SUMMARY:January 2022 UWSA Unlearning Circle
DESCRIPTION:January’s UWSA Unlearning Circle will explore the People’s Institute for Survival and Beyond’s principle – Networking:\n \nWe recognize that the growth of a movement for social transformation requires networking – “building a net that works.” Networking means building principled relationships based on humane values.\n \nFor some of us\, the word “networking” may conjure images of settings where the goal is more important than the relationship\, and the quantity of relationships matters more than the quality of those relationships. In January’s Unlearning Circle\, we will discuss a different kind of networking–the kind of networking necessary for social change to happen.\n \nWe cannot do this work alone\, both because we need support to sustain ourselves and each other in this work\, and because undoing white supremacy requires a multitude of skills and perspectives. While the number of meaningful relationships any one of us can sustain is limited when we combine our networks\, connecting in coalitions\, we are unstoppable in effecting change.\n \nPlease join us to explore what it means to be in “principled relationships based on humane values\,” how we can build meaningful connections with one another\, and how we center relationship-building in our work to create a more equitable world.

SUMMARY:Multimedia Mosaic Mirror Shadow Box
DESCRIPTION:All ages and all skill levels welcome! Kids 12 and under must be accompanied by a ticketed adult.\n\n \nLearn the art of mosaic through this guided workshop. Your design can be whatever you’d like – think of inspiration from a trip\, a song\, a sport\, etc.\, or be inspired by the materials around you!\n\n \nParticipants are also welcome to bring their own special pieces to incorporate into their piece (shells\, broken pottery\, old jewelry\, hardware\, etc.). Hard materials will work best (ceramic\, glass\, metal\, etc.) rather than paper\, fabric\, etc.\nOnce you’ve got your mosaic pieces gathered\, you will learn to arrange them inside a shadow box. Note: boxes are MDF\, which is suitable for indoor use only.\n\n \nThis is an indoor workshop\, masks required.\n\n \n**About the Instructor:**\nMary is an artist and engineer who enjoys the challenge and inspiration of using found materials and reusing discarded materials. Her personal creative focus is currently on multimedia mosaics and kiln-formed glass. Mary has taught engineering labs at UC Berkeley and loves facilitating mosaic projects with kids. See Mary’s work at glasswheelhouse.com or on her IG @glasswheelhouse

SUMMARY:United Way MLK Jr. Day of Service 2022
DESCRIPTION:Join us Monday\, January 17 as we continue our annual tradition of gathering with our neighbors in service and learning to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.\n \nDr. King believed in the power of individuals to strengthen communities and achieve common goals\, and all of us here at United Way do too. That’s what our mission – bringing people\, ideas\, and resources together to fight poverty in our community – is all about.\n \nFor our 2022 MLK Jr. Day of Service\, we invite you to join us for one or several socially-distanced activities\, all of which carry on Dr. King’s legacy of anti-racism\, justice\, and equity. \n\nLearn: Take our self-guided walking tour. Walk through part of the area of Austin that was originally created to segregate Blacks in 1928\, and reflect on how walking played a critical role in the Civil Rights Era.\nGive: Donate books to the “I Am Brave” book drive! We’re partnering with Brave Communities to provide reading material to young people from vaccine-hesitant populations\, and bring awareness of the importance of diverse representation and story-telling in books.\nAdvocate: Advocacy is volunteerism\, and we encourage you to use your voice to enact change in 2022. The Texas Primary Election is March 1. Voter education impacts voter turnout\, so take some time today to make sure that you and your loved ones are registered to vote.\nVolunteer: Get outside this MLK Jr Day with the Austin Parks Foundation. Check out their Evergreen Volunteer Opportunities to foster a community that recognizes how parks play an important role in bringing people together. Help measure your impact by filling out this form when you’re done! Some parks we love include Rosewood Park\, Walnut Creek Park\, and Old Settlers Park in Round Rock!

Shane was the lead organizer for the #FixTheGrid People’s Hearing that provided a platform for Texans to tell Texas’s so-called leaders what they lived through during the February black outs\, and he subsequently led a Town Hall and a rally to pressure the Public Utility Commission to start listening to the public to actually “fix” the Texas grid. Recently\, Shane served as a co-chair of the Steering Committee of the City of Austin’s ambitious Climate Equity Plan\, propelling a shift in city planning to center racial equity to begin addressing climate change’s root causes like systemic racism. Outside of his day-job\, Shane served as a volunteer on Austin Justice Coalition’s policy team that helped win crucial and unprecedented victories in Austin to fight against police brutality and for systemic criminal justice reform—experience that is actually crucial to fight the climate crisis and fix the Texas grid. Community volunteers have been an integral part of these restoration efforts\, planting and caring for trees\, collecting and sowing native seed\, and doing erosion control. Jim’s work was recently recognized by the EPA with top honors for Low Impact Green Infrastructure Improvement.\n\n \nSIGN UP HERE (space is limited): https://traviscountytx-gov.zoomgov.com/…/WN_Iz4DiNS8QI…\nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar.

SUMMARY:Airplane Fuel Facility Project: Virtual Community Information Meeting
DESCRIPTION:AUS will host a virtual community information meeting for all Austin residents\, AUS passengers\, and airport community members to learn about this project.\n\n\nDate: Saturday\, January 29\, 2022\nTime: 3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.\nPlace: Online\, via Zoom \nClick here to access the Zoom meeting link– No registration is required\, just join the meeting at the meeting start time.\n \nThe meeting will be hosted in English with Spanish interpretation. All meeting materials and a recording of the meeting will be posted to this webpage after the meeting. The meeting will provide attendees a chance to learn more about the project\, including topics such as the facility’s operations\, the selected location\, safety design\, and environmental considerations. Attendees will have the chance to ask questions during a Question & Answer session.\n \nAbout the Airplane Fuel Facility Project: \n\nIn 1999\, Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS)\, which is owned and operated by the City of Austin\, opened its doors to Austin and Central Texas and has been growing ever since. 2019 was the airport’s busiest year\, with over 17 million passengers flying out of AUS. As the airport continues to recover from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic\, the demand for air travel has significantly increased and the expected number of flights and passengers will double in 20 years. With an increasing demand for air travel and development at the airport\, the airport must construct a second Jet-A fuel\, or airplane fuel\, facility to have enough fuel supply in the coming years to support a growing airport\, a growing city and a growing economy.\n \nSince the airport first opened\, the number of annual passengers has tripled and the current facility no longer meets the needs of Austin’s growing community. The facility currently has a 2–3-day fuel supply\, which doesn’t meet the 5-7 day industry standard and cannot support future air service growth for 2022 and beyond. AUS forecasts an increase in fuel demand by an average of 3% to 5% annually over the next ten years.\n \nThe new facility will provide a more reliable\, safe supply of fuel for the airlines and reliable air service for our community. It was identified as a development project through the airport’s 2040 Master Plan process.\n
