SUMMARY:The Reluctant Radical - Documentary
DESCRIPTION:From the Wildflower Church –\nDoors at 6:30pm\, MOVIE at 7pm \nIf a crime is committed in order to prevent a greater crime\, is it forgivable? Is it\, in fact\, necessary? THE RELUCTANT RADICAL follows climate activist Ken Ward as he confronts his fears and puts himself in the direct path of the fossil fuel industry to combat climate change. In this intimate portrait\, Ken breaks the law as a last resort and with great trepidation\, to fulfill what he sees as his personal obligation to future generations. The film follows Ken through a series of civil disobedience direct actions\, culminating with his participation in the coordinated action that shut down all the U.S. tar sands oil pipelines on October 11\, 2016. Facing 20 years in prison for his actions\, the film reveals both the personal costs and also the fulfillment that comes from following one’s moral calling.\n \nTrailer and more at: —https://www.thereluctantradicalmovie.com/\nLength: 77 minutes. Discussion follows\, potentially including Q&A with Ken Ward by videoconference uplink. (Stay tuned for details)\nQuotes: “He was told he was crazy\, but crazy is sitting idly by as disaster for young\npeople is knowingly locked in.” -Dr. James Hansen\, Climate Scientist \n\nLocation : Wildflower Church: A Unitarian Universalist Congretation – Austin\, TX\n1314 E Oltorf St\, Austin\, Texas 78704

SUMMARY:PEAS Community Farm Day
DESCRIPTION:From Partners For Education\, Agriculture\, and Sustainability (PEAS) –\nThis is the last Community Farm Day before summer break. Volunteers are needed to help plant watermelon and black-eyed peas. \nTwice a month\, we have Community Farm Days to maintain the farm.  Members may harvest at their leisure\, but farm days are also a great time to come and pitch-in on the work and grab produce at the same time. \nTraditionally\, community gardens have been a space where members rent one plot and take care only of their assigned space\, leaving other plots to their respective owners\, who may or may not have the time to keep up with them over an extended period.  In order to more easily sustain the school community farm\, the community works collaboratively to farm the whole piece of land as a group.  Working side by side with neighbors to meet a common goal creates a true community. \nThis event is open to both members and volunteers alike. If you would like to become a member of the farm and enjoy open access and harvesting rights to the farm\, you can apply here. \nAbout PEAS: \nPEAS is 501c3 non-profit that builds community and care for our planet by providing education surrounding agriculture\, nature\, and sustainability through school day programs\, after school programs\, camps\, and PEAS Community Farm & Urban Orchard at Cunningham Elementary. If you would like to become a member of the farm and enjoy open access and harvesting rights to the farm\, you can apply here.

SUMMARY:Free Class: Ant\, Bee\, And Wasp Social Structure... And Are Honeybees An Invasive Species?
DESCRIPTION:From the Natural Gardener –\nSaturday\, June 9th at 10am –  Les Crowder presents “Ant\, bee\, and wasp social structure” Are honeybees an invasive species? Do not miss this highly educational class on covering Ant\, Bee and Wasp behavior. There are solitary\, semi-social\, and completely social creatures and humans can learn about the role of competition and cooperation from watching these creatures live. Then we will explore whether honeybees from Europe\, Asia and Africa compete with hummingbirds and native pollinators. \nLes Crowder has been a passionate advocate of learning about and living with nature’s creatures rather than fighting nature. He observed insects as a child and has always been especially interested in social insects that communicate with each other and make decisions as a group. Les has worked in agriculture as a farm worker in conventional industry and as an organic farmer and beekeeper. He got a degree in Biology and Spanish from the University of New Mexico. Chelsea Green published his book\, “Top-Bar Beekeeping” in 2012. He often repeats that “The only way we are going to rise is if we all rise together!”
