SUMMARY:Clean Energy Beers
DESCRIPTION:From CleanTX –\nClean Energy Beers is held on the first Monday of every month after work at Uncle Billy’s Brew & Que. Clean Energy Beers started off in April 2009 as an informal extension of Dr. Michael Webber’s office hours at U.T.\, and has evolved into a regular gathering of those interested and involved in cleantech. Five years later\, the monthly tradition is still going strong. \n“Clean Energy Beers has no formal agenda – it’s laid-back fun\, with only one requirement – you have to like at least one of the following: beer\, bar-b-que\, or clean energy\,” said Dr. Webber. \nThe event brings together a wide variety of people from Austin’s growing clean energy community. At Clean Energy Beers you’ll meet with job hunters looking for work\, employers looking for employees\, investors looking for inventors\, inventors looking for investors\, business partners seeking deals\, “and people who just like hanging around other people who like energy and sustainability.

SUMMARY:Creek Crew Happy Hour: Environmental Research In Panama
DESCRIPTION:From the Save Barton Creek Association –\nThis month we will be hearing from UT student\, Carinne\, on her recent research in Panama. \nCome out to this month’s Creek Crew Happy Hour to learn more about environmental issues faced in Cerro Punta\, Panama. This area is often referred to as “the bread basket” of Panama because it produces a majority of the produce nationwide. Located next to two protected areas\, this biodiverse region has been facing issues from soil erosion\, river pollution and intensive agrochemical use which raises differing concerns within the community. The findings of this study express community views and emphasize the needed collaboration within the community to create a sustainable future.

SUMMARY:Free Class: Plant Propagation
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, August 18th at 10am – “Plant Propagation” with Stacie Primeaux.   \nIt is simple and easy to propagate plants.  Some of the most common ways plants are propagated or multiplied are by growing seeds\, root division and stem cuttings.  Stacie will discuss which process is most appropriate for specific species. \nDo you have a favorite plant you want to share with friends or one you just can’t find anywhere to get more?  Dividing plants and taking cuttings allows you to greatly increase the number of plants you have so they can be shared\, sold or planted in the landscape.  You never knew it could be so simple!  Stacie has many years of experience working at the Natural Gardener on the grounds and as well as the Info Desk.  Let her get you started on your project!

(made by you\, a friend\, an artist\, your choice)\nLearn: Shiree will demonstate a “suprise” activity using reuse materials.\nPlay: Create great stuff! Items from Bucket will be free but not materials from the front of the center.\n\nWe love being able to offer these craft nights free to the public! But please\, if you are not able to make it than cancel your reservation so that another person may take advantage. These fill up fast yet attendance has been very low. Hope to see you there! You can RSVP here.

SUMMARY:Free Class: Plant Propagation
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, August 21st at 10am – “Plant Propagation” with Neil Schmidt.   \nIt is simple and easy to propagate plants.  Some of the most common ways plants are propagated or multiplied are by growing seeds\, root division and stem cuttings.  Neil will discuss which process is most appropriate for specific species. \nDo you have a favorite plant you want to share with friends or one you just can’t find anywhere to get more?  Dividing plants and taking cuttings allows you to greatly increase the number of plants you have so they can be shared\, sold or planted in the landscape.  You never knew it could be so simple!  Neil has experience working as Propagation Specialist for the Ladybird Johnson Wildflower Center and the Info Desk at The Natural Gardener.  Let him get you started on your project!

SUMMARY:Sierra Club Book Club: Unstoppable By Bill Nye
DESCRIPTION:From the Sierra Club –\nWe’ll be discussing the book “Unstoppable: Harnessing Science to Change the World” by Bill Nye. I have heard good things about this book and look forward to reading it. \nAmazon.com describes it as…\n” In UNSTOPPABLE\, Bill Nye crystallizes and expands the message for which he is best known and beloved. That message is that with a combination of optimism and scientific curiosity\, all obstacles become opportunities\, and the possibilities of our world become limitless. With a scientist’s thirst for knowledge and an engineer’s vision of what can be\, Bill Nye sees today’s environmental issues not as insurmountable\, depressing problems but as chances for our society to rise to the challenge and create a cleaner\, healthier\, smarter world. ” \n**The audible version of this book is narrated by Bill Nye\, himself\, and I have heard that he’s does a great job. \nSeptember’s book will be “Desert Solitare” by Edward Abbey. This book is regarded as one of the finest nature narratives in American literature. He was a park ranger and conservationist. It’s a collection of vignettes about life in the wilderness and the nature of the desert itself. \nThe book club will meet at the “Rock Garden” picnic tables. These are located uphill from the Zilker Hillside Theater.
