SUMMARY:Fermentation Block Party
DESCRIPTION:From in.gredients –\nMusic and toys and pickles\, oh my! It’s going to be another bumpin’ Block Party at in.gredients. \nThere are few human inventions we love as much as fermentation\, which can add health\, flavor and longevity to our foods AND has given us the gift of booze. And we are blessed to work with an incedible number of local fermenters\, running the gamut from tempeh to saké. Joining us with samples and demos on the third will be Kala’s Kuisine (with their famous kimchi and fancy fermented Meyer lemons!)\, Boulanger Fermentations\,KTonic Kombucha\, Texas Keeper Cider\, Blue Owl Brewing and Brazos Valley Brewing Company – just to name a few! \nWe’ll also be featuring some of our favorite homegrown local musicians to keep things grooving all afternoon\, including Ethan Azarian\, Josh Blaine of Finding Our Voice\, Quinn Taylor Walton and more. \nAnd of course\, we’ll provide fun for the kiddos as well! Toybrary Austin is going to be bringing balloons and an awesome selection of toys from their toy library\, so the little ones will have plenty to enjoy – even if they don’t yet appreciate the joys of sauerkraut and kombucha! \nAs always\, 1% of proceeds from the entire day will go to our Nonprofit Community Partner\, Lone Star Victims Advocacy Project. \nDon’t miss this little free fest with a LOT to love.

DESCRIPTION:From the Sustainable Food Center –\nIf you are a new gardener or new to gardening in Central Texas\, and if you are looking for a holistic introduction to organic food growing\, then this Sustainable Food Center class is just for you. Taught by expert food gardeners\, this 3-part series combines hands-on activities and classroom discussion to provide participants with the knowledge and skills needed to start and maintain an organic and sustainable food garden. Whether you hope to garden in a yard\, on a balcony\, or at a community garden\, this class series will give you a strong foundation for growing your own food. \nClass 1: On day one\, participants learn what it means to garden organically. You also learn about the sunlight and soil needs of vegetable gardens\, and you work together to weed\, amend and plant one of the beds in SFC’s Teaching Garden. \nClass 2: On day two\, participants learn all about watering\, from the basics of watering seeds and transplants to water conservation. Participants also develop their observation skills by taking a guided tour through the Teaching Garden and the adjacent community garden. \nClass 3: Day three is devoted to composting and to organic pest and disease management. We begin with a bug hunt then continue with a discussion of environmentally-friendly ways to control pests and diseases. During the second part of class\, participants enjoy a hands-on lesson in building and tending compost systems. \nParticipants also take home a 45-page manual produced by SFC and designed specifically for Central Texas food growers. SUMMARY:Sierra Club Book Club: Cadillac Desert
DESCRIPTION:From the Sierra Club –\nThis book club meeting is being set two months in advance\, due to the book being larger than most books we’ve done. It’s 495 pages of well researched stories of how rivers were dammed and water was supplied to cities situated in some of the most inhospitable places in America. \nAmazon.com describes the books as… \n“The story of the American West is the story of a relentless quest for a precious resource: water. It is a tale of rivers diverted and dammed\, of political corruption and intrigue\, of billion-dollar battles over water rights\, of ecological and economic disaster. In his landmark book\, Cadillac Desert\, Marc Reisner writes of the earliest settlers\, lured by the promise of paradise\, and of the ruthless tactics employed by Los Angeles politicians and business interests to ensure the city’s growth…..” \nThere was a four part documentary series made based on this book. It can currently be viewed on youtube.com. \nToo heavy for you? The next book after this is by one of my favorite authors\, Michael Pollan\, author of Omnivore’s Dilemma and a few of his fascinating books have been turned into documentaries as well. April’s book will be “Second Nature” by Michael Pollan. The New York Times reviewed it by saying: “[It’s a] delicious a meditation on one man’s relationships with the Earth as any you are likely to come upon” \nThe book club will be meeting at the picnic tables called the “Rock Garden\,” uphill from Zilker Theater at Zilker Park.

SUMMARY:A Water Plan For The Next 100 Years - Public Workshop #5
DESCRIPTION:From Austin Water –\nDawson Elementary – School Cafeteria\n3001 S 1st St.\, Austin\, TX \nParking: Available in front\, sides and the street \nAustin Water will host its next public workshop to discuss Water Forward\, Austin’s Integrated Water Resource Plan. Staff and consultants will be on hand to discuss draft plan recommendations. We would like to gather your input as we move closer to finalizing the plan. For more information visit austintexas.gov/waterforward \nThis will be a kid-friendly event. \nMore about Water Forward \nWhy do we need a plan?\nCurrently all of our drinking water comes from one source – the Highland Lakes\, which are fed by the Colorado River. During our last drought\, the lakes dipped to dangerously low levels and according to studies\, climate change will likely only lead to more prolonged droughts. \nSo far\, our community has already taken conservation very seriously. As Austin Water reports\, water use today is about the same as it was in the late 1990s\, despite the fact that Austin is now home to about 300\,000 more people. With the Water Forward plan\, Austin Water hopes to continue this culture of conservation into the future\, while looking for new and innovative water supply sources and conservation measures. More info>>
