SUMMARY:Making Art As A Community
DESCRIPTION:In 2016\, the City of New Orleans received $141 million from the Department of Housing & Urban Development’s National Disaster Resilience Competition Grant for the Gentilly Resilience District – a combination of investments and infrastructure projects in the Gentilly neighborhood designed to reduce flood risk\, slow land subsidence\, improve energy reliability\, and encourage economic development.\n \nAs part of this project\, local nonprofits Arts New Orleans and the Water Leaders Institute partnered to design a cohort-based professional development program to equip local artists and neighborhood residents with knowledge about critical civic issues to prepare them to co-create public art projects. The program was founded on two core beliefs: (1) public art can be a powerful medium to engage neighbors\, build awareness\, and motivate action in response to critical civic issues and (2) Multiple skill sets and ways of knowing are necessary to confront collective challenges: residents’ lived experiences\, artists’ creative practices\, and experts’ technical knowledge are needed and valued.\n \nJoin us for a panel discussion with organizers and participants in the Civic Arts Fellowship: Gentilly Resilience District to learn more about this innovative and integrative approach to building neighborhood resilience.

SUMMARY:Cryptocurrency Mining in Texas
DESCRIPTION:There is approximately 2 gigawatts (GW) of cryptocurrency load capacity within the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT). As of mid-2022\, ERCOT had 33 GW of cryptocurrency mining in its interconnection queue. The potential increase in power demand was so high that ERCOT established a new interim process and a special task force for determining new rules for interconnecting large loads\, such as cryptocurrency mining operations.\n  \nThe question for the debate is the following: Should policymakers encourage cryptocurrency mining in Texas?\n \nThis question will be the subject of an Oxford-style public debate hosted by three groups at the University of Texas at Austin – the Energy Institute\, KBH Energy Center for Business\, Law and Policy\, and Planet Texas 2050.\n \nWe’ll hear from experts both for and against expanding cryptocurrency mining in Texas\, considering factors related to the environment\, economy\, equity\, and accountability. The audience will vote on their position before and after the debate\, and the winner will be the team that changes their numbers the most between votes.\n \nLight bites and refreshments will be served.

SUMMARY:UWSA November Unlearning Circle
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our November 12 Unlearning Circle: Building Skills to Talk About Race! \nSat. 11/12/22 from 10am-noon CST \nPlease join us on zoom November 12th from 10am-12:00 for our Unlearning Circle Building Skills to Talk about Race.\n \nThe Unlearning Circles for October through December will help us build our skills to engage in difficult conversations about race. Engaging in conversations about race can activate our fears around perfectionism and fear of conflict.\n \nWe might believe that somehow we should know how to have these difficult conversations. Without practice and reflection on the situation with others\, however\, our conversations may fall short of our expectations. Fearing we might mess up\, not be perfect\, we may entirely avoid these conversations.\n \nLiberated Structures Troika consulting process is one way to prepare\, in community\, to have these difficult conversations about race. A Troika is a process we can invite others into at any time to support us in thinking through situations we are in and suggesting possible approaches we struggle to see on our own. It is a tool we can use to support ourselves and others to build vital relationships with each other and meet the challenges of anti-racist work.\n \nJames Baldwin said\, Not everything that is faced can be changed\, but nothing can be changed until it is faced. Join us on November 12th with the gathered UWSA community to face the challenge of building the muscle to have difficult conversations about race.\nHope to see you there!

SUMMARY:BookPeople Presents an Evening with Douglas Brinkley

The event will include a moderated discussion\, an audience Q&A\, and a signing line.\n \nEVENT INFO: \n\nThis event is free and open to the public.\n\nStart time:7 P.M.\nRun time: 45-60 minutes\, followed by a signing line.\nLocation: Second floor of BookPeople.\n\n\nThe author will be signing and personalizing copies of their book after the speaking portion of the event\n\nTo get a book signed\, a copy of the event book or an item of equal value must be purchased from BookPeople.\n\n\n\nEVENT GUIDELINES: \n\nSeating will be on a first-come\, first-served basis.\nThere will not be a live stream or recording available.\nBookPeople reserves the right to cancel or postpone this event if necessary.\nIf you have any other questions\, please email us at online@bookpeople.com\n\n  \nABOUT SILENT SPRING REVOLUTION \nWith the detonation of the Trinity in the New Mexico desert in 1945\, the United States took control of Earth’s destiny for the first time. After the Truman administration dropped atomic bombs on Japan to end World War II\, a grim new epoch arrived. During the early Cold War years\, the federal government routinely tested nuclear devices in the Nevada desert and the Marshall Islands. Not only was nuclear fallout a public health menace but radioactive materials contaminated entire ecosystems. During the 1950s\, an unprecedented postwar economic boom took hold\, with America becoming the world’s leading hyperindustrial and military giant. But this historic prosperity came at a heavy cost: oceans began to die\, wilderness vanished\, the insecticide DDT poisoned ecosystems\, wildlife perished\, and chronic smog blighted major cities.\n \nIn Silent Spring Revolution\, Douglas Brinkley pays tribute to those who combated the mauling of the natural world in the Long Sixties: Rachel Carson\, a marine biologist and author; David Brower\, director of the Sierra Club; Barry Commoner\, an environmental justice advocate; Coretta Scott King\, an anti-nuclear activist; Stewart Udall\, the secretary of the interior; William O. Douglas\, a Supreme Court justice; Cesar Chavez\, a labor organizer; and other crusaders are profiled with verve and insight. Carson’s book Silent Spring\, published in 1962\, depicted how detrimental DDT was to living creatures. The exposé launched an ecological revolution that inspired such landmark legislation as the Wilderness Act (1964)\, the Clean Air Acts (1963 and 1970)\, and the Endangered Species Acts (1966\, 1969\, and 1973). In intimate detail\, Brinkley extrapolates on such epic events as the Donora (Pennsylvania) smog incident\, JFK’s Limited Nuclear Test Ban Treaty\, Great Lakes preservation\, the Santa Barbara oil spill\, and the first Earth Day. With the United States grappling with climate change and resource exhaustion\, Douglas Brinkley’s meticulously researched and deftly written Silent Spring Revolution reminds us that a new generation of twenty-first-century environmentalists can save the planet from ruin.

SUMMARY:The Way of Water: Waller Creek
DESCRIPTION:Forklift Danceworks will present The Way of Water: Waller Creek on November 17 at 7pm and November 18 & 19 at 7pm & 9pm at the Waller Creek Tunnel Inlet Facility at Waterloo Greenway. Set to live original music and with dramatic lighting\, the spectacular performance will explore the way water moves through Downtown Austin\, and what it means for our community. Tickets can be reserved online.\n \n“The Way of Water: Waller Creek will gather more than two thousand people to see this urban waterway and the massive Tunnel Inlet Facility like never before\,” said Krissie Marty\, Forklift Associate Artistic and Community Collaborations Director. “Audiences will experience beauty in the movement of work\, and the awe-inspiring human efforts\, engineering\, and innovations that support and confront the power of nature. We are grateful to our partners at Waterloo Greenway for inviting us to present this performance during their annual Creek Show\, which brings art to the water.”\n \nThe performance will feature the movement and stories of approximately twenty five employees of Watershed Protection Department. Workers across the department from the Lake Crew\, who keep Lady Bird Lake clean\, to environmental scientists on the Applied Watershed Research team\, will perform in The Way of Water: Waller Creek\, showing the breadth of their work. The forty-five minute dance will also feature more than fifteen vehicles including a forklift. And a live musical score by Austin composer Graham Reynolds will meld a pastoral string quartet with digital mechanistic sounds.\n  \nThe Way of Water: Waller Creek is the first performance in a multi-year collaboration between Forklift Danceworks and Austin’s Watershed Protection Department\, which works to reduce the impact of flooding\, erosion\, and water pollution in the community. Additionally\, Watershed Protection staff work to protect Austin’s beloved creeks\, lakes\, and springs. This is Forklift’s seventh partnership with a City of Austin department.
