SUMMARY:Free Class: Organic Veggie Gardening 101
DESCRIPTION:From the Natural Gardener –\nTuesday\, May 1st at 10am – Linda Wall presents “Organic Veggie Gardening 101.” \nHave you ever wanted to learn how to grow your own food\, but didn’t know where to start?  Linda will walk us through all the basics from soil prep\, to raised beds\, to planting in the right season. Linda grows much of her own food at her home in Spicewood\, land that has been in her family for 4 generations – over 100 years! \nGrowing up\, her family raised all their own food\, and you can watch her continue that tradition on her blog at  TheRedneckHippie.com. In her role as horticulturist at the Natural Gardener\, along with her consulting business (AustinGardenConsultant.com)\, she has helped many new gardeners get started over the years. She loves when they bring in “baby pictures” of their garden and hopes to see photos of yours soon\, too.  Come join us as Linda shares her extensive experience in a wonderful storytelling style.

SUMMARY:Creating Resilient Cities: Water Utilities on the Front Lines of Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:From Austin Water –\nHow will climate change affect our water resources? The impacts of climate change are here and becoming more and more apparent. One existential climate issue is the impact of climate change on local water resources. Water utilities are already experiencing the effects of a changing climate on their water supplies\, not to mention the stress water supplies are experiencing in rapidly urbanizing areas. \nOn May 2nd at the Palmer Events Center\, Austin Water will host a one-day forum “Creating Resilient Cities\,” that focuses on how water utilities are leading the way in adapting to climate change to enhance resilience for our communities. This forum is cohosted with the Water Utility Climate Alliance (WUCA)\, a leader in this field and currently marking its tenth year\, and the City’s Office of Sustainability. Renowned climate scientist Katharine Hayhoe from Texas Tech University will give the plenary keynote. \nThis forum will feature three sessions exploring issues such as water rights and regional collaboration in the Colorado River basin of the arid Southwest\, creating resilient utilities in the face of extremes\, and the opportunities and challenges of incorporating climate information into a range of water sector functions. Water utility leaders will discuss the particular challenges faced by their utilities and what they are doing to meet these challenges.

SUMMARY:PEAS Community Farm Day
DESCRIPTION:From Partners For Education\, Agriculture\, and Sustainability (PEAS) –\nTwice a month\, we have Community Farm Days to maintain the farm.  Members may harvest at their leisure\, but farm days are also a great time to come and pitch-in on the work and grab produce at the same time. \nTraditionally\, community gardens have been a space where members rent one plot and take care only of their assigned space\, leaving other plots to their respective owners\, who may or may not have the time to keep up with them over an extended period.  In order to more easily sustain the school community farm\, the community works collaboratively to farm the whole piece of land as a group.  Working side by side with neighbors to meet a common goal creates a true community. \nThis event is open to both members and volunteers alike. If you would like to become a member of the farm and enjoy open access and harvesting rights to the farm\, you can apply here. \nAbout PEAS: \nPEAS is 501c3 non-profit that builds community and care for our planet by providing education surrounding agriculture\, nature\, and sustainability through school day programs\, after school programs\, camps\, and PEAS Community Farm & Urban Orchard at Cunningham Elementary. If you would like to become a member of the farm and enjoy open access and harvesting rights to the farm\, you can apply here.

SUMMARY:SFC: Family Friendly Beehive Tour
DESCRIPTION:From the Sustainable Food Center –\nA beekeeping class– just for kids! In this Sustainable Food Center class\, kids (recommended ages 7-16) will learn about the important role honey bees play in our food system and how they go about making what we all love so much – honey! We will learn about the three different castes of honey bees and the important role each plays in the hive. We will discuss the development cycle from the time a queen lays an egg until a new adult bee emerges\, and even get to hold a bit of wax comb produced by honey bees.\n\nBest yet\, after our introduction to the bees\, the beekeepers-in-training will suit up and get to explore a real life hive\, putting their new education to test by looking for the queen bee and spotting the three developmental stages of honey bees. We will remove some honey comb and get to taste honey straight from the hive! Very limited space\, so register early.\n\n*Parent or guardian of youth ages 7-16 may attend for free. Additional adult participants may purchase a ticket for $25.00. Please contact Liz Cardinal at liz@sustainablefoodcenter.org or 512-236-0074 ext. 131 for information on how to purchase additional tickets.\n\n*Registration closes one business day before class.
