SUMMARY:8th Annual Funky Chicken Coop Tour®
DESCRIPTION:From the Urban Poultry Association of Texas –\nAnnouncing the premier urban poultry event of 2016! The purpose of this tour is to encourage city residents to raise poultry at home by demonstrating the many ways that chicken (and other poultry) housing can be incorporated into urban residence without violating city ordinances or creating a nuisance. Get tickets here. \nOur theme this year is Chickens as Zero Waste Heroes. Participants will tour chicken coops located at homes around Austin to catch a rare firsthand look at the many innovative ways Austin’s chicken and other poultry keepers are tapping into backyard birds’ potential to transform household waste into valuable compost for lawn and garden. Learn how these delightful animals can help minimize the amount of waste our city sends to the landfill. Get inspired to create or enhance your own coop! \nThe tour will take place Saturday\, March 26\, the day before Easter. Coops are open for ticket holders from 10:00am-4:00pm. Buy advanced tour tickets online or in person from select Tour Sponsors: Callahan’s General Store\, Buck Moore Feed and Pet Supply and Wheatsville Co-op. Admission to the tour is $10 per person. Children 12 and under are free. Attendees who purchase advance tickets online will be entered on Tour Day to win a deluxe coop\, courtesy of Happy Hen Treats. Visit Tour website for additional ticket locations\, announcements\, volunteer signups\, and poultry-related news. \nAbout the tour: \nThe Funky Chicken Coop Tour (FCCT) is an annual self-guided event held the Saturday of Easter weekend in Austin\, Texas. SUMMARY:"Shades of Green" Environmental Talk Radio on KOOP 91.7 FM (La Loma (Hungry Hill) Trail-toxic east side dump site)
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on “Shades of Green” this Thursday from 1-2PM on KOOP 91.7 FM and streaming live at www.koop.org! \nThis week\, we’ll address the La Loma (Hungry Hill) Trail\, the east Austin path carved out by students over the past 50 years that passes over railroad tracks\, through waterways\, past a toxic dump & homeless camps just to reach East Side Memorial High School. Although the City of Austin has recently paved a multi-million dollar safe biking path nearby\, this community still endures treacherous terrain just to get an education. \nThe ATX Environmental Justice group\, Austin Sierra Club\, SANA (Springdale-Airport Neighborhood Association)\, and community activists invite Austinites out to a hike through this trail to experience what students endure to get their education. Click for the Facebook invite. \nOur guests will be:\nMax Anderson\, an Austin-based documentary filmmaker at a local film production company\, volunteer with ACAN (Austin Climate Action Network) and ATXEJ (Austin Texas Environmental Justice). He will be filming the hike around La Loma and creating a short documentary to bring awareness to the issues facing La Loma and Red Bluff Cliff. \nPete Rivera\, President of SANA (Springdale-Airport Neighborhood Association)\, member of ATX Environmental Justice\, and member of the Austin Sierra Club Executive Committee. \nVanessa Ramos\, a Native Austinite\, Multimedia Freelancer\, and a community organizer with Austin Environmental Justice Team\, Austin Climate Action Network and Undoing Racism Latino Caucus. \nDon’t forget at the top of the hour we open with the Austin EcoNetwork’s EcoCalendar highlighting green jobs\, events\, and volunteer opportunities across the city. You can find podcasts of our previous shows on our website and follow us on Facebook & Twitter!

SUMMARY:Hike for Environmental Justice: Though La Loma Trail Up to Red Bluff
DESCRIPTION:From the Springdale-Airport Neighborhood Association and the Sierra’s Club Environmental Justice Team –\nThe Springdale-Airport Neighborhood Association (SANA) and Sierra Club’s Environmental Justice Team (ATXEJ) invite you to hike and learn about Red Bluff in East Austin. We’ll begin at the intersection of Jain Lane & Stuart Circle by the Walnut Creek Hike & Bike Trail @ 9am\, Saturday April 9th. To get there\, take Shady Lane east of Airport Blvd. It turns into Custer Rd and then into Jain Lane. We expect to arrive up on top of Red Bluff – located south of dead end on Harold Court @11am. Plan to return by the same route\, or shuttle to Harold Court. \nFor more than 50 years\, East Austin’s Red Bluff vista has been neglected and forgotten. Referred to as “East Austin’s Mt. Bonnell” and now home to dumped chemicals\, trash\, and oil\, it’s time to push the City of Austin to restore this beautiful place and to organize for justice. \nJoin us on April 9th for a morning hike through the La Loma trail up to Red Bluff and hear directly from longtime residents of the neighborhood about their relationship with this land\, and from other community activists and organizers about the history of Environmental Racism and injustice in East Austin. \nUp-to-date hike info here on Facebook —> http://bit.ly/redbluffhike \nA new video on the Red Bluff area will give you lots of background \nLearn about: \n\nA history of environmental racism in East Austin.\nGentrification and displacement of people of color in one of Austin’s oldest neighborhoods.\nSafe trails and walking paths for students at Eastside Memorial High School.\nOrganizing for equitable and affordable community solar programs in East Austin.\nHow to be an ally in the fight for environmental and racial justice in communities of color.\n\nThis hike is open to all and will serve as a space for education and community organizing. Local filmmakers will also be on hand to document the hike and capture your impressions. Long term\, we are confident we can get the City to clean up La Loma\, but we aim to build a campaign that is centered on building power and supporting the demands and vision of residents in the Springdale-Airport neighborhood\, one of which is to turn the site into a nature preserve. \nTo learn more about SANA visit www.springdaleairport.org \nTo learn more about ATXEJ visit http://bit.ly/atxClimateTeam

SUMMARY:Ridesharing: An Austin Town Hall on the Future of Transportation Network Companies
DESCRIPTION:The Austin Forum on Technology and Society presents a special event – “Ridesharing: An Austin Town Hall on the Future of Transportation Network Companies (Uber\, Lyft\, and others) \n5:15 pm – Doors and Cash Bar Open \n6:00 pm – Presentation   \n7:00 pm – Reception \n  \nThe explosive growth of Uber and Lyft has proven the demand for simple access to rides. Enabled and powered by technologies such as smartphones and GPS\, these transportation networking companies (TNCs) have launched the ridesharing (or ridesourcing) industry rapidly and globally. In cities all over the world\, people have access to a simpler\, more predictable source of rides than the taxi industry has historically provided—and to a new source of income\, for drivers. This has other ancillary benefits as well\, such as potentially reducing the number of people driving while intoxicated. However\, the rapid emergence of ridesharing has occurred largely without regulation\, unlike other established transportation options. Without any civic regulation\, there are safety concerns for reasons such as lack of external validation of drivers\, and of negative economic impacts to other transportation industries and even to drivers. In Austin—a city now almost as infamous for the hassle of driving in traffic as is it famous for its many entertainment options (and the consumption that goes along with them)—there have been recent attempts at regulation. There is a general desire for the City to have TNCs as a transportation option\, but unfortunately\, a compromise on regulations agreeable to both sides—the City and the major TNCs—has not been reached. So\, there will be a special (and expensive) election on May 7 for the voters to decide. \nThe Austin Forum invites you to attend this special town hall meeting at which transpiration experts will objectively explain how TNCs work\, the current laws and policies (in Austin\, and in other cities)\, what the election means\, and what is likely to happen next for either outcome. They will then answer as many questions from the audience as time allows. The goal is for the panel of speakers to not advocate one position\, but to provide a “deeper dive” and informed debate about the issues. \nWe encourage everyone to vote\, and this event will help you be an informed voter. \nIn addition\, Rob Spillar\, City of Austin Transportation Director\, will share the City’s efforts and bid to win the US Department of Transportation’s $50M Smart Cities Challenge.
