This 9\,000 mile\, 23 day journey is designed with the goal of returning “Tokitae”\, aka Lolita\, a captive southern resident killer whale\, from a Miami aquarium to her pod in the Salish Sea. While sharing the story of Tokitae and her importance\, the Lummi will also join local indigenous leaders working to protect the land\, water and culture. \nFor countless generations\, the Lummi nation and their allies have been working to protect the Salish Sea from oil and gas drilling and industrial export facilities. For the past five years\, they have traveled thousands of miles with massive custom-carved totem poles from the Nation’s world-famous House of Tears Carvers. \nThe Lummi will join with Native Texas activists for a panel on Indigenous Resistance. \nTexas and the Northwest have been culturally connected for thousands of years. Our relatives stretch across these lands. Our relatives also stretch beyond nationality\, culture\, race or religion. Our relatives stretch beyond human\, animal\, plant\, desert\, mountain or ocean. DESCRIPTION:From the Sustainable Food Center –\nSharpen your knife skills\, learn where your favorite cuts of meat come from\, and meet a local farmer in our Whole Hog Butchery class! \nJoin professional butcher and co-founder of the Central Texas Meat Collective\, Julia Poplawsky\, in SFC’s The Happy Kitchen and learn how to break down a whole hog\, transforming it into roasts\, chops\, ribs\, pork belly and more. Learn what to do with the trimmings\, skin and bones\, and pick up tips for preparing and curing meat at home. Also joining us will be Leah Gibson\, owner of Boxcar Farm & Garden\, to talk about the pasture-raised\, heritage breed hog that we will be using in class. \nTo allow time for one-on-one instruction and in-depth discussion\, class size is limited to 6 hands-on participants and 6 observers (see below for ticket options). \nClass will cover: \n\nbulk meat sourcing tips;\nbasic hog anatomy;\nsafe handling of meat\, knives and butchering tools;\nhow to break down a whole side of hog into cook-ready cuts of meat;\nhow to use the leftover bones\, trimmings and skin\n\nYou will work together with Julia to produce all the cuts. Please wear closed-toe shoes\, comfortable clothes\, hair up or covered\, and bring a full coverage apron. Knives and cutting gloves will be provided. DESCRIPTION:From the Austin Network For International Impact Professionals –\nThe Austin Network for International Impact Professionals (ANIIP) is a forum for internationally-focused Austin-based social/environmental change professionals and aspiring professionals\, students\, and those interested in international connections. We hope to help Austin become one of the premier places for cultivating and taking action for positive social and environmental impact globally! We do this through meet-ups\, happy hours\, and other programming. \nOur May Happy Hour is being hosted and organized by Faire\, an Austin start-up working in the Fair/Ethical Trade and consumer goods space. Faire is very excited to be supporting ANIIP by sharing the 10th floor CLUB ROOM event space (at the Seaholm Residencies) and drinks this month! In addition to donated local craft Vodka from Dripping Springs Vodka Co.––which we’ll use to make a special signature ANIIP mixed drink :)––there will also be snacks and smiling faces. Attendees are encouraged to grab any other alcohol or snacks to bring with you- Trader Joe’s located right next door has a plethora of both! Consider this event informal\, semi-BYOB\, and a great opportunity to meet supporters of ANIIP\, and learn more about what Faire and ANIIP are doing 🙂

DESCRIPTION:From TreeFolks –\nBar crawl meets urban tree ID walk! UP Club is excited to partner with Tree Folks\, the Shoal Creek Conservancy\, and the Trail Foundation for this multi-stop event! We’ll be meeting at 5:00 pm at Boiler 9 in Seaholm District and leaving promptly at 6 pm for the first leg of our urban tree ID walk led by City Arborist – Keith Mars and the one and only Dr. Sarah Dooling! We’ll be at Ginger Man Pub around 6:45 before a second leg of the crawl and will end at Irene’s at 8 pm. \nFree RSVP on our eventbrite is mandatory! Tree Folks will be providing educational materials for those registered. Details on the route will be emailed out to registered attendees in advance of May 24th.
