DESCRIPTION:From the Sierra Club –\nHappy Hour /food and beverages: 6-7 pm \nSocializing and informal discussions on current events:  6-7 pm \nAnnouncements and program begin at 7 pm \nProgram:  The Science Behind Texas’ Climate Change \nJay Banner will discuss Texas’ unique challenge of being a climatic hotspot and population growth center.  He will present his research on reconstructing past climate change in Texas (tree ring and speleothem studies)\, how past droughts compare with present and projected future droughts\, their economic impacts\, and his experience with the Texas legislature on climate adaptation bills. \nJay Banner was born and raised in New York City and was interested in science from an early age. He attended the University of Pennsylvania and pursued graduate studies in geology and geochemistry at the State University of New York at Stony Brook\, where he received his MS and Ph.D.  Dr. Banner was a post-doctoral fellow at the California Institute of Technology and Louisiana State University. He joined the faculty in the Department of Geological Sciences at the University of Texas at Austin in 1990.  He is presently the Fred M. Bullard Professor in the Jackson School of Geosciences and Director of the Environmental Science Institute at UT-Austin.  Among the recent honors he has received are the UT Board of Regents Outstanding Teaching Award (2013) and the Texas Exes Teaching Award (2012). \nConsider biking\, carpooling\, or taking Cap Metro to the meeting. Free parking is available after 6pm on San Jacinto and nearby streets.

DESCRIPTION:Green is the New Black\, a sustainability-focused student organization at Huston-Tillotson University\, is hosting a free film screening on February 10th. Snacks will be provided by the HT Student Government Association. The event is open the general public and will be held in the DL Auditorium.  The film that will be screened is\, “Plastic Paradise.” \nAbout “Plastic Paradise” : \nThousands of miles away from civilization\, Midway Atoll is in one of the most remote places on earth. And yet its become ground zero for The Great Pacific Garbage Patch\, syphoning plastics from three distant continents. In this independent documentary film\, journalist/filmmaker Angela Sun travels on a personal journey of discovery to uncover this mysterious phenomenon. Along the way she meets scientists\, researchers\, influencers\, and volunteers who shed light on the effects of our rabid plastic consumption and learns the problem is more insidious than we could have ever imagined.

DESCRIPTION:TreeFolks\, in partnership with the City of Austin and with additional support from the Apache Foundation\, Circuit of the Americas\, and Sustainable Food Center\, will be giving away 450 free fruit trees at the Sunset Valley Farmers’ Market on February 13 from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. The event is free and open to the public\, and the trees are available on a first come first served basis. \nMost of the trees are designated for Austin Energy customers\, but thanks to Circuit of the Americas\, we will have 100 trees available for non AE customers. We’ll provide 2 trees per household. Bring your electric bill or driver’s license to prove Austin residency for trees. \nWe’ll have Satsuma orange\, fig\, peach\, pear\, plum\, persimmon\, and/or pomegranate trees. We’re going to be giving out all our remaining fruit trees for this event\, so the exact quantity and varieties available is subject to change. Everything we have has been selected for vigor and adaptability to Austin’s soil and climate though.
