SUMMARY:Austin Environmental Justice Flood Cleanup
DESCRIPTION:Travis County is sending out dump trucks to pick up debris that is on the curb in Thoroughbred Farms. This means that we need YOUR help to kick that debris to the curb. We will hand out FEMA info\, an invite to a Christmas Party\, and clean up trash and debris in the neighborhood. Please join and invite friends. \nWear closed toe shoes and long sleeves. We are in need of the following items for the cleanup\, so please comment if you have access to these resources FOR FREE\, or if you have some to cover yourself. If not\, we have about 4 pairs of gloves and trash bags available for use: \n– trash bags\n– gloves\n– cups for water\n– coffee\n– containers to hold large batch of coffee\n– snacks\n– clipboard\n– pens \nBackground info – On October 30th\, 2015\, the community of Thoroughbred Farms (off FM 973 south of Bergstrom Airport) was hit with a literal wall of water. Almost month later\, the entire neighborhood is littered with debris and families are without basic needs\, surrounded by deplorable conditions. We’ve witnessed an outpouring of individual volunteer support\, some corporate aid\, and a tremendous failure by the government to help this community in need. \nOur objective is to mobilize support resources from the greater Austin community as we organize alongside the families directly impacted by the flood. The people of Thoroughbred Farms need your help. \nDonation resources/needs will be assessed via the survey form. But you can imagine what is needed: winter clothes of all sizes for children and adults\, shoes\, socks\, tooth brushes\, tooth paste\, shampoo\, soap\, tampons\, underwear (new)\, gift cards to places like Target/Goodwill/Walmart/HEB\, bug spray\, flea repellent\, thanksgiving food\, toys for the holidays\, etc. \nSurvivors\, please do not hesitate to tell us what you need. We will do our best to connect you to that need. \nVolunteers\, we need Spanish speakers to phone bank & converse with survivors on their options as well as go door to door\, we need help moving debris\, collecting trash in the area\, and delivering donations \nWe will be coordinating our efforts with area other non-profits.

SUMMARY:Soaring Past 7 Billion: Population Challenges for a Crowded World
DESCRIPTION:FORUM SPONSORED BY THE WILDFLOWER JUSTICE AND CLIMATE ACTION TEAMS: \n“Soaring Past 7 Billion: Population Challenges for a Crowded World” \nWhen:    Sunday Jan. 10\, 1:00 PM\, after services and fellowship time. \nWhere:    Wildflower U.U.  Church\, 1314 E. Oltorf\, in Wildflower’s Community Room. \nCHILDCARE WILL BE AVAILABLE\, and PIZZA FROM 12:30-1. \nPlease plan to attend this informative talk by John Seager\, Population Connection’s President and CEO\, which has been given to many UUA congregations across the country. \n John Seager’s presentation will address global population growth\, its causes and impacts\, and how we can meet those challenges. We add 200\,000+ people to the world every day\, and 75 million every year. This growth—which is mainly in the poorest places on earth—leads to vast poverty and environmental devastation. Yet there are more than 220 million women worldwide who want to limit their family size but who cannot afford contraception or who have never even heard of it. Population growth is the *only* global challenge for which all of the following are true: 1. We know how to fix it; 2. It’s relatively inexpensive; and 3. Women everywhere want it. \nPopulation Connection (formerly known as Zero Population Growth) is the preeminent progressive grassroots group for population education and advocacy\, with more than 500\,000 members and supporters\, including 50\,000 participating educators. They focus on achieving global population stabilization through universal awareness and access to voluntary family planning together with the full empowerment of women.          www.popconnect.org
