SUMMARY:Defending Democracy Dinner
DESCRIPTION:Our democracy is what allows us to have our way of life with the freedoms we enjoy. But democracy is fragile. It can disappear before our very eyes if we aren’t careful. In order to protect our democracy\, everyday citizens must be engaged and step up to defend it.\n\n \n\nThe League of Women Voters Austin Area is made up of volunteers right here in Central Texas who recognize that our democracy must be protected. We provide voter registration in local high schools and throughout the community. We create the Voters Guide\, the go-to publication for nonpartisan information during each election. SUMMARY:Ceremonial Moment of Silence & Splash Honoring Civil Rights Activist Joan Means Khabele
DESCRIPTION:Austin Parks and Recreation invites the public to attend a ceremony at Barton Springs Pool on Saturday\, April 9 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. to honor Joan Means Khabele. Her courageous act of swimming in Barton Springs to protest segregation at the pool sparked the civil rights era swim-ins that eventually led to the desegregation of Barton Springs Pool.\n \nThe event will include a proclamation\, speakers\, and water blessing ceremony performed by Geraldo Perez. The PBS documentary featuring Khabele talking about her swim at Barton Springs will be screened at the pool. Additionally\, there will be listening booths set-up for community members to share oral histories and personal experiences regarding race and Barton Springs. The oral histories will become part of an exhibit\, virtual and physical\, that will be featured on site at the Beverly S. Sheffield Education Center. Over the next few years\, Austin Parks and Recreation will continue to collect diverse stories to tell the full history of Barton Springs. This is just the beginning.\n \nJoan Elizabeth Means Khabele was an activist and scholar from Austin. Born at Holy Cross Hospital in East Austin\, she attended Blackshear Elementary School and Kealing Junior High. She was among the third group of students to integrate Austin High School in the late 1950s. In her senior year\, she was a student leader in activism that led to the integration of Barton Springs and Zilker Park. After not being allowed to swim at her high school senior picnic\, she was the first Black person to jump into Barton Springs Pool in an act of civil disobedience. In doing so\, she sparked a movement of swim-ins that took place on a weekly basis throughout the summer of 1960.\n \nIn this interview with Austin PBS\, Khabele describes the measures she and others took to desegregate the iconic Austin landmark.

SUMMARY:UWSA Unlearning Circle
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we wrap up our three-part series on Transformative Justice. We have explored what transformative justice is\, the movement away from punishment as a solution to harm and a focus on the socialization of shame and blame which are embedded in us as individuals and in the oppressive systems we participate in. We explored our need for comfort and our conflation of comfort and safety through the tool of theater of the oppressed in somatic exercises.\n \n\nIn April’s ULC\, we will be looking at transformative justice through the lens of relational accountability. What does it feel like to be in accountable relationships? What is the intersection between accountability and transformative justice? What could it look like when we are a part of an intact culture outside a racist paradigm\, grounded in ways of sustaining ourselves without the violence of racism\, independent of oppressive systems. What if we choose to act out of a different paradigm and could imagine that we are in a community we can trust where accountability feels like a hug? Join us as we explore these questions and broaden our understanding through dialogue and self reflection.\n \nThe following resources can be helpful in preparing for the discussion. \n\nWhat is Transformative Justice? (11 minute video with adrienne marie brown and others)\nWhat is Accountability? (16:33 minute video with Mia Mingus and others)\n\nPlease join us even if you haven’t had a chance to review these resources. \nAbout our Unlearning Circles – \n\nUWSA’s first Unlearning Circle in the winter of 2017 was created as a place for white people to do the work of reflection and community self-education. As we continue to gather to critically examine our own participation in cultures of dominance\, we build our capacity to show up as individuals and as a city-wide community network for Black\, Indigenous and people of color-led anti-racist efforts in a positive and accountable way. The Unlearning Circles are an opportunity for white identifying people to explore white supremacy culture and our role and responsibilities in undoing racism. We welcome and recognize the gift of the presence of any People of Color who choose to join us.

SUMMARY:Indian Handheld Fans
DESCRIPTION:Indian handheld fans\, known as “Haath pankha”\, have been used since ancient times. From highly embellished kinds with luxurious embroideries and fabrics used for royals to basic ones for the commoners\, they were a part of daily life. Each region of the subcontinent had its own unique style too! Join us in making your very own Haath pankha\, which you can carry on a warm sunny day to a picnic in the park – it’s bound to make you look and feel cool!!\n \nThis workshop is best enjoyed by those 12 years old and up. Anyone under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a ticketed adult. This is an indoor workshop\, masks are optional.\n \nAbout the Instructor: \nPreeti Agrawal is a craft blogger and watercolorist. In her work\, she’s concerned with experiments that combine old and new. She is drawn to the modern craft sensibility but at the same time the traditional arts call to her. She loves the interplay of the two as she adjusts traditional arts to new mediums and materials.\n \nA concern for the environment and a reverence for nature pervades her daily life and work: she saves fabric\, remnants\, beads and the castaways of modern living and incorporates them into her work. Making things by hand gives her joy\, up cycling\, salvaging and repurposing materials gives her joy\, as a result her crafting world is the perfect marriage of two!\n \nFind more of her work on her Facebook or IG @preetishandmades

SUMMARY:Sierra Club Monthly Program: Useful Wild Plants of Texas
DESCRIPTION:Our monthly Austin Sierra Club meeting will be online via Zoom. \nWe’ll start off with Announcements on current events… Tonite’s main program is “Discovering the Lost Planet Underfoot – Useful Wild Plants of Texas”\, with Scooter Cheatham.\n \nTexas is the hub of a botanical domain spanning the southern US and northern Mexico. This region contains a vast reserve of self-regenerating botanical resources that can be used to improve our lives in the future. The Useful Wild Plants Project brings to light every use ever made of Texas’s 5\,000 species of vascular plants along with thousands of new applications. It reaches back to ancient times when prehistoric peoples subsisted predominantly on plants and strides forward to current scientific discoveries in phytochemistry\, medicine\, nutrition\, genetics\, crop and product development\, and more.\n \nWhile proposed expeditions to put a colony on Mars or to find a verdant new planet to colonize are in the popular media\, there is a whole new planet right under our feet — the vast undiscovered wealth of the plant kingdom. Botanical studies are being phased out at an alarming rate\, and our inattention to these disciplines imperils our chances for a safe and productive future. A resurgence in plant exploration is urgent and essential.\n \nScooter Cheatham will speak about this visionary work that draws from the past and present to set up the “next economy on planet Earth” for the future in which all life can thrive. See www.Usefulwildplants.org for more information.\n \nScooter Cheatham\, founder and president of EarthFit and Useful Wild Plants\, Inc.\, is director of the Useful Wild Plants Project and lead-author of the encyclopedic Useful Wild Plants of Texas\, the Southeastern and Southwestern United States\, the Southern Plains\, and Northern Mexico. He is also an architect and design professional working in ecologically aware design\, economic botany\, botanical literacy\, education\, and community action. He holds advanced degrees in architecture\, design\, and community and regional planning and has extensive experience leading interdisciplinary programs. His architectural and landscape projects focus on minimizing human impact and maximizing protection of the native flora\, fauna\, and geology. His projects in experimental archeology and architecture have resulted in full-scale reconstructions of Native American dwellings serving as educational exhibits at prehistoric and historic sites. He has taught design\, graphics\, and watercolor in the Department of Architecture at The University of Texas at Austin and is active in environmental/community issues.\n \nThe URL to click on and join the meeting will be displayed after you RSVP. Using your camera and microphone is optional for the meeting but encouraged.

SUMMARY:Imagine Austin Speaker Series: Results from the 2020 U.S. Census: Takeaways and Trends for Central Texas
DESCRIPTION:The nation’s 2020 U.S. census touched virtually every person and household in the country. It reflects our racial\, ethnic\, and cultural diversity and is a major foundation of our nation’s representative democracy. Census data informs decisions related to redistricting\, the number of seats per state in the U.S. House of Representatives\, and benchmarks in federal civil rights and anti-discrimination laws. Census data is also used to determine distribution of federal financial assistance to local communities\, public and private investments\, and where local governments need on different areas of their city to create more equitable communities.\n \nPlease join Lila Valencia\, the City of Austin’s Demographer\, as she presents demographic trends and social equity issues of the U.S. 2020 Census for Central Texas.\n \nThis event is free and open to the public

SUMMARY:Radical Advocates Academy Applicant Webinar
DESCRIPTION:ANNOUNCING / CELEBRATING: THE AJC RADICAL ADVOCATES ACADEMY!\n\n \n\nAPPLICATIONS ARE NOW OPEN | https://bit.ly/3DM1CG3 |\n\n\n \n\nGet paid & certified to advocate for social justice #THEAJCWAY through our new 12-month training program! The intersecting issues that impact Black\, Indigenous\, and people of color (BIPOC) communities in Austin require constant vigilance and engagement for effective change. At AJC\, we believe that building capacity and anti-racist leadership in combination with skills training and direct experience with groups of dedicated advocates will hasten our impact and materially improve the lives of BIPOC communities in Austin – a central part of our mission. We know that what we do and how we do it is unique. That’s why\, we’ve developed the RAA program\, and we’re eager to get co-conspiring with you!\n\n\n\n \n\nWe’ve learned what works and what doesn’t\, and while we don’t always have the capacity to fight every fight\, we believe that sharing our knowledge and experience with the intention of hastening our impact will increase the power of our community.
