SUMMARY:Junk Journals: An Adventure in Paper
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, you’ll create two projects. We’ll use a blank greeting card to transform into an easy travel journal complete with pockets for all of those traveling treasures. We will also use a single pice of card stock to create a junk journal embellished to your particular tastes.\n \nWe will have a buffet of materials to personalize your creations. Come learn the art of junk journaling!\n \nThis workshop is best for folks over 12\, minors must be accompanied by a ticketed adult. Tickets can be purchased here. \n \nAbout the Instructor: \nSam Beckerman has been crafting since grade school. She spent her allowance on those fabric loops to make potholders and then her grandmother taught her to embroider. In junior high and high school\, she learned to tailor clothes and won ribbons at the County Fair. She retired at 50 and mainly works with paper now\, after voting mosaics off the island. During the early years of retirement\, she collected many blue ribbons at the Nevada State Fair. She’s especially proud of the wedding album (redone) that won a “best of show” award. She tells people it was the big blue one with the metal center – like they give the cows! She regularly taught Junk Journal workshops at Recycled Reads until they closed down for COVID in 2020.

SUMMARY:UWSA May 2022 Unlearning Circle
DESCRIPTION:We hope you will join us for May’s Unlearning Circle where we will explore our role in building accountable communities. Historically\, white folks relied heavily on police for everyday problems. But thanks to leadership and guidance from communities of color\, the tides are turning: every day\, more white people want to know how to abandon reliance on police.\n \nWe now recognize that policing does not solve our problems\, and worse yet\, is truly dangerous to all communities of color\, poor and working class folks\, disabled folks\, queer folks\, and more… We understand that policing is not only harmful today\, but also has clear\, traceable roots to horrific legacies of white supremacist violence: “catching” enslaved people running for freedom; forcing Indigenous peoples out of their lands\, in favor of white settlements; protecting white folks’ wealth.\n \nThese days\, many of us dream of a world without police and beyond policing. We know our communities thrive with more resources\, not more policing.\n \nHow do we envision community safety beyond policing? Black racial and economic justice activist and abolitionist Zach Norris thoughtfully titled his book\, “We keep us safe!” So\, what is our role in creating secure and just communities? How do we link our anti-racist values to our everyday neighborhood behaviors? Join us for our May Unlearning Circle to explore how we\, as white Austinites\, might contribute to safer\, more accountable communities.\n \nAbout our Unlearning Circles – \nUWSA’s first Unlearning Circle in the winter of 2017 was created as a place for white people to do the work of reflection and community self-education. As we continue to gather to critically examine our own participation in cultures of dominance\, we build our capacity to show up as individuals and as a city-wide community network for Black\, Indigenous and people of color-led anti-racist efforts in a positive and accountable way. The Unlearning Circles are an opportunity for white identifying people to explore white supremacy culture and our role and responsibilities in undoing racism. We welcome and recognize the gift of the presence of any People of Color who choose to join us.

SUMMARY:All Gender Spring Clothing Swap @ Central District Brewing
DESCRIPTION:On May 15\, 2022\, GOOD girls ATX is teaming up with Central District Brewing to host a Spring Clothing Swap to refresh our community’s wardrobes and welcome the warm weather with an exclusive beer release.\n  \nAll are welcome to join\, and participants must drop off items the week before the event in order to secure their spot. Scroll for details & instructions!\n  \nWhy swap your clothes with us? \nWe all deserve a wardrobe that suits our lifestyle & personality\, but neither our planet nor its people should suffer for it. The fashion industry is notoriously exploitative of natural resources and human labor. Furthermore\, less than 15% of clothes that are donated ever get re-homed? Most of it gets thrown away due to condition\, quality or oversupply. So how can we evolve our personal styles without feeling guilty about it?\n  \nBuying & selling at local resale shops or pop-ups is a great option because it gives your less-worn items a better chance at being re-homed & allows you to find new-to-you items while avoiding most of the initial harm caused by garment production. It also supports your local economy! Still\, it can take multiple trips & use up a lot of your time to get items sold or find the perfect addition to your wardrobe.\n  \nParticipating in a clothing swap enables you to connect deeper with your community\, meet new people & refresh your wardrobe at no cost (financial\, environmental or social)!\n  \nHow the Clothing Swap works: \n\nGather up to 10 warm weather clothing items + accessories in good condition\, wash them & place them in a bag. (Please avoid using fresh garbage bags.)\nAnytime between Sunday 5/8 & Saturday 5/14\, bring your items to the Future Front TX headquarters\, 916 Springdale Road Trailer #6 within the Canopy Complex. You’ll see a clearly marked bin with instructions on how to confirm your drop off & secure your spot at the swap.\nOn Sunday\, 5/15 arrive at Central District Brewing & check in with the GOOD girls ATX team. Swapping begins shortly after 1PM & closes at 3PM.\nTake what you need\, make new friends & tip your bartenders. <3\n\nFrequently Asked Questions \nWhat types of items are you swapping? \nWe are accepting no more than 10 clean\, gently-used warm weather clothing\, accessories & shoes of all genders & sizes from each person.  We cannot accept winter coats\, heavy sweaters or swimsuits for this swap- please save those for future swaps.\n  \nIf you have more than 10 items you’d like to swap\, contact us & we can help you decide which items to bring & how to re-home the rest.\n  \nHow do I drop off my items? \nAnytime between Sunday 5/8 & Saturday 5/14\, bring your clean items in a bag to the Future Front TX headquarters\, 916 Springdale Road Trailer #6* within the Canopy Complex. You’ll see a clearly marked bin with instructions on how to confirm your drop off & secure your spot at the swap.\n  \nWe require clothes be dropped off before the day of the clothing swap so we can maximize event efficiency & impacts though data collection & quality control. If you require special accommodations for dropping off\, contact us to create a plan.\n  \n*The trailer is catty-corner to Building 4\, which is located within the back parking lot behind Sa-Ten in Building 2.\n  \nHow does a GOOD girls ATX swap work? \nWe set up the space like a pop-up\, organized by item type and operated on a “bring what you can\, take what you need” basis. We encourage everyone to arrive at 1PM to allow time to check in\, hear some important messages & have the best selection of items to swap.\n  \nAfter the swap has ended\, we re-home all of the leftover items & calculate the estimated environmental\, social & economic impact of the event. We publish  this along with insights & observations in each clothing swap’s GOOD Report.\n  \nUltimately\, you can come whenever! All are welcome\, but we ask that only those who have dropped off items prior to the event leave with items.\n  \nWhere is the swap? \nCentral District Brewing located at 417 Red River St. \nIt is very accessible by bike\, train & car. \nDo I have to be 21+ to participate? \nIndividuals under 21 can attend the swap without consuming alcohol. f you plan on drinking\, please be prepared to show your ID.\n  \nWill I be able to try things on? \nThere are restrooms available\, but most people wear clothes that are easy to try things on over or under like leggings + tanks or loose dresses/skirts.\n  \nWhat do you do with the swap leftovers? \nWe’ve built relationships with local charities\, resale shops and upcyclers to make sure everything gets responsibly re-homed. We do end up selling some items & use those funds to support the growth of GOOD girls ATX. We’re currently fundraising to trademark our brand and register as a nonprofit.\n  \nIf you have ideas on rehoming swap leftovers\, please reach out to us.\n  \nStill not sure about something? Contact GOOD girls ATX.

SUMMARY:Lunar Eclipse with Austin Astronomical Society
DESCRIPTION:Join us and the Austin Astronomical Society on May 15th as we observe a total lunar eclipse in Northwest District Park. A total lunar eclipse occurs when Earth’s shadow blocks the sun’s light\, which otherwise would reflect off the moon\, resulting in the moon appearing bright red! All ages are welcome but please be mindful that the equipment is fragile\, so children and pets must be watched closely. Please leave pets at home.\n \nFeel free to bring flashlights\, as it will be dark. Red lights are preferred to protect your eyes’ adaptation to the dark\, but we will also have red cellophane that can be put on white lights.\n \nPlease wear comfortable clothing and shoes that are weather appropriate.\n \nYou can RSVP here. \nAfter you register\, please keep an eye on your inbox for last-minute updates. Successful viewing is dependent on a clear sky\, so we will send out updates by email if the weather does not seem conducive to this activity.

SUMMARY:Anti-Asian Bias\, Racism\, and Its Impact on Our Mental Health
DESCRIPTION:Our next BRAVE Communities Conversation will be held in-person & live-streamed on BRAVE Communities Facebook on Tuesday\, May 31st from 6:00pm – 7:30pm.\n(doors open at 5:30pm)\nSpicewood Springs Library\n8637 Spicewood springs Rd.\n\n \nA survey released in October by the National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI) found that 77 percent of Asian Americans with mood disorders reported struggling to talk about their condition compared to 69 percent of white people.\n\n \nFor many Asian Americans the struggle with mental health has increased along with the 149% increase of hate incidents since the pandemic began. Anti-Asian xenophobia in the U.S dates all the way back to the 19th century. To this very day Asian Americans suffer from harassment rooted in our racist history.\n\n \nJoin us as we discuss anti-Asian biases\, racism\, and it’s impact on mental health\, so we can combat the stigma against seeking out care for your mental health– which prevents many communities of color from getting the help they need and most importantly deserve. SUMMARY:Fix-It Clinic
DESCRIPTION:Bring your favorite things back to life at this Fix-It Clinic hosted by Austin Creative Reuse through the City of Austin’s Fix-It Austin Partner program.\n \nWhat’s a Fix-It Clinic? \nIs there a fallen hem in your favorite shirt? Did your sewing machine stop working? Has the chain on your necklace broken? Bring these items and more to our next Fix-It Clinic to learn how to fix your broken items from skilled volunteer coaches — for free!\n \nWhile we can’t guarantee your item will be fixed\, coaches will guide you through how the item works and what you may need for repair. Attendees are expected to actively participate and stay with their items during the repair process. Dropping items off is not allowed.\n \nWhat should I bring? \nYour broken item(s) and a desire to improve your repair skills! You may bring up to two items. Tools will be available for you to use\, but you can also bring your own tools if you prefer. Please bring any replacement part\, missing button\, fabric patch\, matching thread or other material you might need to help you fix your item. We will also have materials available through our center.\n \nAt this Fix-It Clinic\, we’ll be focusing on: \n\nSewing machines and sergers\nCreative clothing repairs and patching\nJewelry repair\n\nWho can attend?\n \nAll ages are welcome\, but children under the age of 13 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Fix-It Clinics are a great learning opportunity for children ages 7 and up!\n \nHow do I sign up? \nRight here! You may reserve up to two tickets based on your broken item and arrival time. One ticket = one item. If you are registering for other family members\, you may select up to two tickets per participant. Please register tickets under the name of the person who will be working on the item. We will have a list of who has registered at the check-in booth\, so no need for you to print your confirmation.\n \nWhat if the clinic is sold out for the item I want to bring? \nIf your preferred ticket is sold out\, you may still come to the Fix-It Clinic with your item. We will do our best to accommodate you\, but we cannot guarantee the availability of coaches. Check Austin Resource Recovery’s official web page for an announcement of the next one!\n \nCan I volunteer at the clinic? \nWe are always looking for individuals with repair skills to become Fix-It Coaches! To sign up as a repair coach for our Clinic\, visit our volunteer sign-up platform online and claim a spot.\n \nThis is an indoor clinic\, masks are optional\, but encouraged. \nAfter the clinic\, stick around to enjoy a free screening of the new SCRAP documentary in ACR’s side parking lot.\n \nAbout ACR: \nAustin Creative Reuse (ACR) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Our mission is to foster conservation and reuse through creativity\, education and community building. We opened Austin’s first and only creative reuse center in September 2015. In our center\, we collect\, process and re-sell gently used creative materials donated from individuals and businesses. To date\, ACR has diverted more than one million pounds of usable creative materials from the landfill and hosted hundreds of workshops and community events to promote creative reuse.
