Sullivan is a Research Associate at The University of Texas at Austin Center for Energy and Environmental Resources\, where he has been a staff member since September 2005. Active in local community affairs\, Dave has served on a handful of non-profit steering committees and on City of Austin citizen boards including the Planning Commission (16 years) and Zero Waste Advisory Commission. He currently serves on the City’s Environmental Commission.  \nDave is a long-time Sierra Club member. He travels primarily by bicycle\, bus and walking. On Saturday\, February 15th\, join our team in wearing your favorite (litter collecting-friendly) Valentine’s attire. Since 2009\, Keep Austin Beautiful has organized large-scale cleanups of Lady Bird Lake every other month. We train volunteer leaders to conduct cleanups at multiple locations along the shoreline and on the water. We are looking forward to everyone joining us for cooler weather and participating in our Clean Lady Bird Lake program. \nSign up for a volunteer time slot and location here. \n“Know Before You Go” \nBefore you head out\, please keep the following in mind: \n\nBe aware that toxic algae blooms can occur in Lady Bird Lake. Whenever you’re around natural bodies of water\, remain vigilant.\nRecognize that zebra mussels are invasive and widespread in Texas waterways. Let us know if you see any zebra mussels during your volunteer activity.\nBe able to identify poison ivy\, oak\, and sumac; identifying these plants is essential for a safe cleanup.\nHydrate and take precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses. We educate volunteers on proper tree planting techniques and riparian restoration in partnership with the City of Austin’s Watershed Protection Department and Keep Austin Beautiful. Some benefits of creekside planting include cooler water for aquatic life\, erosion control\, and filtering of pollutants from stormwater. Our events are family-friendly and provide an opportunity for community members to connect with Austin’s public lands. \nNo experience or tools are needed. SUMMARY:Bird Walk With Travis Audubon
DESCRIPTION:Join Rachel Zierzow and TTC staff\, Jonatan Salinas\, to find birds and observe their behavior on the new section of the Butler Trail\, the Holly Trailhead\, historically part of the decommissioned Holly Power Plant at Festival Beach. Recently planted native trees\, shrubs\, wildflowers\, and natural spring water dominate the landscape and provide excellent habitats for many different species of birds. As TTC restores this new section of the trail\, we will see a change of birds\, so you’ll want to come on this monthly walk. \nThis bird walk is ideal for beginners\, but all levels are welcome. We have binoculars to lend to anyone that doesn’t have a pair. Our walk will total 1-2 miles in about 3 hours\, making our way through the Holly Trail and adjacent to Lady Bird Lake to listen to and look for resident birds\, migrants\, and flyovers. The terrain is mostly flat (dissolved gravel trail and sidewalks) and there is ADA accessibility at the Holly Trail Overlook.  In winter\, we will stop at the Holly Trail overlook section of the trail a bit to watch the waterfowl. \nRegistration is required and is limited to 10 participants.
