Did your sewing machine stop working? Has the chain on your necklace broken? Bring these items and more to our next Fix-It Clinic to learn how to fix your broken items from skilled volunteer coaches — for free!\n \nWhile we can’t guarantee your item will be fixed\, coaches will guide you through how the item works and what you may need for repair. Attendees are expected to actively participate and stay with their items during the repair process. Dropping items off is not allowed.\n \nWhat should I bring? \nYour broken item(s) and a desire to improve your repair skills! You may bring up to two items. Tools will be available for you to use\, but you can also bring your own tools if you prefer. Please bring any replacement part\, missing button\, fabric patch\, matching thread or other material you might need to help you fix your item. SUMMARY:Reconstructing Environmental (In)Justice
DESCRIPTION:Environmental injustice refers to the uneven distribution of environmental benefits and burdens based primarily on race\, but also other marginalizing factors such as income and gender. In this conversation\, Dr. Bruno will describe how this phenomenon spans across Texas and its history\, with a focus on Port Arthur\, Texas\, where the largest petrochemical refinery in the Northern Hemisphere is nestled within a Black community.\n\n \nTianna Bruno is a Provost’s Early Career Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Geography and the Environment at the University of Texas at Austin. Her research focuses on the intersection of Black geographies\, environmental justice\, and critical physical geography. We will be doing garden maintenance work from 8am-11:30ish during the hot months (July\, Aug & Sept.) 9am-noon all other months.\n  \nFestival Beach Food Forest is a grassroots pilot project neighboring the Festival Beach Community Garden and RBJ Residential Center in East Austin. We have transformed 2/3rds of an acre of City Park Land into an edible forest garden where visitors can openly forage and enjoy fresh food on the shores of Lady Bird Lake. Fruits\, nuts\, vegetables and herbs now flourish in this experimental pilot project to reclaim the public commons.

SUMMARY:Volma Overton Sr. Beach Renaming Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:Join Austin Parks and Recreation for the Volma Overton\, Sr. Beach Renaming Ceremony at Town Lake Metropolitan Park\, 1003 West Cesar Chavez St.\, on Saturday\, June 11 at 9:00 a.m. This is an outdoor park event\, so please dress comfortably.\n \nVolma Overton\, Sr. was born in Southeast Travis County and served in the Marines during World War II\, where he achieved the rank of lieutenant colonel. Soon after his service to our country concluded\, he enrolled in Huston-Tillotson University where he received a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry\, with a minor in Math.\n \nVolma Overton\, Sr.’s contributions to the City of Austin were critical and transformational. He was a lifelong champion and advocate for civil rights and racial equality. Such advocacy is captured in his leadership role at the National Alliance of Postal Workers\, a union comprised of primarily African American maintenance and janitorial workers\, where he served as president and advocated for racial equality and fairness in the postal system.\n \nIn 1962\, he became president of the Austin Chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). During his tenure\, he organized numerous demonstrations and actions to combat racial inequality\, systemic racism\, and institutional inequities.\n \nIn 1964\, he led successful advocacy efforts for the Austin City Council to sponsor an antidiscrimination ordinance and the constitution of the Human Rights Commission\, which was tasked with reviewing discrimination complaints. In 1965\, Volma Overton\, Sr. marched alongside Reverend Martin Luther King\, Jr. in the Selma to Montgomery March.\n \nVolma Overton. Sr.’s commitment to justice included reforming Austin and Central Texas’ local institutions. One of his many other accomplishments included desegregating the Austin Independent School District through a lawsuit he filed in 1970\, which named his daughter\, DeDra\, as the lead plaintiff. Additionally\, he fought alongside Boy Scout Troop #70 to integrate the swimming pool at Bastrop State Park in 1963.\n \nVolma Overton’s\, Sr.’s philanthropic efforts included a mentoring program for youth at Oak Springs Elementary\, as well as the conversion of the Overton House into a community center for African Americans in Austin.\n \nVolma Overton\, Sr. received accolades and awards for his pioneering civil rights work including NAACP Arthur B. DeWitty Award\, The Villager newspaper’s Austin Living Legends Award\, and University of Texas LBJ Award for Leadership in Civil Rights.\n \nVolma Overton\, Sr. was laid to rest with military honors at the Texas State Cemetery alongside governors\, senators\, legislators\, congressional leaders\, judges and other legendary Texans. His contributions to Austin and Central Texas have been invaluable. He is an integral part of Austin’s history.

DESCRIPTION:Water Forward is Austin’s 100-year integrated water resource plan to develop and implement diverse and environmentally conscious water management strategies to adapt to growth\, drought\, and climate change and ensure a sustainable\, resilient\, equitable\, and affordable water future for our community for the next 100 years.\n \nWater Forward was first approved by Council in November 2018. Since that time Austin Water has begun implementation of near-term plan strategies to help address future water supply needs. Austin Water has now started the process to complete the first 5-year update to the Water Forward plan and is targeting plan completion by 2024.
