SUMMARY:November 2021 UWSA Unlearning Circle
DESCRIPTION:November’s UWSA Unlearning Circle will explore the People’s Institute principle: Analyzing Power\n \nAs a society\, we often believe that individuals and/or their communities are solely responsible for their conditions. Through the analysis of institutional power\, we can identify and unpack the systems external to the community that create the internal realities many people experience daily.\n \nWe have been brainwashed to assign responsibility for what happens to people in our society solely to individual choices. Racism is ascribed to racist feelings and actions on the part of individuals\, instead of the systems and institutions that were set up to create racism\, and to re-create racism over and over again. Please join us in this month’s Unlearning Circle\, where together we will look at how racism was\, and is “done”\, shining light on the power exercised by legal\, economic\, and social institutions to oppress BIPOC communities.

SUMMARY:America Recycles Day: Plastic Film Collection
DESCRIPTION:Did you know stretchy plastics (like single-use bags\, plastic wrap and shrink wrap) don’t belong in your blue recycling bin? These “tanglers” are made of flexible\, stretchy material that gets wrapped up in the gears of the machinery at the recycling facility\, and shuts the system down. If they are stretchy\, clean\, and dry drop them off with a Zero Waste Block Leader to be recycled. Kitchen compost collectors will also be available for pick-up\, while supplies last.\n \nNovember 15 is America Recycles Day. To celebrate and move us closer to our zero waste goals\, our Zero Waste Block Leaders are hosting plastic film collection events\, like this one\, throughout Austin. Check out the map to see all locations.

SUMMARY:People’s Hearing to #FixTheGrid in TX
DESCRIPTION:Register for the hearing and sign the petition at —> sc.org/FixTheGrid\n\n \nStill angry about the winter storm? Should you be angry about the Texas government blocking your input while bailing out the big companies that cause the death of hundreds of Texans? (The answer is definitely yes!)\n\n \nThe February winter storm killed hundreds of Texans. Now\, state regulators at the Public Utility Commission (which oversees ERCOT and the Texas electric grid) are following Abbott and allowing the companies that caused our suffering to determine the solutions for “fixing” the electric grid. We need state leaders to listen to everyday Texans and actually fix the electric grid – not to add more of the same old dirty fossil fuels that already froze.\n\n \nSince the PUC refuses to even try to carry out real public engagement\, we are doing it for them! Please join us for our own community hearing\, led by the people harmed by Winter Storm Uri\, to speak out and record testimony to ensure the PUC hears everything people lived through during the blackouts and what people throughout the state need.\nTogether we can organize to demonstrate massive statewide support for strengthening our energy grid without propping up climate disrupting fossil fuels.\n\n \nWith your help\, we can hold the Public Utility Commission accountable to the people of Texas\, and help build a cleaner\, safer\, more reliable future for us all.\n\n \nSpecifically\, Texas should invest in programs that strengthen our grid and help people stay safer in their homes.\nThese include:\n\n \nEnergy Efficiency Investments:\nPrograms that help people install new AC\, heaters\, and insulation in their homes. These lower electric bills\, keep people safe\, and reduce our energy use.\nInvestments in Renewable Energy like rooftop solar\, and wind + battery storage: Renewable energy can be critical during a freeze. Whether in homes or in a field\, these are low cost\, non polluting options that increase the reliability of the grid.\n\n \nEnergy Management Programs for Homes and Business:\nBy offering customers incentives to reduce energy usage when supplies are tight\, utilities can reduce costs for customers while ensuring that there is still enough energy to go around

SUMMARY:Sierra Club Climate Change Committee Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Zoom! https://zoom.us/j/5133069449\n \n6:30-7:15 Action Teams \n7:15-8:00+ Bruce Melton Presents: Climate Change Across America – After Covid\nMelton presents his first filming trip since covid; to Southwest Colorado during aspen leaf color in October. Highlighted in this photographic presentation are the 4 million acres of 90 percent spruce beetle kill above 11\,000 feet\, regeneration failure of almost all of Mesa Verde National Park’s pinyon-juniper forests after fires 20 years ago destroyed over 80 percent of the forests in the park\, and the money shot; the fir beetle redkill in Ouray. Join Bruce to find out\, “of course it’s climate change\,” and to understand why these collapsing ecologies are irreversible climate tipping in the raw\, that are now emitting more carbon than they absorb\, and will not stabilize unless we lower Earth’s temperature to below the tipping point of “less than 1.0 degrees C above normal.”\n \nAction Teams: Climate Change Committee Meeting – Discuss Action Teams and allow people to sign up to continue the work to stop climate change\, an imperative if we want our current civilization to survive. We’ve formed Action Teams on Austin Energy\, Pipelines and LNG terminals\, Rio Grande Valley Support\, Carbon Fee & Dividend\, People Power\, Data Entry\, and Presentations and more. We have identified additional action teams we’d like to form\, including Transportation\, Climate Justice\, Partner Organizations\, School Education\, and Social Media. Whether you have only minutes a month or hours a day\, join us to build a mass movement to stop climate change. Or join another group fighting this vital cause.

Your hours can count double on December 8th! Join us in making no-sew bed liners that will be donated to area shelters afterwards. SUMMARY:Taking the Next Step in Civic Engagement: How to Volunteer to Serve on Local Boards and Commissions
DESCRIPTION:The City of Austin Housing and Planning Department invites the community to participate in the Imagine Austin Speaker Series webinar\, Taking the Next Step in Civic Engagement: How to Volunteer to Serve on Local Boards and Commissions\, on Wednesday\, December 8\, from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Click here to register.\n \n\nPeople are more passionate than ever to participate in our democratic process\, as demonstrated by community members voting in higher numbers\, marching in protests\, signing petitions\, and contacting their local and state representatives to have their voices heard. Another way Austin residents can be a positive change agent in our democracy is by serving as an appointed member of a City of Austin board or commission.\n \n\nThis webinar features Myrna Rios\, the Deputy City Clerk\, who will discuss how to apply to be appointed to one of the City of Austin’s 70 diverse boards and commissions\, qualifications and responsibilities\, and conflicts of interest that may arise while serving. Three City of Austin active board and commission members will discuss their experiences\, what goes into their decision-making processes\, and their interests in serving the community.\n \n\nThe City of Austin Imagine Austin Speaker Series (which is always free) brings in thought leaders and national experts from around the country to speak about issues pertaining to land use\, transportation\, development\, the economy\, education\, workforce development\, the built and natural environment\, green infrastructure\, social equity\, and sustainability to promote and implement Austin’s vision for the future\, the Imagine Austin Comprehensive Plan.
