SUMMARY:APD Camera Use: Share Your Opinions
DESCRIPTION:Austin’s City Council and City Manager want your opinion on the Austin Police Department’s (APD) rules related to how and when officers use their camera equipment. The Office of Police Oversight (OPO) is organizing events and surveys to collect feedback from community members. The Office of Police Oversight is separate from the Austin Police Department and provides impartial oversight of APD’s conduct\, practices\, and rules.\n \nFrom February 1\, 2022 – April 1\, 2022\, OPO will engage with community groups to gather feedback. We will submit the input we collect to the City Manager\, City Council\, and the Austin Police Department in late 2022. This Zoom event series will be an opportunity to share your thoughts on the APD policies related to body-worn cameras and dashboard cameras. Body-worn cameras are small cameras worn by officers to capture what the officers see and hear while dashboard cameras are cameras installed in police vehicles.\n \nIn February\, OPO will host a series of virtual public events\, including an educational presentation on current APD body-worn camera and dashboard camera policies. Meetings will be multilingual – English\, Spanish\, and American Sign Language – with other languages available upon request. To register\, click here.  More information about how to get involved can be found on our website.\n \nEvents will take place at 6:00 p.m.(CST) on the following dates: \n\nFebruary 23\, 2022\nMarch 2\, 2022\nMarch 9\, 2022\nMarch 16\, 2022\n\nAdditionally\, OPO will collect feedback with a multilingual survey here. The deadline to complete the survey is April 1\, 2022.\n \nDo you want to learn more about this project or need help accessing our meetings or survey? Email opo.outreach@austintexas.gov for support.

SUMMARY:DOPE Inaugural Assembly
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, March 5\, AJC invites you to the first DOPE Quarterly Assembly of 2022. During this assembly\, you will have an opportunity to learn more about the DOPE program\, meet our new DOPE leads\, and help us build and shape what the DOPE program will look like in your district. As a collaborative effort\, we will be creating space for every participant to help us identify the needs and challenges within their district\, build relationships with other organizers and volunteers\, and help shape a district organizing vision.\n\n \nWhat is DOPE:\nDOPE – District Organizing: Project Engage is AJC’s new grassroots organizing strategy\, which seeks to build deep community power within every City Council district in Austin.\n\n \nDOPE aims to transform the way we engage and organize with each other and within communities. It’s NOT a campaign. It creates space for the praxis of construction and new ways of being. Through DOPE\, we practice building and transforming with long term vision. It is decolonial. It’s beyond politics. It is inspired by and rooted in Black and Indigenous cultural knowledge and organizing.

SUMMARY:Sierra Club Monthly Program: Capital Area Master Naturalists
DESCRIPTION:Our monthly Austin Sierra Club meeting will be online via Zoom.\n \nWe’ll start off with Announcements on current events… Tonite’s main program is Capital Area Master Naturalists (CAMN)\, with Lisa Audiffred\, David Cook and Andrew Harrod.\n \nCAMN is a chapter of the Texas Master Naturalist (TMN) program\, a collaboration between Texas Parks & Wildlife and Texas A&M AgriLife Extension. The program provides instruction and volunteer opportunities to adults who wish to learn about and demonstrate the principles of sustainable use\, conservation\, and maintenance of our natural resources. Master Naturalists are people dedicated to stewardship of the land and management of the natural resources entrusted to our care.\n \nChapters provide expert-led training for members on their local ecosystems as well as many advanced training opportunities. Members spend time volunteering in their communities by leading nature activities at community events\, giving educational talks\, leading interpretive hikes\, and helping in eco-restoration work on Austin’s parks and preserves. https://camn.org/\n \nLisa Audiffred grew up in South Louisiana spending most of her childhood playing in the woods and creeks around her home. She developed a love for nature and with that a desire to protect the natural spaces around her and educate others in how to do the same. She has degrees in Business and Education and spent 15+ years educating children. Lisa joined the Capital Area Master Naturalists in 2021\, to learn about ecosystems in her adopted Texas home\, and to find ways to contribute to natural resource conservation work. She now spends most of her time volunteering around Travis County and serving as CAMN President. She also enjoys dancing Argentine Tango\, traveling\, and spending time on Austin’s many beautiful trails and waterways.\n \nDavid Cook is a retired Project Manager following 30+ years in information technology. He now enjoys running\, birding\, nature photography\, and exploring what Rachel Carson describes as “the sense of wonder” with the natural world. He is a recently certified Texas Master Naturalist in the Capital Area chapter and serves on the board of the Bull Creek Foundation.\n \nAndrew Harrod grew up going to many of the parks in and around Austin\, and this helped shape him into the naturalist and advocate for the environment that he is today. Andrew has a degree in Wildlife & Fisheries Sciences from Texas A&M. His professional background is in education with a focus in environmental education. He joined the Capital Area Master Naturalists in 2019 to learn new things\, meet other naturalists\, and expand his network. After a couple years of volunteering on the Austin Water Quality Protection Lands\, he now works for them in the Austin Wildlands Division as an Environmental Conservation Information Specialist. In this position he coordinates hikes and some volunteer activities in the Balcones Canyonlands Preserve. When not working you might find Andrew leading hikes for Austin Sierra Club or Save Barton Creek Association.\n \nThe URL to click on and join the meeting will be displayed after you RSVP. Using your camera and microphone is optional for the meeting but encouraged.

SUMMARY:UWSA March 2022 Unlearning Circle
DESCRIPTION:Shifting the systems that address harm requires us to understand that our current legal system is rooted in the multi-generational and ancestral socialization of racism. As white people\, we have been socialized to believe that violent legal\, criminal\, and carceral systems–systems rooted in punishment and blame–are necessary to maintain our safety.\n \nIn a racist world\, those of us who are racialized as white unconsciously associate our discomfort with the false idea that something is both profoundly wrong and dangerous. Out of our racist understanding of comfort\, Black men and boys are tortured and killed as a consequence of white women’s discomfort.\n \nIn ULCs\, we use Resmaa Menakem’s My Grandmother’s Hands as a guide in recognizing that racism is deeply embedded in our bodies. This month we continue that work in a new way\, using a practice called the Theater of the Oppressed\, a practice inspired by Brazilian educator Paulo Friere’s Pedagogy of the Oppressed\, first in Brazil and later in Europe\, which rested upon a detailed Marxist class analysis of the relationship between the colonizer and the colonized. We hope that this practice might help us imagine new ways to respond to the feelings that come up in our body when we encounter situations that make us deeply uncomfortable.\n \nJoin us for our March Unlearning Circle as we continue to learn what it means to apply transformative justice principles in our own lives.\n \nThe following resources can be helpful in preparing for the discussion. Please join us even if you haven’t had a chance to review these resources. \n\nKrista Tippett On Being interview with Resmaa Menakem – https://onbeing.org/programs/resmaa-menakem-notice-the-rage-notice-the-silence/\n\n\nWhat is Transformative Justice? (11 minute video with adrienne marie brown and others)\n\n\n \nAbout our Unlearning Circles –\nUWSA’s first Unlearning Circle in the winter of 2017 was created as a place for white people to do the work of reflection and community self-education. As we continue to gather to critically examine our own participation in cultures of dominance\, we build our capacity to show up as individuals and as a city-wide community network for Black\, Indigenous and people of color-led anti-racist efforts in a positive and accountable way. The Unlearning Circles are an opportunity for white identifying people to explore white supremacy culture and our role and responsibilities in undoing racism. We welcome and recognize the gift of the presence of any People of Color who choose to join us.

SUMMARY:Just Transition from Fayette Power Project - Teach In
DESCRIPTION:Join Sunrise ATX to learn more about the Fayette Power Project (FPP)\, which contributes to more than 80% of Austin Energy emissions\, EPA violations\, and harm to both the community and the surrounding ecosystem. With FPP still in operation the City of Austin will NEVER achieve its climate plan. That said\, it’s about MORE than just putting an end to a coal plant. FPP is the opportunity for the City to make a just transition\, and ultimately a Green New Deal\, a reality by creating good green jobs in the process. This means having an alternative in place to protect the workers\, their families\, and the La Grange community.\n\n \nCome join us to learn more about what a just transition from FPP means\, how it relates to a Green New Deal\, and how you can get involved! SUMMARY:Ecological Restoration Volunteer Event
DESCRIPTION:Trail users will help steward the land surrounding the Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail at Lady Bird Lake. By stewarding the land\, volunteers will help improve and protect the natural areas around Lady Bird Lake\, which is an essential refuge for wildlife within the City\, and connect riparian corridors and numerous protected areas up and downstream. The natural areas serve both resident wildlife and countless migratory birds and butterflies.\n \nThe Trail Foundation’s mission is to protect\, enhance\, and connect the Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail at Lady Bird Lake for the benefit of all.\n \nRSVP here.  \n\n\nWhat will volunteers do? \n\n\n \nVolunteers will help in the Watershed Protection Department Greenhouse by planting\, pruning\, propagating\, and controlling weeds.\n \n\n\n\n\nWhat will volunteers need to bring or wear? \nWear long pants (long sleeves recommended)\, sturdy closed-toed shoes that can get dirty\, face-mask\, and bring a filled water bottle.\n \n\n\nWhat should volunteers know about the location? \n\n\nParking is available along Lambie St and at the Extend-a-Care parking lot

SUMMARY:Lights Out Texas Webinar for Austin Businesses
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that most birds migrate at night? They often use the moon\, stars\, and sun to navigate. Light pollution can interfere with these signals and cause a serious problem for birds: they might be thrown off course or become so disoriented that they circle until they fall to exhaustion or collide with buildings. Fortunately\, you can help these birds safely complete their journey with just a flick of a switch.\n \n\nLearn about the Lights Out Texas initiative and the local efforts in Austin with Travis Audubon\, Austin’s oldest conservation organization. Registrants will receive a link to access the Zoom meeting the morning of March 23. Please register by March 22 at 5 PM CT.

SUMMARY:Making In Systems
DESCRIPTION:How do artists and scientists think about systems\, interconnectedness\, and networks in similar and different ways? How can artists and scientists collaborate to increase the visibility of ecological systems?\n \n\nThe panelists in Making in Systems visualize\, translate\, and study systems and networks through living sculpture\, recycled materials\, coded environments\, and hydrology mapping. They materially and conceptually engage with systems of water\, historical exploitation of people and landscape\, and recycling\, as well as the collapse of systems.\n \n\nVisualizing river networks and systems allows Paola Passalacqua to understand the development and evolution of these landscapes. In Christopher Lin’s Earth to Earth (Dust to Dust)\, earthworms reconstitute decaying organic material such as currency and symbolic flowers into fertile soil. As the currency is consumed\, seeds germinating from this composted material sprout webbed networks of roots hinting at regeneration and regrowth in this visualized future. Everest Pipkin’s Worm Room is a first-person greenhouse exploration game. As you wander through an endless series of glasshouses populated by generative plants sourced from public-domain botanical illustrations\, one is faced with the idea that in the future this web-based plant room might be the only way to interact with various species. In Hannah Chalew’s Embodied Emissions\, paper made of plastic and sugarcane\, with ink made from oak galls and shells\, creates a complex image examining the legacies of exploitation of people and landscape from the time of colonization and plantations into our current petrochemical age.\n \n\nResearch\, art\, knowledge\, understanding\, and change are all nodes in a complex system.\n \n\nIn this age of environmental collapse\, artists and scientists are uniquely capable of harnessing anxiety into data and imagery. Science analyzes systems at their source\, disseminating information that artists can filter and reprocess. Data can be remixed\, visualized\, and translated into sculpture/code/painting to change our awareness of the interconnectedness of systems. Networks theory\, for example\, is an interdisciplinary tool that can be used to consider a wide range of systems: ecological\, biological\, coastal\, social\, and internet. Visualizing patterns helps us understand them.
