SUMMARY:Sierra Club Climate Change Committee Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Climate Change Committee Meeting – August 2\, 6:30 pm \nJoin us on Zoom! https://zoom.us/j/5133069449 \nNew guidelines are out for reopening the Club to in-person events; stay tuned… In the meantime\, zoom with us! \n6:30-7:15 or 7:30 PRESENTATION – \nPresented by Austin Group Sierra Club and Citizen’s Climate Lobby \nA PETITION TO PRESIDENT BIDEN FROM JAMES E. HANSEN AND DAN GALPERN\n— NEW LEGAL OPINION SAYS YOU CAN IMPLEMENT A CARBON TAX NOW \nDan Galpern\, of the Climate Protection and Restoration Initiative\, will present to the Climate Change Committee an initiative that he and Dr. James E. Hansen began with their letter to President Biden of Jan. 25\, 2021 — just four days after the inauguration.\n \nIn that letter\, which you can read in full at the link below\, they urged the President “to make full use of a powerful tool already at your disposal to accelerate the necessary decarbonization of our power\, industrial\, agricultural\, and transportation systems. That is [to] direct EPA to . . . impose a revenue-neutral carbon fee\,” via invocation of “the Independent Offices Appropriation Act (IOAA)\, 31 U.S.C. §9701.”\n \nThe implications of this are profound. It means that the Biden Administration can avoid the ongoing Congressional gridlock and take meaningful action before the critical 26th Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC meeting (slated for November 1 in Scotland).\n \nDan\, an environmental and climate change attorney who has advised Dr. Hansen on legal and policy matters since 2010\, is Founder\, General Counsel\, and Executive Director of Climate Protection and Restoration Initiative\, https://CPRclimate.org. James Hansen is the Director of Climate Science\, Awareness and Solutions. https://csas.earth.columbia.edu/ Previously he served\, for over 30 years\, as Director of the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies.\n \nWith Dr. Hansen as lead signatory\, CPR Initiative is now petitioning the President to take this action without delay. Galpern will be with the Committee\, via zoom\, to discuss the initiative’s significance on Aug. 2\, 2021.\n \nFrom the petition campaign website CPRClimate.org:\nClimate Protection & Restoration Initiative\, Because Net Zero Will Not Suffice\nMission: To protect and restore a viable climate system by promoting a phase-out of CO2 emissions from all sources and a drawdown of excess atmospheric CO2.\nSign the Petition Now\, You Can Make A Difference!\n \nPLEASE SIGN THE PETITION — Petition at CPRClimate.org https://cprclimate.org/ \nFULL LETTER HERE — https://cprclimate.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/210425-2021.01.25_-Hansen_Galpern_President_Biden_w_Attachment.pdf\n \n7:15-8:00 CLIMATE CHANGE COMMITTEE MEETING – Discuss Action Teams and allow people to sign up to continue the work to stop climate change\, an imperative if we want our current civilization to survive. We’ve formed Action Teams on Austin Energy\, the Permian Pipeline\, Rio Grande Valley Support\, Carbon Fee & Dividend\, People Power\, Data Entry\, and Presentations and more. We have identified additional action teams we’d like to form\, including Transportation\, Climate Justice\, Partner Organizations\, School Education\, and Social Media. Whether you have only minutes a month or hours a day\, join us to build a mass movement to stop climate change. Or join another group fighting this vital cause.

SUMMARY:August Unlearning Circle: Gatekeepers
DESCRIPTION:Please mark your calendar for Undoing White Supremacy Austin’s August’s Unlearning Circle on Saturday August 14\, 2021 from 10 am to noon. Register for this event HERE.\n \nGatekeeping is the topic for this month. The People’s Institute for Survival and Beyond defines the anti-racist principle of gatekeeping as follows:\n \nPersons who work in institutions function as gatekeepers. Gatekeepers are expected to ensure that the institution perpetuates itself. The gatekeeper becomes an agent of institutional transformation by operating with anti-racist values and networking with those who share those values and maintain accountability in the community. Gatekeepers regulate the progress and speed of social change.\n \nWhat do you see in your mind’s eye when you imagine a gate? What are the gates that you keep?\n \nIn some way\, we are all gatekeepers. We control information flow. We interpret\, define\, measure\, evaluate\, translate\, and speak for people-with or without their permission. We titrate the progress of social change.\n \nWe manage the gate\, but we don’t own the gate.\n \nWe all have power. When we don’t understand\, or fail to acknowledge our power\, we are dangerous particularly to those who are most directly impacted by not having access to that power\, those who are Black\, indigenous and people of color and who have other marginalized identities.\n \nIn this Unlearning Circle\, we will explore together our roles as gatekeepers. We will help each other discover how\, in our gatekeeping roles\, we can be accountable for the power we have to support racial justice.\n \nPlease join us for this juicy conversation.

SUMMARY:Champagne Cork Dolls
DESCRIPTION:Make adorable little dolls from upcycled champagne corks!\n\n \nAbout this event\nJoin ACR for a morning of reuse imagination! Champagne corks make the perfect doll base – from warrior to bride\, a chef to a sheep you can literally make anything out of these! Fun to make\, these can be given as gifts or used to brighten your own house!\n\n \nKids must be accompanied by a ticketed adult.\n\n \nArtist Bio:\nPreeti Agrawal is a craft blogger and watercolorist. In her work\, she is concerned with experiments that combine old and new. She is drawn to the modern craft sensibility but at the same time the traditional arts call to her. She loves the interplay of the two as she adjusts traditional arts to new mediums and materials.\n\n \nA concern for the environment and a reverence for nature pervades her daily life and her work: she saves fabric\, remnants\, beads and the castaways of modern living and incorporates them in her work. Making things by hand gives her joy\, upcycling\, salvaging and repurposing materials gives her joy\, and as a result her crafting world is the perfect marriage of two!

SUMMARY:Radical Readers Book Club: Things Fall Apart
DESCRIPTION:Things Fall Apart is the debut novel by Nigerian author Chinua Achebe\, first published in 1958. It depicts pre-colonial life in the southeastern part of Nigeria and the arrival of Europeans during the late 19th century. It is seen as the archetypal modern African novel in English\, and one of the first to receive global critical acclaim. It is a staple book in schools throughout Africa and is widely read and studied in English-speaking countries around the world. The novel was first published in the UK in 1962 by William Heinemann Ltd\, and became the first work published in Heinemann’s African Writers Series.\n \nThe novel follows the life of Okonkwo\, an Igbo (“Ibo” in the novel) man and local wrestling champion in the fictional Nigerian clan of Umuofia. The work is split into three parts\, with the first describing his family\, personal history\, and the customs and society of the Igbo\, and the second and third sections introducing the influence of European colonialism and Christian missionaries on Okonkwo\, his family\, and the wider Igbo community.
