SUMMARY:Nature In The City: American Ecology
DESCRIPTION:From Austin Nature In the City –\nAmerican Ecology: Stability\, Integrity\, and Leopold’s Legacy \nJoin us for an untangling of the history of American ecology and an assessment of how the idea of the balance of nature has shaped our American ideas of nature. \nHow does Nature work? How do the biotic and abiotic parts of Earth interact and develop as a system that supports life over time? The word “ecology” was coined in 1866 by the German scientist Ernst Haeckel to name the science that was to answer those questions. At the core of this new science was the puzzle of how do “ecosystems” persist amidst change over time – and was change or permanence\, dynamics or stability\, more fundamental? Join us for an untangling of the history of American ecology and an assessment of how the idea of the balance of nature has shaped our American ideas of nature. \nCan’t make it on this lecture date? There are three others at varying dates/locations around town. You can check out the complete schedule here. Or you can listen to podcast recordings of the lecture (produced in partnership between the City of Austin and the Austin EcoNetwork) here.  \nThe lecture will be given by Kevin Anderson\, a geographer and philosopher researching the nature of\, and the nature in\, urban wastelands. He studied at Allegheny College in Pennsylvania [BA]\, Durham University\, England\, Ohio University [MA] where he taught philosophy and symbolic logic. He received his Ph.D. in Geography from the University of Texas at Austin with a dissertation entitled: Marginal Nature: Urban Wastelands and the Geography of Nature. \nPlease note – this lecture will be held inside One Texas Center in Room 325. Feel free to bring a packed lunch.

SUMMARY:Fix-It Clinic
DESCRIPTION:From Austin Resource Recovery –\nIs there a fallen hem in your favorite shirt? Did your blender suddenly stop working? Is your child’s toy a little worse for the wear? Bring these items and more to the Fix-It Clinic where volunteer coaches with repair know-how will be available to teach you how to fix your item. \nFix-It Clinics are all about do-it-together hands-on disassembly\, troubleshooting and repair knowledge. Fix-It Clinic attendees are expected to be active participants in trying to fix their items with guidance from our coaches. Attendees should plan to stay with their items. Dropping off of items for repair will not be permitted. \nAt this Fix-It Clinic\, you can learn how to fix almost anything! Including: \n\nClothing\nJewelry\nAccessories\nToys\nSmall Appliances\nElectronics\n\nAll ages are welcome\, but children under the age of 13 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. \nChoose your ticket based on the item(s) you plan to bring and when you’ll arrive. If the ticket you are looking for is sold out\, though we can’t guarantee availability of our coaches\, you are welcome to come to the clinic with your item and we will do our best to accommodate you. \nIn order to ensure an effective\, fair\, and fun event\, attendees have a limit of two items for repair per visit. If time permits and if there are Fixit Coaches available to assist in the repair\, attendees can then work to repair additional items. The two item limit ensures that Fixit Clinics remain community events focused on sharing repair knowledge with the greatest number of people. \nInterested in hosting a Fix-It Clinic? We’ll also have copies of our How to Host a Fix-It Clinic guide available along with staff to answer questions about partnering with us to promote an event. \nWhat to bring: Your broken stuff and a desire to learn how to fix it! Sewing machines and other tools will be available for you to use\, but you can also bring your own machines and tools if you prefer. If you have a replacement part\, missing button\, a fabric patch\, matching thread\, etc. that you suspect might help you fix your item\, please bring it with you. \nInterested in being a volunteer coach? SUMMARY:Sierra Club Book Club: The World Is Blue
DESCRIPTION:From the Sierra Club –\nEach book club meeting has been well attended and there are always engaging\, thought-provoking conversations at them. If the ocean’s health is something you’re interested in\, you should check out this book. \nWe’ll be discussing the book “The World is Blue: How Our Fate and the Ocean’s are One” by Sylvia Earle. \nA reviewer on Amazon.com summed it up well:\n“Sylvia Earle is the Jacques Cousteau of this generation\, and more. Not only is she a wonderful spokeswoman for the sea\, it has been her career to study and protect it for many years. The World is Blue is a plea for help for the ocean from one of its biggest and most knowledgeable supporters. She’ll tell you why the oceans are in danger\, and the few small things you need to do to help protect them. All of this is presented in interesting\, lively language that’s easy to read; never does it get dry or preachy. It feels like she’s writing a biography about an old friend. I would recommend this book for everyone\, but I think the most important and the most interested would be those who love the ocean and work with the ocean.” Another reviewer liked the hopeful tone the author used when speaking on these topics\, that they had not seen in other books. \nPeople present at the book club meetings contribute to suggestions as to what books we read. The book for August is “Unstoppable: Harnessing Science to Change the World” by Bill Nye. This is a very uplifting/hopeful book when it comes to books on climate change and I look forward to reading it. \nThe book club will meet at the “Rock Garden” picnic tables. These are located uphill from the Zilker Hillside Theater.

SUMMARY:Solar Austin Happy Hour: Solar Financing
DESCRIPTION:From Solar Austin –\nWe are excited to announce our July Happy Hour speaker: Paul Watson\, Director of Dividend Finance. Mr. Watson will guide us through the ins and outs of solar financing and answer your questions. \nAlthough solar panel costs have come down dramatically\, the upfront costs of the technology sometimes necessitate financing for homeowners and businesses. Mr. Watson will walk us through the market outlook for solar loans and lending. \nIt is important to understand the context of financing from the role the Fed\, capital markets\, solar loans\, and green bonds play\, to where financial technology (fintech) platforms come in for solar growth. The differences between various lenders and the practices they use can meet some person’s or company’s needs but not others’. Lastly\, Mr. Watson will tie all of this together and explain the implications for solar financing in Central Texas. \nMr. Watson was born with a passion for the environment and nature\, and since he was a kid\, he wanted to be a Game Warden. However\, life happened and he has spent most of the past 15 years in corporate finance\, business development and private equity with a primary focus on technology commercialization and growth management. In addition to his role at Dividend Finance\, he spent seven years working in M&A\, due diligence\, market research and operational strategy in countries including China\, India and Mexico. Mr. Watson is also a Partner at Climate Impact Capital\, a Director of Hermes Investment Group\, a Kiva Zip trustee\, and a SURE Program advisory board member. He holds a BBA in Finance\, minor in Spanish\, speaks Mandarin Chinese\, and is a native Texan. \nWe hope you will join us for this interesting opportunity to gain more insight into how to actually pay for solar panels to power your home or business! \n\n\nState Parking Garages can be found next to\, behind and across from Scholz Garten. San Jacinto Blvd.\, 15th\, 16th\, 17th\, 18th\, and Trinity have parking garage entrances. \n\n\nAlthough our happy hours are free and open to all\, we hope you’ll consider donating to Solar Austin. Help us keep solar energy growing in the Austin area. You can purchase a ticket to the happy hour or go to our website\, solaraustin.org\, to donate and avoid fees. For regular updates on our Happy Hours and more information about Solar Austin\, follow us on Twitter and like us on Facebook\, and sign up for our email list via solaraustin.org.
