SUMMARY:Free Class: The Miracles of Compost
DESCRIPTION:From the Natural Gardener –\nTuesday\, February 27th at 10am  – “The Miracles of Compost” with Neil Schmidt. \nLearn how to get life into your soil with Compost.  Discover tips to make your own and what to look for when buying compost. Neil will introduce you to the life in your soil\, the world of Fungi\, Bacteria\, Archaea and others. These creatures are fascinating and very important.  Compost and the organisms in the soil are the foundation of organic gardening.  The life in the soil is the digestive system of the plant.  Compost helps the soil hold more water and fertilizer and makes those nutrients available to the plant. What are the 3 most important things in organic gardening? COMPOST! COMPOST! COMPOST!

SUMMARY:Solar Austin Happy Hour: Community Solar at PEC
DESCRIPTION:From Solar Austin –\nThe Pedernales Electric Cooperative (PEC) is going big with community solar. By the end of 2018\, the co-op expects to have 15 MW online at five sites throughout its service territory. These local solar installations will be used to provide power to participating co-op members (customers) at a set rate. This is great news for customers who don’t have access to on-site solar—whether it’s because they can’t afford it\, don’t own their own homes\, or don’t have roof or are on land that isn’t suited for solar. And since participating co-op members will reduce their electric bills compared to the regular PEC rates\, it’s no wonder that over 1\,000 members signed up in the first day that the program opened for subscriptions in December. If you’re a PEC member\, you can sign up here <https://www.pec.coop/your-service/solar-options/cooperative-solar-rate/>. \nPEC is investing in low cost solar to reduce more expensive power purchases from the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA)\, which relies heavily on the coal-fired Fayette power plant. Once again\, solar is benefiting the environment and reducing costs. \nSolar Austin is excited to announce that Jim Spaulding\, Director of Project Development Energy Services at PEC\, will discuss the co-op’s new community solar installations at our February happy hour. \nAt PEC\, Jim Spaulding is responsible for developing and implementing new value-driven energy products and services that will advance and improve the cooperative’s performance in meeting its energy demands and developing strategic goals. He is an experienced professional in the utility\, energy solutions\, and water markets\, as well as wastewater facility enhancement\, with a proven track record in team building\, specialized sales recruiting\, and driving growth. \nWe hope you will join us Tuesday\, February 27th for this exciting discussion about PEC’s community solar initiative!

SUMMARY:Fermentation Block Party
DESCRIPTION:From in.gredients –\nMusic and toys and pickles\, oh my! It’s going to be another bumpin’ Block Party at in.gredients. \nThere are few human inventions we love as much as fermentation\, which can add health\, flavor and longevity to our foods AND has given us the gift of booze. And we are blessed to work with an incedible number of local fermenters\, running the gamut from tempeh to saké. Joining us with samples and demos on the third will be Kala’s Kuisine (with their famous kimchi and fancy fermented Meyer lemons!)\, Boulanger Fermentations\,KTonic Kombucha\, Texas Keeper Cider\, Blue Owl Brewing and Brazos Valley Brewing Company – just to name a few! \nWe’ll also be featuring some of our favorite homegrown local musicians to keep things grooving all afternoon\, including Ethan Azarian\, Josh Blaine of Finding Our Voice\, Quinn Taylor Walton and more. \nAnd of course\, we’ll provide fun for the kiddos as well! Toybrary Austin is going to be bringing balloons and an awesome selection of toys from their toy library\, so the little ones will have plenty to enjoy – even if they don’t yet appreciate the joys of sauerkraut and kombucha! \nAs always\, 1% of proceeds from the entire day will go to our Nonprofit Community Partner\, Lone Star Victims Advocacy Project. \nDon’t miss this little free fest with a LOT to love.

SUMMARY:SFC: Introduction to Food Gardening (3-Class Series) Session #1-D
DESCRIPTION:From the Sustainable Food Center –\nIf you are a new gardener or new to gardening in Central Texas\, and if you are looking for a holistic introduction to organic food growing\, then this Sustainable Food Center class is just for you. Taught by expert food gardeners\, this 3-part series combines hands-on activities and classroom discussion to provide participants with the knowledge and skills needed to start and maintain an organic and sustainable food garden. Whether you hope to garden in a yard\, on a balcony\, or at a community garden\, this class series will give you a strong foundation for growing your own food. \nClass 1: On day one\, participants learn what it means to garden organically. You also learn about the sunlight and soil needs of vegetable gardens\, and you work together to weed\, amend and plant one of the beds in SFC’s Teaching Garden. \nClass 2: On day two\, participants learn all about watering\, from the basics of watering seeds and transplants to water conservation. Participants also develop their observation skills by taking a guided tour through the Teaching Garden and the adjacent community garden. \nClass 3: Day three is devoted to composting and to organic pest and disease management. We begin with a bug hunt then continue with a discussion of environmentally-friendly ways to control pests and diseases. During the second part of class\, participants enjoy a hands-on lesson in building and tending compost systems. \nParticipants also take home a 45-page manual produced by SFC and designed specifically for Central Texas food growers. Tickets can be purchased here.
