SUMMARY:Creek Crew Happy Hour: CodeNEXT And The Environment
DESCRIPTION:From the Save Barton Creek Association –\nJoin Angela Richter\, Executive Director of Save Barton Creek Association (SBCA) for a discussion on the environmental implications of CodeNEXT. SBCA has written comments on the first 2 drafts of the code and is working on recommendations to draft 3. Angela will be joined by a variety of folks knowledgeable about the environmental features of the code. \nWe will have a conversational facilitated discussion so that attendees can ask questions. The aim is for all involved to come away with a better understanding of what impact City code can have on our environment\, and what advocates should continue to ask for in this process. \nWe invite all who are curious about the code to attend this event. Hope to see you there! \nYou can find SBCA’s comments on draft 2 of the code here:\nhttp://www.savebartoncreek.org/codenextwater/\nThese comments are being refined to reflect changes in draft 3.

SUMMARY:350 Austin April Meeting
DESCRIPTION:From 350 Austin –\nPLEASE NOTE CHANGE IN VENUE!\nWe’ve spent the last few months at 350 Austin stepping back to consider the big picture–how to strategize\, organize\, and campaign for local progress on climate change. Now it’s time to roll up our sleeves and get to work! \nJoin us at our April meeting for more details on the steps we are taking to make Austin Energy (AE) fossil free fast. Our public utility has the potential to be a model for the rapid and just transition of electric grids towards clean renewable energy. We must demand that Austin Energy meet that challenge. \nHere is what to expect at the April meeting: \nWe’ll kick things off with an introduction to AE’s current status as well as where we want it to be. You will learn about the critical role of the Electric Utility Commission (EUC)\, and why one feasibility study is an important piece of the advocacy puzzle. \nThen we’ll split into some breakout groups\, where you’ll have an opportunity to get involved in direct advocacy at City Hall\, learn more about what City Hall and Austin Energy and you all have to do with each other\, and flex your creativity with some artful activism.

SUMMARY:Sierra Club Monthly Program: Public Horticulture In Austin
DESCRIPTION:From the Sierra Club –\nHappy Hour /food and beverages (http://www.scholzgarten.com/): 6-7 pm \nSocializing and informal discussions on current events: 6-7 pm \nAnnouncements and program begin at 7 pm \nPROGRAM: Public Horticulture in Austin\, with Cynthia Klemmer \nNature may seem intimidating or even threatening. If we are to preserve natural spaces and resources – especially in rapidly growing urban corridors – we must engage nature novices and encourage their support of natural spaces. Public horticulture offers a respite within the city\, and ‘entry level’ nature-based experiences that can resonate with a wide variety of audiences. Master planning efforts have begun for the Zilker Botanical Garden\, with opportunity for input that will help decide the future direction of this gem in the heart of Austin. \nNative Texan Cindy Klemmer is the Environmental Conservation Program Manager for Austin’s Parks & Rec Department\, managing/directing Zilker Botanical Garden/Community Gardens/Nature Preserves since September of 2016. Cindy holds a B.A. in Horticultural Sciences from Texas A&M\, a Master’s in Public Horticulture Administration with a certificate in Museum Studies from the University of Delaware\, and a Ph.D in Horticultural Sciences from Texas A&M . She has previously worked at Chicago Botanic Garden; the National Gardening Association; Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden outside Charlotte\, NC; Fairchild Tropical Botanical Garden in Coral Gables\, FL; Bok Tower Garden in Lake Wales\, FL; and the San Antonio Botanic Garden. She and her husband Mike are thrilled to be back in Texas after 25 years of touring and gardening around the country\, and are happily planning yet another garden south of Austin in Buda\, TX. \nConsider biking\, carpooling\, or taking Cap Metro (http://www.capmetro.org/planner) to the meeting. Free parking is available after 6pm on San Jacinto and nearby streets.

SUMMARY:Keep Austin Beautiful Day
DESCRIPTION:From Keep Austin Beautiful –\nEach April\, Keep Austin Beautiful hosts Clean Sweep\, a county-wide service day spanning 130+ sites in 31 zip codes throughout Austin and Travis County. As Clean Sweep has grown over the years we have noted that is has become more than just a cleanup day. Volunteers are planting gardens\, restoring riparian habitats\, removing graffiti\, and more. To recognize all the work volunteers are doing on this day we have decided to formally rename Clean Sweep to Keep Austin Beautiful Day. \nWe hope you will join us on Saturday\, April 14th for the newly launched day of community service for the first time as Keep Austin Beautiful Day.  \nIn previous years\, the cleanup and project day has resulted in over 26 tons of trash removed by 4\,000 plus volunteers who contribute 8\,700 combined service hours. Keeping with tradition\, the network of projects will followed by a not-to-be-missed volunteer party featuring free t-shirts\, lunch\, live music\, children’s environmental activities\, a unique object contest\, door prizes\, and more! \nYou can sign up to volunteer here.

SUMMARY:Austin’s 4th Annual Soil Kitchen
DESCRIPTION:From Austin Resource Recovery –\nThe Brownfields Revitalization Office\, a division of Austin Resource Recovery\, supports local food gardeners by once again sponsoring free soil testing at this year’s East Austin Garden Fair. Soil testing is an important start for preparing garden beds before planting. SUMMARY:Austin's 4th Annual Soil Kitchen
DESCRIPTION:From Austin Resource Recovery –\nThe Brownfields Revitalization Office\, a division of Austin Resource Recovery\, supports local food gardeners by once again sponsoring free soil testing. Soil testing is an important start for preparing garden beds before planting. Understanding what is actually in the soil provides gardeners with the information they need to successfully grow healthy crops for their families. The Soil Kitchen also provides tips for the best types of plants and gardens based on sample results and how to reduce pollution from common fertilizers. \nInformation about how to bring your soil sample in to be tested is available here.
