SUMMARY:Foreverland PBS Premier
DESCRIPTION:Foreverland\, a new documentary exploring one of Austin’s most ambitious grassroots conservation efforts\, premieres April 15 at 9 p.m. on Austin PBS\, with an encore broadcast April 20 at 10 p.m. \nThe 7-mile Barton Creek Greenbelt is beloved by all who visit. Its deep canyon flanked by rugged trails and framed by limestone cliffs provides a respite from the hectic pace of daily life just minutes from downtown. Prior to 1970\, the entire area was privately owned. That it exists today as public open space is the result of determined civic action—largely unknown to those who enjoy it. \nIn 1991\, while the grassroots Save Our Springs movement drew national attention for landmark water-quality protections along Barton Creek\, a smaller coalition pursued a parallel strategy: purchasing private land to secure it permanently for public use. \nSome within the environmental community opposed this approach\, labeling it a“developer buyout.” But supporters believed that preservation of this environmentally sensitive resource—home to rare flora and fauna and critical to the aquifer that feedsBartonSprings—could only be guaranteed through outright acquisition. The group recruited a City Council sponsor\, secured a place on the 1992 bond ballot\, and painstakingly negotiated land deals parcel by parcel\, ultimately assembling nearly 1\,000acres of protected public space. \nFeaturing archival footage\, original interviews\, and meticulous historical research\, Foreverland highlights the leadership and persistence of former City Council MemberBeverly Griffith; parks planner Butch Smith; conservation advocate Ted Siff; and George Cofer\, co-founder of the Hill Country Conservancy. \nProduced by Karen Kocher\, creator of theLiving Springs documentary series\, with marketing and communications professional and filmmaker Monica Flores\, Foreverland is a sequel to the 2020 award-winningOrigins of a Green Identity\, which reached more than 26\,000 households. Free public screenings and educational materials for teachers and community organizations will accompany the broadcast. \nBroadcast:April 15 at 9 p.m.; encore April 20 at 10 p.m. on Austin PBS \nStreaming: April 23 via the Living Springs YouTube Channel

SUMMARY:AARC: Hyphenated Book Club - Darius the Great is Not Okay
DESCRIPTION:Join fellow book lovers in the community to dive into works by Asian American authors. \n\n\n\n\nHyphenated Book Club \nThe Hyphenated Book Club is back for 2026! Join fellow book lovers in the community to dive into works by Asian American authors. From new releases by emerging voices to beloved community favorites\, fiction to non-fiction and everything in-between\, explore the diversity of American literature from an Asian American lens. \nAll meet ups are free and open to the public to attend. Must be 18+. All sessions are hosted in person at the AARC. No need to have finished the book to attend\, though recommended. \nThis Month’s Book \nDarius the Great is Not Okay by Adib Khorram \nDarius Kellner speaks better Klingon than Farsi\, and he knows more about Hobbit social cues than Persian ones. He’s about to take his first-ever trip to Iran\, and it’s pretty overwhelming—especially when he’s also dealing with clinical depression\, a disapproving dad\, and a chronically anemic social life. In Iran\, he gets to know his ailing but still formidable grandfather\, his loving grandmother\, and the rest of his mom’s family for the first time. And he meets Sohrab\, the boy next door who changes everything.

SUMMARY:Odditree Ride: Slow Growth Edition
DESCRIPTION:Slow down\, touch grass\, practice presence. \n\n\n\n\nThis event is FREE! The ticket price is a deposit to hold your spot\, and will be refunded with your attendance on event day. \nGhisallo Cycling Initiative and The Odditree Society join forces for a gentle\, reflective bike ride through three distinct green spaces in central Austin—an invitation to slow down\, tune in\, and experience the city through a different lens. \nThis ride will take us through 3 distinct green spaces in central Austin. At each stop\, we’ll dismount and spend time with trees that have lived vastly different lives within the same urban landscape. Together\, we’ll notice their forms\, textures\, and histories\, considering the quiet ways they shape and witness the city around us. \nAlong the way we’ll pay attention to our bodies\, the landscape\, and the ephemeral flux that surrounds us but often goes un-noticed. This ride is an exploration of perception and context\, of how we come to know a place through our senses and our bodies. \nExpect moments of stillness. We may kick off our shoes\, touch the ground\, or linger longer than usual. There’s no rush—only an openness to what unfolds when we allow ourselves to move slowly and pay attention. \nWe’ll wrap with a charcuterie picnic at the Boggy Creek Pavilion. \nCome as you are. Bring water\, something soft to throw on the ground\, your curiosity\, and a willingness to be here\, now. \nBYO-Bike (and helmet) or reserve a loaner from Ghisallo. \nPlease email Tawny.Villain@ghisallo.org with your bike reservation request or questions. \nHelmets will be required for all riders. Bring yours or borrow one from Ghisallo.

SUMMARY:Overheard On A Train
DESCRIPTION:So let’s say you’re on public transit\, eavesdropping on a group’s conversation. (No shame—we do it\, too.) \nYou ever wonder what it would be like to live that life? To dip into their daily drama? Now’s your chance! \nJoin us for Overheard on a Train\, and see what it’s like to walk a mile in someone else’s shoes. \nExcept\, you’re not walking—because you’re on a train. \nAnd also—it’s longer than a mile. \nAnd also—you wear your own shoes. \nYou can book your ticket here.  \nOverheard on a Train is an interactive experience that takes place on board Austin’s metro-rail. You and three friends will sign up as a group\, and receive a script when you board the train. During the journey\, your foursome will read the script to each other\, out loud. (It’s a “table read\,” and you are the actors!) Your collective story will unfold as you turn each page and deliver each line. Choose which storyline your group likes best\, such as THE BAND\, or THE BACHELORETTE PARTY\, or THE BANK ROBBERS—and we’re now offering THE MIDDLE SCHOOLERS\, for kids and families!

SUMMARY:Eat for Impact Walk & Talk with Austin Bat Refuge
DESCRIPTION:Meet us at 6:30pm at Chicano Park for a relaxed sunset walk + talk with Austin Bat Refuge. We will leave for our walk no later than 6:45pm\, ending at Congress Avenue Bridge. The route is beginner-friendly: mostly flat and paved. We will get a chance to learn ALL ABOUT Austin’s Bats on our walk and at the bridge. Come prepared with a bottle of water. (for walking!) \nAccording to Austin Bat Refuge\, for the last six years the bats flew anywhere from 7:45pm – 8:20pm. We will be staying until they fly\, but folks are welcome to head back at any time. \nThis is a great opportunity to connect with others who care about local conservation and supporting sustainable initiatives. All are welcome\, but for the safety of the bats\, we ask that everyone leave their animal friends at home. \nParking Advice: There is limited street parking near Chicano Park – we like parking at Festival Beach and walking over. There is usually plenty of street parking near Fiesta Gardens. \nThis event is part of Austin’s Eat for Impact initiative\, where we’re bringing the city’s residents together around food and climate action all April-long. This campaign is designed to highlight climate-friendly eating and environmental action with free events and activations designed to educate and inspire. Sign up here to learn more!

SUMMARY:Central City District Plan Open House
DESCRIPTION:The City Council resolution for the Downtown Austin Plan update called for a new 10-year blueprint that provides a renewed vision for Downtown. We’re expanding that vision to include adjacent areas with similar character and context: \n• The South Central Waterfront\n• Downtown\n• The University of Texas/University Neighborhood Overlay areas \nThe Central City District Plan is more than just a plan: It serves as a vital connector for existing plans\, projects\, and initiatives. It bridges comprehensive planning\, Citywide initiatives\, Downtown initiatives\, and the transformative work happening under Project Connect and Equitable Transit-Oriented Development.  \nWe’re inviting community members and stakeholders to help shape the future of three of Austin’s most iconic areas. Together\, we’ll build a shared vision that reflects our values and aspirations. You can RSVP for the virtual open house here.  \nTo ensure a more equitable\, sustainable\, and resilient future in Austin\, we must rethink how we plan for growth in the city’s urban core. Around the world\, downtowns are thriving not just through work and play\, but by embracing livability\, inclusivity\, and access to services.

SUMMARY:Tree of the Year Kickoff Walk
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a fun and educational morning at our Tree of the Year Kickoff Walk! \nWe’ll gather at the former Pease Park Elementary School at 9AM before setting out on a guided walk to visit three past winners of Austin’s Tree of the Year. \nThe Tree of the Year program\, run by TreeFolks\, celebrates the most remarkable trees in our community – whether for their size\, history\, ecological importance\, or the stories they hold. With the 2026 nomination period opening at the end of April\, this walk is a great chance to learn what makes a winning tree and get inspired to nominate one of your own. \nAlong the way\, we’ll share insights about Austin’s urban forest\, what makes these trees special\, and how you can get involved in protecting and celebrating them. Our walk will end at Pease Park. \nAfter the walk\, you’re invited to stick around and enjoy a relaxed Sunday in the park\, grab a bite from the food trucks\, bring a blanket\, and spread out for a casual picnic under the trees. \nParking Info \nFree weekend parking is available at the Austin Community College Rio Grande parking garage\, 816 W. 12th Street. \nStreet parking may also be available nearby. \nPlease wear comfortable shoes for walking and bring water/sunscreen!
