we’re getting up close and personal. As an innovator and change catalyst\, you can’t truly be effective if you don’t understand what place you can play in this world and how you can add value. More importantly\, we believe that an individual’s mix of talents and gifts combine into creating new solutions that our world has never seen. In other words\, we will be much more effective in addressing the Global Goals if individuals find a way to balance their passion and what they are good at\, while being socially\, environmentally and financially sustainable. \n“Find a way to keep all of your passions in the mix\, invest wholeheartedly in them\, let them interact with one another and something unique will come out of it” This is the advice that Steven Tomlinson received when he asked which of his passions he should focus on. \nSteven Tomlinson will join us for an intimate conversation and offer practical and encouraging advice for social innovators discerning their path to purposeful entrepreneurship.Tomlinson will share his approach to creating purposeful\, passionate work — an approach that focuses on “practice” instead of “projects” and sees communion with others as the principle payoff.

SUMMARY:Free Class: Creating an English Style Cottage Garden in Texas
DESCRIPTION:From the Natural Gardener –\nSaturday\, June 30th at 10am – We are very excited to offer Heather Kendall\, a Natural Gardener superstar offering “Creating an English Style Cottage Garden in Texas”.   \nHave you ever wanted an English style cottage garden but not sure where to start?  She will review tips\, techniques and drought tolerant plant selection for an English garden with a Texas touch.  Heather once practiced environmental law for a firm in London\, she was inspired to leave the office and move into gardening when she started living in a 17thcentury cottage\, where the gardens were a blank slate.  She then trained as a gardener for a large country house estate (a bit like Downton Abbey!).  She has been in Texas for 5 years where she now works at the Natural Gardener as well as running a Garden Consultant and Landscape Design business.
