SUMMARY:Sierra Club Monthly Program: Creating An Electric Grid That Runs On Clean Energy
DESCRIPTION:From the Sierra Club –\nHappy Hour /food and beverages (http://www.scholzgarten.com/): 6pm-7 pm \nSocializing and informal discussions on current events: 6pm-7 pm \nAnnouncements and program begin at 7 pm \nPROGRAM: Creating an Electric Grid That Runs Completely on Clean Energy … in the Real World\, with Paul Robbins \nA world beset by global warming needs a dramatic conversion of its energy consumption and production infrastructure. Misunderstanding about how to accomplish this conversion is pervasive. Carbon-free solutions\, as well as challenges to clean energy techniques and technologies\, need to be well understood by the environmentalists advocating their use. This presentation will summarize the fundamental requirements necessary to create the electric grid for this century. \nPaul Robbins is a long-time environmental activist and consumer advocate. He began his career in 1977 as a volunteer opposing the South Texas Nuclear Project. Since then\, he has been researching and advocating for alternative technologies and policies to promote clean energy\, energy and water conservation\, and resource management. He helped start Austin’s clean energy programs in the 1980s\, and was instrumental in persuading the City of Austin to purchase the majority of its electricity from wind power. In 2007\, the Austin City Council named a downtown district chilling plant after Paul for his work over the decades. He has won several awards including: Austin Sierra Club – Outstanding Achievement 2003\, Keep Austin Beautiful award for Individual Achievement 2005\, Best of Austin awards from the Austin Chronicle in 2010\, 2011\, and 2013. \nConsider biking\, carpooling\, or taking Cap Metro (http://www.capmetro.org/planner) to the meeting. Free parking is available after 6pm on San Jacinto and nearby streets.

SUMMARY:Free Class: Seeds! Saving and Starting
DESCRIPTION:From the Natural Gardener –\nSaturday\, January 13th at 10am –TWO GREAT CLASSES IN ONE  “Seeds! Saving and Starting” \n  \nSince before we had commercial seed companies\, home gardeners and farmers have been saving seeds and doing their own plant breeding\, developing cultivars that were well-suited to their own palates\, as well as the microclimates in their own gardens.  To complete the cycle\, they knew how to start those seeds the next season.  Come learn how to save and then start your own vegetable seeds to save money\, preserve genetic diversity\, and ensure you’ll never be without that favorite vegetable variety. Linda will teach us the tricks to saving and starting seeds successfully\, so we can have the freedom of planting what we want when we want\, and the security of always being in control our own food supply.  \n  \nLinda Wall is the AustinGardenConsultant.com\, a horticulturist at The Natural Gardener\, blogger at TheRedneckHippie.com\, and has grown vegetables for over 30 years on her family farm in Spicewood.
