SUMMARY:Bird Walk At Lady Bird Lake
DESCRIPTION:Join The Trail Conservancy and Travis Audubon to find birds and observe their behavior on the new section of the Butler Trail\, the Holly Trailhead\, historically part of the decommissioned Holly Power Plant at Festival Beach. Recently planted native trees\, shrubs\, wildflowers\, and natural spring water dominate the landscape and provide excellent habitats for many different species of birds. As TTC restores this new section of the trail\, we will see a change of birds\, so you’ll want to come on this monthly walk.\n \n\nThis bird walk is ideal for beginners\, but all levels are welcome. We have binoculars to lend to anyone that doesn’t have a pair. Our walk will total 1-2 miles in about 3 hours\, making our way through the Holly Trail and adjacent to Lady Bird Lake to listen to and look for resident birds\, migrants\, and flyovers. The terrain is mostly flat (dissolved gravel trail and sidewalks) and there is ADA accessibility at the Holly Trail Overlook.  In winter\, we will take a stop at the Holly Trail overlook section of the trail a bit to watch the waterfowl.\n \n\nRegistration is required and is limited to 10 participants. A reminder email will be sent with pertinent details before the field trip. For questions\, contact Rachel at rachel.zierzow@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:Austin African American Book Festival
DESCRIPTION:Renowned poet and author Nikki Giovanni will headline the 18th Annual Austin African American Book Festival on Saturday\, June 29\, 2024\, at the Carver Museum and Carver Library located at 1161 and 1165 Angelina Street in Austin\, Texas\, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. \nOur theme “Black Feeling\, Black Talk: Activism in Poetry and Prose\,” beautifully encapsulates the essence of Giovanni’s seminal work\, “Black Feeling\, Black Talk.” It’s a powerful acknowledgment of the awareness and consciousness required to confront the ongoing challenges facing Black communities\, particularly in the realm of civil rights \n“We are thrilled to celebrate the festival’s 18th year with our featured guest\, Nikki Giovanni\,” said Roz Oliphant Jones\, festival founder. “She is a literary legend and her life embodies our theme and her story will inspire all generations of festival attendees.” \nBy centering discussions around what Black men and women are feeling\, the festival creates a platform for honest dialogue about the experiences\, struggles\, and triumphs within the community. It’s not just about acknowledging these feelings but also about channeling them into meaningful activism and advocacy. \nCheck out the full lineup of events (for both adults and kids) here.
