SUMMARY:Soaring Past 7 Billion: Population Challenges for a Crowded World
DESCRIPTION:FORUM SPONSORED BY THE WILDFLOWER JUSTICE AND CLIMATE ACTION TEAMS: \n“Soaring Past 7 Billion: Population Challenges for a Crowded World” \nWhen:    Sunday Jan. 10\, 1:00 PM\, after services and fellowship time. \nWhere:    Wildflower U.U.  Church\, 1314 E. Oltorf\, in Wildflower’s Community Room. \nCHILDCARE WILL BE AVAILABLE\, and PIZZA FROM 12:30-1. \nPlease plan to attend this informative talk by John Seager\, Population Connection’s President and CEO\, which has been given to many UUA congregations across the country. \n John Seager’s presentation will address global population growth\, its causes and impacts\, and how we can meet those challenges. We add 200\,000+ people to the world every day\, and 75 million every year. This growth—which is mainly in the poorest places on earth—leads to vast poverty and environmental devastation. Yet there are more than 220 million women worldwide who want to limit their family size but who cannot afford contraception or who have never even heard of it. Population growth is the *only* global challenge for which all of the following are true: 1. We know how to fix it; 2. It’s relatively inexpensive; and 3. Women everywhere want it. \nPopulation Connection (formerly known as Zero Population Growth) is the preeminent progressive grassroots group for population education and advocacy\, with more than 500\,000 members and supporters\, including 50\,000 participating educators. They focus on achieving global population stabilization through universal awareness and access to voluntary family planning together with the full empowerment of women.          www.popconnect.org

SUMMARY:Ready\, Set\, Plant with TreeFolks
DESCRIPTION:From TreeFolks –\nCome plant trees with the Treefolks along Shoal Creek in Allendale this Saturday. \nReady\, Set\, Plant! is a partnership between the City of Austin Forestry Division\, City of Austin Watershed Protection and TreeFolks\, Inc. to plant small saplings. This event will help to restore native tree and shrub diversity and reduce water runoff and improve water quality in Austin’s creeks. \nWe will talk a little about the site’s history\, discuss the role of the urban forest\, learn about riparian ecosystems\, and explain how these plantings will help the waterways of Austin thrive. \nYou should wear long pants and closed toe shoes as we will be working in areas with tall vegetation along the creek. Bring a water bottle and dress appropriately for the weather.  Water\, coffee\, light refreshments\, gloves and tools will be provided. \nRegister here and choose from any of our upcoming tree planting events.

SUMMARY:“40 Million IQ Points: The neurological cost of smokestack and tailpipe pollution.”
DESCRIPTION:Open Spaces Committee of the Austin City Council\, first floor room TBA\, will hear these remarks from Dr. Jules R. Elkins PhD –\n \n\n$1\,000\,000\,000\,000. That is the current annual cost of IQ loss due to lead exposure in developing nations. Mercury costs the U.S. $1.3 billion annually in lost productivity from US power plant emissions alone. The cost of lost IQ points due to exposure to industrial chemicals that harm the developing human brain is thought to be in the hundreds of billions of dollars a year.\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTo be clear\, existing science does not establish a clear causal relationship between industrial chemical exposure and neurodevelopmental delay for most potentially neurotoxic chemicals. This standard of scientific proof\, however\, has left an entire generation of American children exposed to elevated lead levels. We’ve known methylmercury is neurotoxic since 1972\, but it is still being emitted widely. And now\, 1 in 6 American children has a neurodevelopmental impairment. But again these are simply statistical associations. We may know that exposure to certain chemicals is associated with increased risk of harm\, but correlation is not proof of harm. However\, the stakes are extraordinary. While we are gathering scientific evidence\, a potential generation of American children may be suffering neurologic harm from industrial chemicals.\n \n\nLet’s turn the lens to where we live. Smart city growth is not a war between regulation and prosperity. Austin is growing rapidly\, and sits at an important crossroads. McKinsey Global Institute has robustly found that leaders who make important strides in improving their cities\, no matter their starting point\, do three things really well – they achieve smart growth\, do more with less\, and win support for change. Smart growth means integrating the environment into economic decision making.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJules Elkins\, PhD\nLecturer\, Department of Geography and the Environment University of Texas at Austin

SUMMARY:Tree Identification Walk and Mapping Intro
DESCRIPTION:From TreeFolks –\nTreeFolks tree identification workshops\, walks\, and hikes aim to teach you how to identify the trees that you see around you every day. In our tree identification activities\, we’ll discuss trees common to central Texas\, species diversity\, wildlife habitat\, and tree anatomy. No two tree ID workshops are alike and no matter how much you already know about trees\, you’re sure to learn something new each time! \nFor the mapping intro\, we’ll introduce you to our exciting\, new OpenTreeMap community tree mapping project. We’ll talk about the value of mapping trees\, how to map your trees\, and how to share your favorite trees with your friends and community. Then we’ll have some fun trying out the app to map the trees we learned how to ID! \nWe recommend downloading the OpenTreeMap app on your iPhone\, Android\, or tablet and setting up a free user account before the mapping intro. To set up an account and explore the TreeFolks Austin Tree Map on your computer\, go to www.opentreemap.org/treefolksaustin/map. \nIf you would like to attend this event\, visit our website. \nPlan on wearing good shoes for walking. Bring a water bottle and a hat. \nFor more information\, contact audrey@treefolks.org
