DESCRIPTION:Austin City Manager Spencer Cronk has released a $5 billion budget proposal for Austin’s upcoming 2022-23 fiscal year. Before City Council makes any changes to that budget (or votes to approve it in late August)\, they’ll host two public input meetings on July 27th and August 2nd.\n  \nThere are two ways for you to sign up to speak: \n— You can sign up using the online form anytime before noon on August 1st. (Just note – the online form will not be released until a few days before the meeting. If you try signing up and it says the form has been deactivated\, try again in another day or two.)\n \n— You can sign up in-person at the City Hall kiosks anytime between noon on August 1st and 2:15pm on August 2nd.

There will be a plus-sized section and drinks by Blue Norther.\n\n \nAll are welcome to join\, and participants must drop off items the week before the event in order to secure their spot. Scroll for details & instructions!\n  \nWhy swap your clothes with us? \nWe all deserve a wardrobe that suits our lifestyle & personality\, but neither our planet nor its people should suffer for it. The fashion industry is notoriously exploitative of natural resources & human labor. Furthermore\, less than 15% of clothes that are donated ever get re-homed? Most of it gets thrown away due to condition\, quality or oversupply. So how can we evolve our personal styles without feeling guilty about it?\n\n \nBuying & selling at local resale shops or pop-ups is a great option because it gives your less-worn items a better chance at being re-homed & allows you to find new-to-you items while avoiding most of the initial harm caused by garment production. It also supports your local economy! Still\, it can take multiple trips & use up a lot of your time to get items sold or find the perfect addition to your wardrobe.\n\n \nParticipating in a clothing swap enables you to connect deeper with your community\, meet new people & refresh your wardrobe at no cost (financial\, environmental or social)!\n\n \nHow the Clothing Swap works: \n— Gather up to 10 warm weather clothing items + accessories in good condition\, wash them & place them in a bag. Ask your questions using the Zoom chat feature.\n \nLloyd Doggett represents communities from Austin to San Antonio in the U.S. House of Representatives. He serves as Chairman of the Health Subcommittee on the House Ways & Means Committee\, the oldest committee of the United States Congress. Doggett is also a member of the Ways and Means Select Revenue Measures Subcommittee\, the Ways and Means Oversight Subcommittee\, the Joint Committee on Taxation\, and the House Budget Committee.\n \nWhile a student at The University of Texas at Austin\, he was elected student body president and graduated first in his class from the College of Business Administration. He then graduated with Honors from Texas Law\, where he served as Associate Editor of the Texas Law Review. Elected to the Texas Senate soon after\, Congressman Doggett became known for his untiring work ethic. He authored 124 state laws\, including one which created the Texas Commission on Human Rights to prohibit discrimination\, and another called the Texas Sunset Act\, which sought greater efficiency and accountability by requiring periodic review of government agencies.\n \nPrior to coming to Congress\, Congressman Doggett served as Justice to the Texas Supreme Court\, he wrote opinions supporting the right to a trial by jury and authored an important rule bolstering the public’s access to information. He served as Chair of the Supreme Court Task Force on Judicial Ethics and was recognized as an Outstanding Judge in Texas by the Mexican-American Bar of Texas. He was awarded the James Madison Award from the Freedom of Information Foundation of Texas\, and received the First Amendment Award from the National Society of Professional Journalists.\n \nSave the Children recognized his leadership with the Congressional Champion for Real and Lasting Change Award. AARP honored him twice\, once with its Legislative Achievement Award for his leadership on Medicare\, and again with its Legislative Leadership Award for his efforts to preserve seniors’ access to healthcare. He received the “Vision Award” from the Power of Preservation Foundation for his commitment to historic preservation. He was also awarded the “Champion of Music” award by the Texas Chapter of The Recording Academy\, which sponsors the Grammy Awards\, and has been recognized 12 times by Austin Chronicle readers with a “Best of Austin” award\, most recently in 2021. He is a leader in the effort to lower prescription drug prices\, and authored bills that established the Commission to End Child Abuse and Neglect Fatalities and successfully enacted a higher-education tax credit.\n \nSince Lloyd Doggett was elected to the United States House of Representatives\, he has served as a strong defender of Social Security\, Medicare\, health care\, immigration reform\, the environment\, our veterans\, and public education. The Texas Association of Mexican American Chambers of Commerce has named Congressman Doggett the Government Hispanic Business Advocate of the Year. DESCRIPTION:We invite you to join us for our upcoming Unlearning Circle on Sat\, August 13\, 2022\, where we will continue to explore our role in building accountable communities.\n \nIn previous Unlearning Circles we have explored safety and policing\, the policing that is (or is not) happening in our communities\, its historical roots\, and some alternatives to calling the police. As white people\, we are conditioned to believe that the police can both protect us from unsafe situations and from having to see and engage with people’s suffering (e.g. homelessness\, untreated mental illness\, poverty\, etc). We can be so deeply conditioned to avoid others’ suffering that we may not even realize the suffering that exists in our neighborhoods and the communities we are a part of. Addressing the root causes of suffering in our communities would involve building community and working together to address these uncomfortable\, messy realities.\n \nYet we are not taught how to build these relationships in our own communities\, and are even encouraged to prioritize individualism\, which in part is “a belief that you are responsible for and are qualified to solve problems on your own” (https://www.whitesupremacyculture.info/individualism.html). In our August Unlearning Circle we will discuss our comfort levels with the idea of building and strengthening relationships within our various communities\, what barriers exist to creating more belonging in those communities\, and what opportunities lie in working through those barriers.\n \nThis Unlearning Circle is for anyone interested–you do not need to have come to prior Unlearning Circles in order to join us on August 13.\n \nWe encourage you to review these resources in advance: \n\nWhite Supremacy Culture – Individualism\n \n10 Ways to Build Community \nRecommendations for Building a Community-Based Public Safety and Health Ecosystem \n\nAbout our Unlearning Circles – \nUWSA’s first Unlearning Circle in the winter of 2017 was created as a place for white people to do the work of reflection and community self-education.
