DESCRIPTION:Our monthly Austin Sierra Club meeting will be online via Zoom.\n \nWe’ll start off with Announcements on current events… Tonite’s main program is The Austin-Bastrop River Corridor Partnership: 19 years of Change along the Colorado River with Kevin Anderson\, Ph.D. \, Center for Environmental Research at Hornsby Bend.\n \nThis presentation will look at past and present efforts to foster the goals of the Austin-Bastrop River Corridor Partnership and look towards the future as Teslandia and other development expands along the Colorado River corridor.\n \nIn February 2003 the Austin Water Center for Environmental Research at Hornsby Bend hosted a meeting to discuss the future of the Colorado River corridor downstream of Austin along the 90-miles of the Colorado River from Longhorn Dam to Smithville\, in light of the announcement that eastern Travis County was the “Desired Development Zone” for the growth of Austin. That meeting was the start of the Austin-Bastrop River Corridor Partnership\, which is not a non-profit organization\, but rather an informal partnership of governmental agencies\, nonprofit organizations\, businesses\, landowners\, and concerned citizens committed to advancing a shared vision for the river corridor. www.facebook.com/austinbastroprivercorridor\n \nDr. Kevin M. Anderson has been the manager of the Austin Water Center for Environmental Research at Hornsby Bend since 2000. His environmental career began on a Pennsylvania farm\, and it has since ranged from running an organic farm in Potomac\, Maryland to helping start a river conservation foundation in Northeastern Hungary as a Peace Corps Volunteer. He received his Master’s degree in Philosophy from Ohio University. He was beginning his Ph.D. dissertation in Philosophy at the University of Texas at Austin in 1995 when he met some UT geographers who encouraged him to switch programs; he completed his Ph.D. in Geography from UT Austin.\n \nThe URL to click on and join the meeting will be displayed after you RSVP. SUMMARY:February UWSA Unlearning Circle
DESCRIPTION:Unlearning racism is necessarily vulnerable. It requires us to take accountability for the ways in which our behavior can cause harm. Yet many of us struggle to be vulnerable and take accountability out of fear that we will be punished and shamed if we get it “wrong.” So how can we create spaces in which we can be vulnerable and not punish ourselves or each other?\n \nAs we work together to undo racism and build a just society\, we often find ourselves falling into the same traps we are trying to dismantle. We can use shame and blame in an attempt to get people “on board” with the cause\, oftentimes without even realizing what we are doing.\n \nJoin us for our February Unlearning Circle as we discuss what it means to apply transformative justice principles in our own lives. We’ll explore what we were taught about punishment and justice\, and how punishment shows up in our own lives. We’ll take time to collectively imagine what a world would look like with accountability\, but without punishment. We will conclude by identifying small actions we can take towards healing ourselves and making a better world for future generations.\n \nThe following resources can be helpful in preparing for the discussion. As we continue to gather to critically examine our own participation in cultures of dominance\, we build our capacity to show up as individuals and as a city-wide community network for Black\, Indigenous and people of color-led anti-racist efforts in a positive and accountable way. The Unlearning Circles are an opportunity for white identifying people to explore white supremacy culture and our role and responsibilities in undoing racism. We welcome and recognize the gift of the presence of any People of Color who choose to join us.

The summit’s goal is to uncover the true impacts of Winter Storm Uri on the storm’s one-year anniversary.\n\n \nThis summit will be held in the same format as a hearing\, in which we are inviting testimony from across the state of Texas to tell us about their experiences during Winter Storm Uri. The testimony will include medical experts\, emergency personnel\, government officials\, Texas residents\, and extreme weather experts.\n\n \nAs we learn more about the impact of our power outages across the state\, we are learning that the results of the power outages are more devastating to Texans than we have previously been made aware at the Capitol.\n\n \nI invite you to join us at the Capitol virtually. I also invite you to share the event with others to ask them to tune into the hearing\, which will be shared over Facebook and on Youtube. Finally\, we want to hear about your experience during the winter storm. SUMMARY:Resilience Hubs: Designing Critical and Equitable Community Infrastructure in Response to Climate Disasters
DESCRIPTION:Planet Texas 2050 invites you to a semester-long Resilience Roundtable panel discussion series featuring leaders across the academic\, non-profit\, government\, advocacy\, and commercial sectors. Roundtables will include 2-3 speakers and a moderator from the Planet Texas 2050 leadership team and will be organized around topic areas drawn from the City of Austin’s climate equity plan as well other topics that intersect with the issues of resilience\, climate justice\, disaster response\, biodiversity\, environmental humanities\, and more. Each panel discussion will be followed by an audience Q&A session and collective brainstorming towards continued action.\n \n\n Resilience Hubs: Designing Critical and Equitable Community Infrastructure in Response to Climate Disasters\n \n\n \nWhen Winter Storm Uri hit Texas in February 2021\, it exposed the vulnerabilities in our water and energy systems\, but also the unequal vulnerabilities in our communities along the lines of income\, housing status\, immigration status\, race\, age\, and disability. In the aftermath of the storm\, an idea that gained traction among a suite of solutions is the development of “Resilience Hubs.” As community-serving facilities designed to support residents and coordinate resource distribution and services before\, during\, or after a disruption\, resilience hubs\, if designed well\, can equitably enhance community resilience while reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving local quality of life. The City of Austin is currently planning the design and implementation of resilience hubs in different parts of the city. It is imperative to center equity in the process of developing community infrastructure in order to best prepare and respond to future climate disasters such as heat\, flooding\, wildfires\, and cold.\n \nJoin us in a conversation between researchers\, community groups\, and city officials that seeks to bridge community-articulated needs to research and action.\n  \nSpeakers  \nMarc Coudert is the Environmental Program Manager at the City of Austin Office of Sustainability. Marc works with city departments to embed climate adaptation strategies into long term operation and asset management planning. In this role\, he also supports community organizers to increase climate adaptation in the Eastern Crescent. Marc received a Certificate in Climate Change and Health from the Yale School of Public Health\, a Master of Science in Sustainable Design from the University of Texas at Austin School of Architecture and a Bachelor of Science in Urban Planning from Arizona State University Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts. He is a member of the NACCHO Global Climate Change Workgroup.\n \nFrances Acuña is the Climate Resilience Lead Organizer for Go Austin/Vamos Austin (GAVA). She has lived in southeast Austin for 25 years. She began advocating for the Dove Springs community in 2010 and in 2012\, she became a Texas Certified Community Healthworker and started getting involved with GAVA as a community leader. She also worked with fellow community members serving as first responders during the October 2013 and 2015 floods in Dove Springs. In 2017\, Frances joined GAVA as a Community Organizer where she worked to increase access to healthy food and physical activity. Later\, with continued floods and residents being displaced due to flooding and infrastructure issues\, she became the Climate Resilience Lead Organizer where she concentrates her efforts bridging the communication gap between residents and stakeholders\, emphasizing response and responsibility where equity and public safety is a mutual priority. When she is not spending her time in the community organizing or meeting with stakeholders\, you can find her in her garden or spending time with her family.\n \nKatherine Lieberknecht is an assistant professor in the School of Architecture at The University of Texas at Austin. She researches urban water resources planning\, metropolitan-scaled green infrastructure planning\, and urban climate planning. Dr. Lieberknecht teaches courses on sustainable land use planning\, water resources planning\, and urban ecology. Prior to joining the faculty\, she worked in regional land conservation. She received her Bachelor of Science in Biology from the College of William and Mary\, a Master in Environmental Management from Yale University\, and a Ph.D. in City and Regional Planning from Cornell University. Dr. Lieberknecht was the inaugural chair of Planet Texas 2050\, The University of Texas at Austin’s first grand challenge research program. She is the faculty lead for the Texas Metro Observatory\, a Planet Texas 2050 research project and co-lead for the Planet Texas 2050 Flagship Project Equitable and Regenerative Cities in a Post-Carbon Future.

DESCRIPTION:Austin’s City Council and City Manager want your opinion on the Austin Police Department’s (APD) rules related to how and when officers use their camera equipment. The Office of Police Oversight (OPO) is organizing events and surveys to collect feedback from community members. The Office of Police Oversight is separate from the Austin Police Department and provides impartial oversight of APD’s conduct\, practices\, and rules.\n \nFrom February 1\, 2022 – April 1\, 2022\, OPO will engage with community groups to gather feedback. We will submit the input we collect to the City Manager\, City Council\, and the Austin Police Department in late 2022. This Zoom event series will be an opportunity to share your thoughts on the APD policies related to body-worn cameras and dashboard cameras. Body-worn cameras are small cameras worn by officers to capture what the officers see and hear while dashboard cameras are cameras installed in police vehicles.\n \nIn February\, OPO will host a series of virtual public events\, including an educational presentation on current APD body-worn camera and dashboard camera policies. Meetings will be multilingual – English\, Spanish\, and American Sign Language – with other languages available upon request. SUMMARY:Sierra Club Monthly Program: Capital Area Master Naturalists
DESCRIPTION:Our monthly Austin Sierra Club meeting will be online via Zoom.\n \nWe’ll start off with Announcements on current events… Tonite’s main program is Capital Area Master Naturalists (CAMN)\, with Lisa Audiffred\, David Cook and Andrew Harrod.\n \nCAMN is a chapter of the Texas Master Naturalist (TMN) program\, a collaboration between Texas Parks & Wildlife and Texas A&M AgriLife Extension. The program provides instruction and volunteer opportunities to adults who wish to learn about and demonstrate the principles of sustainable use\, conservation\, and maintenance of our natural resources. Master Naturalists are people dedicated to stewardship of the land and management of the natural resources entrusted to our care.\n \nChapters provide expert-led training for members on their local ecosystems as well as many advanced training opportunities. Members spend time volunteering in their communities by leading nature activities at community events\, giving educational talks\, leading interpretive hikes\, and helping in eco-restoration work on Austin’s parks and preserves. https://camn.org/\n \nLisa Audiffred grew up in South Louisiana spending most of her childhood playing in the woods and creeks around her home. She developed a love for nature and with that a desire to protect the natural spaces around her and educate others in how to do the same. She has degrees in Business and Education and spent 15+ years educating children. Lisa joined the Capital Area Master Naturalists in 2021\, to learn about ecosystems in her adopted Texas home\, and to find ways to contribute to natural resource conservation work. She now spends most of her time volunteering around Travis County and serving as CAMN President. She also enjoys dancing Argentine Tango\, traveling\, and spending time on Austin’s many beautiful trails and waterways.\n \nDavid Cook is a retired Project Manager following 30+ years in information technology. He now enjoys running\, birding\, nature photography\, and exploring what Rachel Carson describes as “the sense of wonder” with the natural world. He is a recently certified Texas Master Naturalist in the Capital Area chapter and serves on the board of the Bull Creek Foundation.\n \nAndrew Harrod grew up going to many of the parks in and around Austin\, and this helped shape him into the naturalist and advocate for the environment that he is today. Andrew has a degree in Wildlife & Fisheries Sciences from Texas A&M. His professional background is in education with a focus in environmental education. He joined the Capital Area Master Naturalists in 2019 to learn new things\, meet other naturalists\, and expand his network. After a couple years of volunteering on the Austin Water Quality Protection Lands\, he now works for them in the Austin Wildlands Division as an Environmental Conservation Information Specialist. In this position he coordinates hikes and some volunteer activities in the Balcones Canyonlands Preserve. When not working you might find Andrew leading hikes for Austin Sierra Club or Save Barton Creek Association.\n \nThe URL to click on and join the meeting will be displayed after you RSVP.
