SUMMARY:Interactive Climate Negotiation Role Play Game
DESCRIPTION:From the Faith & Energy Action Team –\nDATE: THIS  THURSDAY\,  JANUARY 21  7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPLACE: FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH  703 S Church St.  Georgetown\, TX\nPRESENTER:  Robert Murray\, former manager of Seattle Power environmental activist with Climate Buddies in Austin\, and an engineer by profession.\n \n\nThe Interactive  Climate Negotiation Role play game was used to train negotiators  in the December Paris Climate Conference.  Bob\, who has experienced some of the training himself\, will explain this powerful tool and guide us in experiencing  a shortened version of it through small group interaction.  He states:  ” Participating as a negotiator or a special interest (i.e. role for fossil fuel companies) is amazingly real and can be transformative.”  He notes that this negotiation process focuses on how everyone  in the world (all parties) will be winners in addressing the climate issues and thus it promotes a sense of hope.  Come  join us in a great experience.

SUMMARY:“40 Million IQ Points: The neurological cost of smokestack and tailpipe pollution.”
DESCRIPTION:Open Spaces Committee of the Austin City Council\, first floor room TBA\, will hear these remarks from Dr. Jules R. Elkins PhD –\n \n\n$1\,000\,000\,000\,000. That is the current annual cost of IQ loss due to lead exposure in developing nations. Mercury costs the U.S. $1.3 billion annually in lost productivity from US power plant emissions alone. The cost of lost IQ points due to exposure to industrial chemicals that harm the developing human brain is thought to be in the hundreds of billions of dollars a year.\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTo be clear\, existing science does not establish a clear causal relationship between industrial chemical exposure and neurodevelopmental delay for most potentially neurotoxic chemicals. This standard of scientific proof\, however\, has left an entire generation of American children exposed to elevated lead levels. We’ve known methylmercury is neurotoxic since 1972\, but it is still being emitted widely. And now\, 1 in 6 American children has a neurodevelopmental impairment. But again these are simply statistical associations. We may know that exposure to certain chemicals is associated with increased risk of harm\, but correlation is not proof of harm. However\, the stakes are extraordinary. While we are gathering scientific evidence\, a potential generation of American children may be suffering neurologic harm from industrial chemicals.\n \n\nLet’s turn the lens to where we live. Smart city growth is not a war between regulation and prosperity. Austin is growing rapidly\, and sits at an important crossroads. McKinsey Global Institute has robustly found that leaders who make important strides in improving their cities\, no matter their starting point\, do three things really well – they achieve smart growth\, do more with less\, and win support for change. Smart growth means integrating the environment into economic decision making.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJules Elkins\, PhD\nLecturer\, Department of Geography and the Environment University of Texas at Austin

SUMMARY:Citizens' Climate Lobby Regional Conference
DESCRIPTION:From the Citizens’ Climate Lobby –\nMoving Towards Solutions\nJanuary 30-31\, 2016\nLady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center\, Austin\, TX \nRegistration deadline: January 28\, 2016  \nNo single individual can create the political will for action on climate\, but all of us are affected by climate change. Together\, we have the power to restore the climate by coming together to learn how to move Congress towards solutions. \nCitizens’ Climate Lobby (CCL) promotes a workable plan to tax carbon emissions at the source – or at the border – so that the costs of greenhouse gas emissions are reflected in the marketplace. They then propose to rebate all of the tax to citizens\, making them financially compensated in the process\, but leading to market-wide choices away from carbon intensive fuels and products. With this well thought out solution\, CCL actively lobbies every representative of Congress so that when there is a will\, there will be a politically practical solution. \nPeople who have been to our regional conferences\, have called them “life-changing\, empowering\, and inspiring.” \nOn January 30 and 31\, Citizen’s Climate Lobby will hold its 3rd annual 3rd Coast Regional Conference\, including people from Texas\, Louisiana\, Mississippi and Alabama. The 2016 CCL 3rd Coast Regional Conference\, located in Austin\, TX will focus on communication and concerns specific to our region. We will teach you how to find common ground and build relationships with those who may not be our natural allies. \nOur keynote speaker on the global issues of climate change and national security will be Retired Navy Rear Admiral David Titley.  Also scheduled to appear is Mark Reynolds\, Executive Director of Citizens’ Climate Lobby\, an all-around inspiring leader. The conference will feature speakers\, breakouts and smaller group training sessions. \n

SUMMARY:One-Day-Per-Week Watering Public Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Building on lessons learned during the drought\, Austin Water is proposing to move to a permanent one-day-per-week watering schedule. In a press release\, Austin Water said they realize this would be a significant change for the community\, which is why they are now soliciting public feedback as they move the proposal on to City Council. \nAustin Water also says that watering restrictions are their biggest water saving measure and that one-day-per-week watering restrictions were critical in keeping the Highland Lakes above emergency levels during the worst part of the drought. You can submit your opinions about the proposed change online with this survey. \nThe February Public Workshop Meeting will be a workshop to look at all of the public input and feedback.

SUMMARY:"In Defense of Food" Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:From the Austin Zen Center’s Environmental Studies Group –\nIn Defense of Food\, the PBS documentary based on the book by the same name\, takes viewers on a fascinating journey to answer the question – What should I eat to be healthy? Cutting through confusion and busting myths and misconceptions\, the film shows how common sense and old-fashioned wisdom can help us rediscover the pleasures of eating and avoid the chronic diseases so often associated with the modern diet. \n\n\n\n\nMichael Pollan’s journey of discovery takes him from the plains of Tanzania\, where one of the world’s last remaining tribes of hunter-gatherers still eats the way our ancestors did\, to Loma Linda\, California\, where a group of Seventh-day Adventist vegetarians live longer than almost anyone else on earth\, and eventually to Paris\, where the French diet\, rooted in culture and tradition\, proves surprisingly healthy. \n\n\n\n\nAlong the way he shows how a combination of faulty nutrition science and deceptive marketing practices have encouraged us to replace real food with scientifically engineered “food-like substances.” \n\n\n\n\nAnd he explains why the solution to our dietary woes is in fact remarkably simple: Eat Food\, Not Too Much\, Mostly Plants.
