SUMMARY:Bird Walk With Travis Audubon
DESCRIPTION:Join Rachel Zierzow and TTC staff\, Jonatan Salinas\, to find birds and observe their behavior on the new section of the Butler Trail\, the Holly Trailhead\, historically part of the decommissioned Holly Power Plant at Festival Beach. Recently planted native trees\, shrubs\, wildflowers\, and natural spring water dominate the landscape and provide excellent habitats for many different species of birds. As TTC restores this new section of the trail\, we will see a change of birds\, so you’ll want to come on this monthly walk. \nThis bird walk is ideal for beginners\, but all levels are welcome. We have binoculars to lend to anyone that doesn’t have a pair. Our walk will total 1-2 miles in about 3 hours\, making our way through the Holly Trail and adjacent to Lady Bird Lake to listen to and look for resident birds\, migrants\, and flyovers. The terrain is mostly flat (dissolved gravel trail and sidewalks) and there is ADA accessibility at the Holly Trail Overlook.  In winter\, we will stop at the Holly Trail overlook section of the trail a bit to watch the waterfowl. \nRegistration is required and is limited to 10 participants. A reminder email with pertinent details will be sent before the field trip. Register HERE!

SUMMARY:Building Austin's Black Cooperative Movement
DESCRIPTION:Black communities across the U.S. and the world are engaging with the cooperative model as a tool for economic\, social\, and cultural liberation. In this session\, we will build on Austin’s Black co-op history to connect with the active and growing National Black Cooperative Movement. Guest speaker Assata Richards will explore an example from our neighbors in Houston\, where We Are The Ones cooperative is transforming what economic development means for Third Ward\, a historically Black neighborhood threatened by economic and social forces including gentrification. \nParticipants will have the opportunity to engage with each other to lay the groundwork for an ongoing Black-Led Cooperative study group here in Austin. \nGet your free ticket here. \n\nMore about Instructor Assata Richards \nAssata is the founding director of the Sankofa Research Institute (SRI)\, a nonprofit with a mission to “create knowledge to build community” through community-based participatory research. In addition\, as a public sociologist\, Assata serves as the Board President of the newly formed Houston Community Land Trust\, the Third Ward Cooperative Community Builders\, and the Emancipation Economic Development Council. Most recently\, she was elected as the founding board president of the Community Care Cooperative\, Houston’s first home care agency owned by caregivers and community health workers. Lastly\, she is a founding member of We Are The Ones\, a cooperative working to build a “Black Solidarity Economy\,” enabling community members to define what success is for them and hold accountable institutions that claim to act on their behalf and develop economic enterprises that fairly compensate workers and build community wealth.

SUMMARY:Local Imprints: Stories of Place and People - Gallery Opening
DESCRIPTION:Local Imprints: Stories of Place and People is a combined exhibition featuring artists Megan Hildebrandt and Malti B. Lee from the DASA (Downtown Austin Space Activation) 2024 Artist Residency Program on February 28 at 506 Congress. Together\, through this exhibition\, both artists explore the stories of Austin through locations and individuals seen throughout downtown. \nEnjoy refreshments as you browse the art created during their residencies and get a chance to meet the artists themselves. \nYou can RSVP for the Gallery Opening here. And if you would like to attend the artists’ talk on March 5\, please RSVP here. \nAbout the Art:\nThrough her work\, Malti B Lee captures the buildings and views in Austin that remind her of London\, the city she grew up in. These paintings connect her new home with her old one\, capturing how places far apart can feel similar. She hopes these works spark curiosity and wonder about the stories that unfold within these shared spaces. \nThe Ambassadors is a series of portraits by Megan Hildebrandt created to celebrate and honor the essential individuals who keep downtown Austin clean\, safe and welcoming. As she created their portraits\, the Ambassadors told her about the pride in the work that they do and shared stories about their lives. It is her hope that this collection brings further attention and dignity to the folks who do this hard work. \nAbout the Artists:\nMalti B Lee PhD (b. London\, England\, 1990) is a British Indian artist based in Austin and collected internationally. Drawing on her global background\, Malti explores the cities she’s experienced through her acrylic paintings. Malti’s works have been presented in solo shows and numerous group exhibits across San Francisco\, Northern California and Texas. Notable works include commissions for the NHL’s San Jose Sharks and the City of San Ramon\, CA. \nhttp://maltiblee.com/ \nMegan Hildebrandt received her BFA from the Stamps School of Art & Design in 2006\, and her MFA in Studio Art from the University of South Florida in 2012. Hildebrandt has exhibited nationally and internationally\, including: The Painting Center\, New American Paintings\, The Baltimore Museum of Art\, The Museum of Contemporary Craft\, Arlington Arts Center\, Detroit Contemporary\, HEREarts Center\, Latitude 53\, Johns Hopkins Medical Center\, the LIVESTRONG Foundation\, Hyde Park Art Center\, The Torpedo Factory\, and Collar Works. In 2018\, Hildebrandt received an Art Works grant from the National Endowment for the Arts for the Aesthetics of Health Course she developed for Interlochen Arts Academy. In 2022 Hildebrandt co-authored an article about adapting the Aesthetics of Health curriculum effectively for higher education during the pandemic in the American Medical Association Journal of Ethics. An artist\, educator\, and arts-in-health advocate\, Hildebrandt currently lives and works in Austin\, Texas\, where she is Associate Professor of Practice in the Department of Art and Art History at The University of Texas. \nwww.meganlynnhildebrandt.com \nThe DASA Artist Residency Program is presented by the Downtown Austin Alliance Foundation in partnership with Tribeza.

SUMMARY:Ready\, Set\, Plant! At Boggy Creek Greenbelt
DESCRIPTION:Ready\, Set\, Plant! is a volunteer tree-planting program that plants 10\,000 trees each year along Austin’s creeks and rivers. We educate volunteers on proper tree planting techniques and riparian restoration in partnership with the City of Austin’s Watershed Protection Department and Keep Austin Beautiful. Some benefits of creekside planting include cooler water for aquatic life\, erosion control\, and filtering of pollutants from stormwater. Our events are family-friendly and provide an opportunity for community members to connect with Austin’s public lands. \nNo experience or tools are needed. We will train everyone at the beginning of the event\, and provide all tools\, materials\, gloves\, water\, and snacks. \nRSVP to volunteer here.
