SUMMARY:Free Class: Plant Propagation
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, August 18th at 10am – “Plant Propagation” with Stacie Primeaux.   \nIt is simple and easy to propagate plants.  Some of the most common ways plants are propagated or multiplied are by growing seeds\, root division and stem cuttings.  Stacie will discuss which process is most appropriate for specific species. \nDo you have a favorite plant you want to share with friends or one you just can’t find anywhere to get more?  Dividing plants and taking cuttings allows you to greatly increase the number of plants you have so they can be shared\, sold or planted in the landscape.  You never knew it could be so simple!  Stacie has many years of experience working at the Natural Gardener on the grounds and as well as the Info Desk.  Let her get you started on your project!

SUMMARY:Sierra Club Book Club: Unstoppable By Bill Nye
DESCRIPTION:From the Sierra Club –\nWe’ll be discussing the book “Unstoppable: Harnessing Science to Change the World” by Bill Nye. I have heard good things about this book and look forward to reading it. \nAmazon.com describes it as…\n” In UNSTOPPABLE\, Bill Nye crystallizes and expands the message for which he is best known and beloved. That message is that with a combination of optimism and scientific curiosity\, all obstacles become opportunities\, and the possibilities of our world become limitless. With a scientist’s thirst for knowledge and an engineer’s vision of what can be\, Bill Nye sees today’s environmental issues not as insurmountable\, depressing problems but as chances for our society to rise to the challenge and create a cleaner\, healthier\, smarter world. ” \n**The audible version of this book is narrated by Bill Nye\, himself\, and I have heard that he’s does a great job. \nSeptember’s book will be “Desert Solitare” by Edward Abbey. This book is regarded as one of the finest nature narratives in American literature. He was a park ranger and conservationist. It’s a collection of vignettes about life in the wilderness and the nature of the desert itself. \nThe book club will meet at the “Rock Garden” picnic tables. These are located uphill from the Zilker Hillside Theater.

SUMMARY:Life Cycle Assessments: September COTE Meeting
DESCRIPTION:From AIA Austin (American Institute of Architects) Committee on the Enviornment –\nJoin us for our monthly meeting! This month we’re talking about materials and building impact! \nOur special guest\, Dirk Kestner\, Director of Sustainable Design with Walter P. Moore in Austin and member of the LEED Materials and Resources Technical Advisory Group for USGBC\, will be teaching us about Life Cycle Assessments (LCA’s). \nAn LCA is a tool that allows architects and other building professionals to understand the energy use and other environmental impacts associated with all life cycle phases of the building: raw material procurement\, manufacturing\, construction\, operation and decommissioning. These Assessments have recently been accepted into LEED’s credit system and have been an integral part of the Living Building Challenge since its inception. \nAn LCA is the cradle-to-grave quantification of potential environmental impacts of products or services. LCA removes the guesswork; one can assess buildings to understand their environmental “hot spots” and identify greener alternatives. Commonly reported impact metrics include global warming (“carbon footprint”)\, acidification (“acid rain”)\, eutrophication (“algal bloom”)\, photochemical oxidant creation (“summer smog”) and ozone depletion (“the ozone hole”). \nPlease bring an appetite for learning\, discussion\, and yummy treats! Food and beverage is provided thanks to Whole Foods Market.
