In this workshop\, you will make your own one-of-a-kind rope using fabric scraps. Participants are encouraged to bring their own scraps\, and ACR will also have fabric available for purchase.\n\n \nPart 2: This workshop is intended for participants who have pre-made several yards of fabric scrap rope to craft with. We will make fabric scrap planters\, then spend some time exploring other possibilities. Participants are encouraged to bring a plastic container to wrap. DESCRIPTION:Our monthly Austin Sierra Club meeting will be online via Zoom.\n \nWe’ll start off with Announcements on current events… Tonite’s main program is Recycling and Household Hazardous Waste\, with Donald Hardee and Andy Dawson.\n \nHow does Austin’s Recycle & Reuse Drop-off Center work? Austin’s HHW facilities play an important role of getting dangerous materials out of the municipal waste stream. Many of the everyday items that come through these facilities can be more dangerous when mixed with other chemicals or in the hands of someone who may be uninformed about their chemical properties. These programs keep municipal solid waste workers safe while protecting equipment and the environment. What happens to these potentially dangerous items after they are collected at the drop-off centers?\n \nDonald Hardee is a Division Manager for the City of Austin’s Austin Resource Recovery Department. He manages the City’s Household Hazardous Waste Program\, Resource Recovery. DESCRIPTION:~En Espanol abajo~\nThe Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission (ICRC) for the City of Austin will hold a Public Forum to receive public comment on preliminary district maps.\n\n \n\nCome hear about the ICRC mandate\, how we executed this mandate\, and give us feedback on the initial maps.\nWe look forward to seeing you there!\n\n\n \nAll are welcome\, and light refreshments will be served.\n\n\n \nAll citizens of Austin and the public are invited to attend the first of five public meetings to provide public comment and feedback on the preliminary City Council district map and to hear from the ICRC about the process used for creating the new boundaries.\n\n\n\n \nProcedure\nAfter hearing from residents and reviewing public testimony from the five forums\, the next step for commissioners and the mapping specialist will be to discuss potential revisions\, incorporate those revisions and vote on a proposed final map in October. The ICRC will present a draft of the final map at three more public forums to receive input. DESCRIPTION:Last month\, ACR shift lead\, Ericka\, created an incredible tutorial for their spotlight and we absolutely loved the idea so much\, we had to turn it into a craft night! Using primarily bucket materials\, you’ll learn to create your very own crazy kaleidoscope. There will be plenty of sparkle to go around!\n\n \nThis is an indoor workshop. Masks and social distancing required.\n \n\nAbout Craft Night:\nFalling on the 4th Thursday of each month\, Craft Night is a long held tradition led by two of ACR’s dedicated core volunteers. Craft Night is not only an opportunity to celebrate the pure joy of making things\, but is also an excellent chance to explore the rich offerings of ACR’s wonderful bucket section. Your admission fee of $5 will entitle you to fill a bucket with items from our bucket section that can be used for that evening’s project (along with whatever else happens to tickle your fancy)! Pack it to the brim if you’d like to get every bit of your $5 worth! Your instructors will organize a project for each class and after walking you through the framework\, will turn you loose to gather items for your project so you can commence to crafting. We’ll provide tools and any specialty items you might need to complete the project.\nCraft night is appropriate for ages 12 and up. Minors must be accompanied by an adult and each person is required to purchase a ticket.

He has been a Citizens’ Climate Lobby volunteer for four years. He and his wife Cecilia tend a xeriscaped yard and harvest rainwater with a 1\,000-gallon tank. DESCRIPTION:Climate Change Committee Meeting \nJoin us on Zoom! https://zoom.us/j/5133069449\n \n6:30-7:15 or 7:30 – Brent Bellinger\, Ph.D. Blue-green Algae (Cyanotoxins) in Austin\n \nLady Bird Lake is recognized as one of the most important ecological amenities to the Austin region. Unfortunately\, in 2019 a number of dogs became sick and passed away after swimming in the water body and being exposed to toxic cyanobacteria mats. Thereafter and continuing in 2020 and 2021\, we have monitored the presence of toxins in the algal mats that developed in the summer\, and the water quality\, hydrology\, and temperatures associated with the proliferations. In 2021\, we also initiated a pilot program toward mitigating the growth of potentially toxic cyanobacteria by working to cap-and-bury sediment phosphorus\, thereby making it unavailable to the benthic cyanobacteria for growth. This webinar summarizes our findings and makes inferences about the conditions that have given rise to the blooms in the reservoir and hypothesizes as to what has changed in the reservoir in recent years to have potentially changed ecosystem conditions that now supports toxic cyanobacteria.\n \nBio – I have been a senior scientist with the City of Austin’s Watershed Protection Department for about 7.5 years. My research looks at ecological structure\, function\, and condition\, the influence of stressors on ecological integrity\, and adaptive management\, mitigation\, and restoration options to ensure the highest water quality available to the local communities. I received by bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point and my Ph.D. from Michigan Technological University. After graduation\, I held post-doctoral appointments with the University of Florida/South Florida Water Management District and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.\n \n7:15-8:00 Climate Change Committee Meeting – Discuss Action Teams and allow people to sign up to continue the work to stop climate change\, an imperative if we want our current civilization to survive. We’ve formed Action Teams on Austin Energy\, the Permian Pipeline\, Rio Grande Valley Support\, Carbon Fee & Dividend\, People Power\, Data Entry\, and Presentations and more. We have identified additional action teams we’d like to form\, including Transportation\, Climate Justice\, Partner Organizations\, School Education\, and Social Media. Whether you have only minutes a month or hours a day\, join us to build a mass movement to stop climate change. Or join another group fighting this vital cause.
