SUMMARY:Naturalists at the Ney: Weaving History in the Blackland Prairie
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a community embroidery and stitching event as part of “Weaving History in the Blackland Prairie” \nTogether\, we’ll stitch while learning about the history of the Blackland Prairie\, the land where we practice regenerative agriculture\, steward ongoing conservation efforts\, and the importance of native plants sustaining healthy ecosystems. Through conservation and handwork\, we’ll reflect on how stories\, landscapes\, and traditional textile practices can be woven together to preserve both cultural and ecological heritage. \n“Weaving History in the Blackland Prairie” is rooted in a layered living history that connects land\, labor\, and legacy across generations. The land where the Refugee Collective Farm operates in eastern Travis County is part of the historic Freedom Colony of Littig\, one of the oldest in Texas.  Jackson Morrow\, a formerly enslaved man\, originally owned the land following Emancipation\, cultivating 2\,000 acres that were passed down through generations of his family. Today the Littig Preservation Alliance\, founded by siblings Alaona Gonzales\, Gena Gonzales\, and Christopher Scott\, works to restore the once-thriving community. \nConservationist Jon Beall purchased 300 acres in 1977 and currently preserves it in perpetuity through a conservation easement.  His conservation work through the Wilbarger Creek Conservation Alliance preserves the rural\, historical and ecological significance of this blackland prairie area in partnership with Littig members and neighboring farms and ranches. \nThis project is supported in part by an Austin Live Music Fund Grant of Austin Arts\, Culture\, Music and Entertainment.

DESCRIPTION:Join us to restore forest habitat on the Vireo Preserve\, part of the Balcones Canyonlands Preserve (BCP)\, which is home to rare and endangered plants and animals. Tasks vary and\, depending on the workday and season\, may include watering\, planting\, seeding\, removing invasives\, mulching\, and building soil. \nYou can sign up to volunteer here. \nThis workday will involve walking over uneven surfaces\, using digging tools\, and carrying watering cans or other materials. Wear closed-toe shoes and bring drinking water and work gloves\, if you have a pair (we’ll have extras). \nDue to the tasks\, nature of the terrain\, and lack of amenities\, these workdays are generally best suited to older youth and adults. DESCRIPTION:The TownLake YMCA will transform into an international bazaar on Sunday\, September 13\, 2026\, from 1pm to 4pm as the Y partners with Global Impact Initiative (GII) to host a Welcoming Week Refugee Arts & Food Bazaar. \nThe free community event features the work of refugees from Ukraine\, Afghanistan\, Cuba and others who have recently settled in Austin. The artisans will be showcasing hand-made goods including jewelry\, handbags\, dresses\, leather goods\, candles\, decorative cushions\, paintings and fresh-baked pastries\, treats and traditional foods (Come hungry!). One hundred percent of proceeds go directly to the vendors.  \nSince the start of the conflict in Ukraine as well as the United States’ withdrawal from Afghanistan\, more than 3000 refugees have settled in Central Texas. Through organizations like GII\, many have found employment in a variety of sectors such as food processing facilities\, commercial driving and hospitality. Refugees are also participating in intensive English-as-a-second language (ESL) classes at the HOFT Institute.

This program is not open to the general public. \nAbout the speaker \nWilliam McRaven\, former University of Texas System chancellor and retired U.S. Navy four-star admiral\, joined the LBJ School for Public Affairs as a professor in national security in 2018. As chancellor\, he oversaw 14 institutions that educate 221\,000 students and employ 20\,000 faculty and more than 80\,000 health care professionals\, researchers and staff. As the commander of U.S. Special Operations Command\, Admiral McRaven led a force of 69\,000 men and women and was responsible for conducting counter-terrorism operations worldwide. He is a recognized national authority on U.S. foreign policy and has advised presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama and other U.S. leaders on defense issues. \nAdmiral McRaven oversaw the 2011 Navy SEAL raid in Pakistan that killed al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden. His book Spec Ops: Case Studies in Special Operations Warfare: Theory and Practice\, is considered a fundamental text on special operations strategy. He has received the Republic of France’s Legion d’Honneur\, the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association’s National Award and the National Intelligence Award. In 2016\, he was named the recipient of the Ambassador Richard M. Whether it’s witnessing xenophobic comments\, workplace discrimination\, ICE encounters\, or public harassment\, this training provides practical\, real-world strategies to support immigrants facing harm. \nThis training is encouraged for allies\, but everyone is welcome. If you are undocumented or at risk of being targeted by ICE\, we recommend also attending a Know Your Rights training and engaging in safety planning. \nTogether\, we can create a culture of safety\, solidarity\, and dignity for immigrant communities. DESCRIPTION:Attend the Fix-It Clinic where skilled volunteers will teach you how to repair your broken household items. \n\n\n\n\nGot a broken item like a torn shirt\, faulty blender or worn-out toy? Bring them to a Fix-It Clinic and learn hands-on repair skills with help from our expert volunteers—free of charge! RSVP for a time slot here. \nNew policy: We will no longer work on computers\, cell phones\, or tablets at the Fix-It Clinic. These projects often require extensive troubleshooting and take up a lot of our volunteers’ time. Instead\, we encourage you to subscribe to the Fix-It Austin newsletter to receive announcements of upcoming workshops focused on electronics repair\, consult the Austin Reuse Directory to find a professional repair shop\, and/or look for a repair guide on the IFixIt website. \nHow it works: Bring up to two items (excluding computers\, cellphones\, and tablets) and work with our coaches to learn how to fix them. Tools will be provided\, but feel free to bring your own. If you know your item needs a replacement part\, please bring it with you. While we can’t guarantee every item will be repaired\, you’ll learn how it works and what you may need to fix it. Note that our electronics/miscellaneous category is the most popular and sometimes there is a wait to work with a volunteer. \nDrop-off option: Can’t attend in person? Drop off your item at the Turner Roberts Recreation Center (7201 Colonly Loop Dr.)\, September 11-17. We’ll try to fix it\, and you can pick it up September 20-25. Items not claimed by September 25 will be donated. Space is limited\, and a waiver is required.
