SUMMARY:March Unlearning Circle: Analyzing Power
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on zoom\, March 11\, from 10am-12:00 for our Unlearning Circle Analyzing Power.\n \nAs we move back into unlearning circles this year\, we wanted to lean into our roots as a group committed to organizing to undo racism with grounding in organizing principles from both the People’s Institute for Survival and Beyond (PISAB) and Showing Up for Racial Justice (SURJ). For the next three months\, we will collectively engage with these principles and how they shape us as individuals and collectively inform our organizing to undo racism in all the communities we’re a part of.\n \nThe three month ULC series includes: \nMarch: PISAB Principles with a focus on Analyzing Power which helps us see more clearly how racism is woven into our history\, systems\, and institutions. This profoundly shapes all our lived experiences and in turn how we organize.\n \nApril: SURJ values with a focus on mutual interest and the need for us as white folks to get clear on how we have ‘skin in the game’ of undoing racism and creating communities where folks of all races can thrive.\n \nMay: How do we define organizing? Do we see ourselves as organizers? And what skills and supports can we cultivate together to support moving into organizing and mobilizing collective power?\n \nJoin us on March 11 for the first part of this series on the PISAB anti racism organizing principles with a focus on Analyzing Power.

SUMMARY:Fostering Equity In Gentrified Communities
DESCRIPTION:Gentrification is pushing People of Color out of the core of many major cities and their youth further away from culturally competent educational resources. Large tech employers are often able to afford and recruit diverse talent but have a much tougher time retaining them. When surveyed on why they leave\, many cite a lacking sense of authentic community connections. We’ll explore these challenges and how organizations are addressing them via education and workforce development programs.\n \nThis special session is FREE and open to the public. You do not need to have a SXSW badge to attend.

SUMMARY:Barton Springs Road Bridge Project Open House
DESCRIPTION:Austin Public Works is providing the community with a rescheduled in-person update on efforts to address the existing bridge over Barton Springs Rd. near Zilker Park. Following a postponement in March due to weather\, this meeting will take place Tuesday\, April 4\, at the McBeth Recreation Center. The project team will share information on the needed improvements and gather community input.\n \nFor those who are unable to attend\, a virtual public meeting is available here.\n \n—————– \nAbout the Barton Springs Road Bridge Project: \nThe City of Austin is planning for improvements to Barton Springs Road Bridge to provide mobility enhancements for all users. \nWhile the existing Barton Springs Road bridge is in fair condition structurally\, many of its features are functionally obsolete and require rehabilitation or replacement to ensure safety and longevity. Given that the existing bridge presents mobility challenges for vehicles\, bikes and pedestrians\, this project will provide needed mobility enhancements for all users. Intersection improvements to nearby Barton Springs Road and Azie Morton Drive are necessary as part of this project.\n\n \nIn November 2020\, Austin voters approved $102 million for major infrastructure projects\, with the possibility of allocating a portion of that funding to address the Barton Springs Road Bridge. The project is currently funded for completion of preliminary engineering\, including finalizing a Bridge Conceptual Engineering Report (BCER)\, as well as developing a design for a preferred solution (rehabilitation of existing bridge or reconstruction of a new structure.) Future funding needs to be identified to move forward with construction.

SUMMARY:ACT Lobby Day
DESCRIPTION:The Alliance for a Clean Texas (ACT) will hold a Lobby Day\, with Texans from across the state coming together to call on the Legislature to strengthen environmental protections. We hope you can join us!\n  \n\nSign up to attend and we’ll schedule meetings with your state representative and senator and invite you to an issues briefing on April 6.\n \nKey Issues: \n\nThe state’s main environmental regulator\, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ)\, is currently going through “Sunset review\,” which means the Legislature must vote to reauthorize the agency to continue its work. This provides a unique opportunity to reform the agency to improve public participation in the permitting process\, raise penalties against polluters\, and clean up our air\, water\, land and climate.\n \n\nOur air is polluted\, with about half of Texas’s population living in areas that fail federal standards for smog pollution. About a third of our rivers\, lakes and streams are unsafe for swimming and fishing.\n \n\nTCEQ is the largest statewide environmental agency in the country\, but it is broken. Called a “reluctant regulator” by the Sunset Commission\, the TCEQ too often rubber stamps pollution permits without properly giving the public a chance to weigh in. TCEQ rarely fines companies who violate the law; when they do\, the fines are often just a slap on the wrist.\n \nSolutions: \n\nACT is supporting a robust Sunset Bill that requires TCEQ to raise the maximum daily fines from $25\,000 to $40\,000 for lawbreakers\, follow federal law on public participation in permitting and consider cumulative impacts in all major permits.
