SUMMARY:Save the Earth Day Weekend
DESCRIPTION:Free to the public\, local entrepreneurs encourage fans to bring the fam’\, come party for a cause.  \nLocal Artists to Headline 3-day Music Event in honor of Earth Day\nBuda\, Texas\n22-24 April 2016\n \nLocal bands and local entrepreneurs are calling on music fans of all ages to join the party\, and help save the planet in the process\, by showcasing a one-off gig at Tavern on Main. “Save the Earth Day Weekend\,” begins this Friday\, Earth Day\, and runs through the weekend. The free event is the first of its kind and will feature a host of local artists\, musician and brewmaster alike. \nFans can revel in a rare appearance by Uncle Lucius frontman Kevin Galloway\, rock with Madra\, featuring Rory Hancock\, son of Texas songwriting legend Butch Hancock\, and bid a Texas-sized farewell to Lew Card\, as the beloved musician is set to make his final appearance in the Austin area. Popular local artists like Bukka Allen and Mayeux and Broussard round out the soundtrack; meanwhile\, rock stars of the Texas craft brew scene will wash it all down. Fan-favorite breweries Real Ale\, Pedernales\, Oasis\, Middleton\, and Karbach Brewing Company are among those sponsoring the event\, with free tastings offered throughout the weekend. \nBuda restaurant/music venue The Tavern on Main and BioIntegrity.net have organized the showcase as part of Earth Day awareness\, promoting local artists while promoting a worldly cause. “We know people everywhere care deeply about the future of our environment\, and Tavern on Main is the perfect place to gather and celebrate that\,” says founder of BioIntegrity.net\, Chris Searles\, “Tavern on Main serves-up some of the best food\, music\, and atmosphere in Texas.” \n“Our goal this weekend is to relax\, have a good time\, and connect people to the solutions most impactful to turning the corner on today’s environmental challenges.” \nThe weekend also features a “mini-fest” of young talent. Up and coming bands will kick things off Saturday around noon\, so parents are encouraged to bring the kiddos and get ready to rock in the name of Mama Earth. In between sets\, music fans can cheer on their favorite athletes who are bringing the heat and some serious cuteness… The 19th Annual Buda Country Fair and Wiener Dog Races will be held the same weekend\, just a short walk over to Buda City Park. \nTo learn more\, visit the website at budatavern.com or contact Chris Searles\, at 512.789.4652 or by email\, chris.searles “at” biointegrity “dot” net. \nThe event begins Friday\, April 22 at 4pm and continues all weekend til 7pm Sunday. With plenty of free parking available\, guests are encouraged to park in the neighborhoods surrounding Main Street. Music and beer tasting schedules can be seen on the Facebook page\, “Save the Earth Day Weekend.” \nBioIntegrity is a globally-minded company with Central Texas roots\, working to protect and restore Earth’s most vital ecosystems. The young company has already achieved some tremendous successes; namely\, helping to save an astonishing 8\,500 plant and animal species and over 45\,000 acres of Earth’s most climate-healing ecosystems. Attendees will have a chance to donate to a BioIntegrity promoted cause during the event. Meanwhile\, Buda’s Tavern on Main has long since provided a loving home for local musicians\, and as a socially responsible business itself\, its match to BioIntegrity is one made in “green” heaven. \nMore info:  \nBudaTavern.com \nFacebook.com/events/1597193167264167/

SUMMARY:“Earth in the Elephant’s Footstep: Christianity\, Buddhism and the Environment.”
DESCRIPTION:From the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Austin –\nThe Buddha identified appamada\, typically translated as “diligent care\,” as the chief good or highest virtue in his teaching and practice. He likened appamada to the elephant’s footprint—just as the feet of all creatures fit into the elephant’s footprint\, so do all virtues fit into the most comprehensive good of all\, diligent care. This is also a virtue that Jesus of Nazareth embodied and taught—an active and diligent love and care for others\, especially the excluded and most vulnerable. It is a virtue that many people are articulating today—an active and diligent care for the earth. Tom VandeStadt will share how we can draw from both the Buddhist and Judeo-Christian traditions in our own care for the earth. \nTom VandeStadt is the pastor of the Congregational Church of Austin\, United Church of Christ\, and a student at Appamada Zen Center in Austin Texas. He has served on the Board of the Interfaith Environmental Network of Austin\, and is currently a member of Austin Interfaith. \n

SUMMARY:Solar Austin Happy Hour: Living Building Challenge
DESCRIPTION:From Solar Austin –\nPlan to be inspired by the solar opportunity within the Living Building Challenge™.  LBC is the built environment’s most rigorous performance standard. It calls for the creation of building projects at all scales that operate as cleanly\, beautifully and efficiently as nature’s architecture. The certification process under the Challenge requires that projects meet a series of ambitious performance requirements over a minimum of 12 months of continuous occupancy.  We will hear the living proof story of the building of the Bullitt Center\, a local\, place-based community transformation in Seattle. \nAround the world\, passionate individuals are advocating for restorative building practices. They’re spreading the word and removing barriers to change.  It begins by sharing resources and collaborating locally to pursue Living Building Challenge certification. \nJoin us to hear from Karen Knight about the Living Building Challenge!

SUMMARY:Eliot Tretter - Shadows of a Sunbelt City
DESCRIPTION:Book talk and signing with Book People \nAustin is generally depicted as one of the great urban success stories of the past half century – a place that has grown enormously through “creative class” strategies that emphasize diversity and environmental consciousness. Eliot Tretter’s book reinterprets this familiar story by exploring the racial and environmental underpinnings of the postindustrial knowledge economy. Join Book People for a lively and informative discussion of Austin’s past\, present\, and future. \n\nABOUT SHADOWS OF A SUNBELT CITY \nAustin\, Texas\, is often depicted as one of the past half century’s great urban success stories—a place that has grown enormously through “creative class” strategies emphasizing tolerance and environmental consciousness. In Shadows of a Sunbelt City\, Eliot Tretter reinterprets this familiar story by exploring the racial and environmental underpinnings of the postindustrial knowledge economy. He is particularly attentive to how the University of Texas—working with federal\, municipal\, and private-sector partners and acquiring the power of eminent domain—expanded its power and physical footprint. He draws attention to how the university’s real estate endeavors shaped the local economy and how the expansion and upgrading of the main campus occurred almost entirely at the expense of the more modestly resourced communities of color that lived in its path. \nThis book challenges Austin’s reputation as a bastion of progressive and liberal values\, notably with respect to its approach to new urbanism and issues of ecological sustainability. Tretter’s insistence on documenting and interrogating the “shadows” of this important city should provoke fresh conversations about how urban policy has contributed to Austin’s economy\, the way it has developed and changed over time\, and for whom it works and why. Joining a growing critical literature about universities’ effect on urban environments\, this book will be of interest to students at all levels in urban history\, political science\, economic and political geography\, public administration\, urban and regional planning\, and critical legal studies.

SUMMARY:Travis County Drug Take Back
DESCRIPTION:Danny Thomas\, Constable Precinct One\n4717 Heflin Lane\, Ste 127 Austin\, TX 78721 \n\n\nAdan Ballesteros\, Constable Precinct Two\n10409 Burnet Rd.\, Suite 150 Austin\, TX 78758 \n\n\nCarlos Lopez\, Constable Precinct Five\n1003 Guadalupe St Austin\, TX 78701 \n\n\n\nOn April 30 from 10am to 2pm three of Travis County Constable offices and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will give the public its 11th opportunity in six years to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired\, unused\, and unwanted prescription drugs. Bring your pills for disposal to the above at addresses. (The DEA cannot accept liquids or needles or sharps\, only pills or patches.) Constable Precinct Five has a permanent pharmaceutical kiosk available for drop-off during business hours for residents are unable to make the April 30th event. The service is free and anonymous\, no questions asked. \nLast September\, Americans turned in 350 tons (over 702\,000 pounds) of prescription drugs at more than 5\,000 sites operated by the DEA and more than 3\,800 of its state and local law enforcement partners. Overall\, in its 10 previous Take Back events\, DEA and its partners have taken in over 5.5 million pounds—more than 2\,750 tons—of pills. \nThis initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion\, misuse\, and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high\, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends\, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition\, Americans are now advised that their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines—flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash—both pose potential safety and health hazards. \nFor further information\, contact Shaun Auckland: shaun.auckland@co.travis.tx.us / 512-854-4496. \nTo find other Take-Back sites\, see: https://www.traviscountytx.gov or http://www.justice.gov/dea/index.shtml.

This June\, the City Council will consider adopting the South Central Waterfront Plan to ensure that great park spaces and public gathering places\, green streets\, and affordable housing are central to the future redevelopment of the area. \nThis is a family-friendly event with ice cream and refreshments\, a petting zoo\, face painting\, and live music to accompany visitors as they explore the latest information on what’s happening (and what’s to come) along Austin’s South Waterfront. \n  \nWhat is the South Central Waterfront Initiative? \nThe South Central Waterfront Initiative is a vision and cohesive set of recommendations to guide public and private development along the south side of Lady Bird Lake over the next 20-plus years. The goal is to ensure that\, as this area inevitably changes\, every increment of change will contribute to making a great new district that: \n\nEstablish a lively\, attractive pedestrian environment.\nExpand open space and create great public spaces.\nEnhance connections to and along the waterfront.\nInclude 10-20 percent new housing units as affordable.\n\n  \nEvent Information: \nWhere: Austin American Statesman Bat Park\, 305 S. Congress Ave \nWhen: Saturday\, April 30 between 10 AM and 4 PM \nSchedule: \n\nAmy’s Ice Cream from 11AM to 2PM\nPetting Zoo and face painting 11AM to 3PM\nLive music 11AM to 4PM (bands TBA – check back in a few days!)\nCreative art and place-making with local artist Ann Armstrong and Austin’s Atlas
