SUMMARY:SFC: Products of the Beehive
DESCRIPTION:From the Sustainable Food Center –\nCome learn about the sweetest part of beekeeping–harvesting honey and beeswax! In this class you will learn how bees make honey and beeswax and then watch demonstrations on how beekeepers extract both from the bee hive. Learn about how flowers influence the taste and consistency of honey and taste several local single-origin honeys. We will also demonstrate how to render beeswax and leave you with lots of ideas of how to make your own lip balms\, salves\, and candles. \nThis class is hands on\, and students will get to cut their own comb to sample\, jar and infuse their own honey\, make an encaustic monotype (painting with beeswax!) and make an assortment of products made from beeswax. This class is perfect for beekeepers and non-beekeepers alike. Everyone will leave with their bellies full of honey and with several products made from our local and organic beeswax. You will also learn about the importance of native bees and how to attract them to your garden. Tickets can be purchased here.

SUMMARY:The Power Of Environmental Justice
DESCRIPTION:From Green Is The New Black –\nMonday\, April 16\, 6:00-8:00 pm\nBeverly Wright on “The Power of Environmental Justice” \nBeverly Wright\, founder and Executive Director of the Deep South Center for Environmental Justice\, has for decades worked throughout the Southern United States to develop minority leadership for environmental\, social\, and economic justice along the Mississippi River Chemical Corridor and Gulf Coast Region. SUMMARY:Sierra Club Book Club - Second Nature: A Gardener's Education
DESCRIPTION:From the Sierra Club –\nWe’ll be discussing the book “Second Nature: A Gardener’s Education” by Michael Pollan. I’m 60 pages in and am impressed by his observations and his abilities as an essayist. This is Michael Pollan’s first book and he has written many others on society’s relationship with food. \nWe’ll be meeting at Zilker Park at the Rock Garden Picnic Tables\, located uphill from the Zilker Hillside Theater. \nAmazon.com describes it as…\n” A new literary classic\, Second Nature has become a manifesto not just for gardeners but for environmentalists everywhere. “As delicious a meditation on one man’s relationships with the Earth as any you are likely to come upon” (The New York Times Book Review)\, Second Nature captures the rhythms of our everyday engagement with the outdoors in all its glory and exasperation. ” \nMay’s book will be “Wild Ones” by Jon Mooallem. This book dives into people’s relationship with wild animals. The NY Times described it as a book that presents information from the front lines of wildlife conservation and blends it with a lively cultural history of animals in America….”This is not a book about wilderness; it’s a book about us.” \nIf you have a book suggestion for the book club\, mention it in the comments below and we’ll discuss them at the end of every book club meeting.

SUMMARY:Power Up! Placemaking Through Art And Renewable Energy
DESCRIPTION:From the City of Austin –\nIn this Imagine Austin Speaker Series event\, we are teaming up with the Austin Parks and Recreation Department\, Office of Sustainability\, Austin Energy\, and the Energy Institute at the University of Texas to bring in the founders of the Land Art Generator Initiative. Through their work\, our speakers – Elizabeth Monoian and Robert Ferry – develop global partnerships around projects that address issues of climate and sustainability through the lens of creativity. Their discussion will address the following: \nThe great energy transition will have an impact on our built environment\, our parks\, our culture\, and our visual landscape like no other technical shift since the automobile. By presenting examples of utility-scale renewable energy infrastructure as public art\, the Land Art Generator Initiative (LAGI) is inspiring the public about the beauty of our sustainable future and showing policy makers and city planners that distributed energy resources can be placemaking tools\, economic development drivers\, and educational venues while they help to power the grid and implement a clean energy revolution. \nRecreational spaces like Seaholm Waterfront and parkland at the former Holly Shores Power Plan have the potential to tell the stories of power generation past and present through public art. \nLearn more at austintexas.gov/imagineaustin/speakerseries \nParking at the Zach Theater is $1 per hour.\nPlease consider using alternate forms of transportation to get to this event. The Zach Theater is accessible by the 803\, 3\, 338\, and 484 bus lines. Try using the CapMetro trip planner to find a route: https://www.capmetro.org/planner/

SUMMARY:USGBC Central Texas Luncheon – WATER: NON-PARTISAN BUT TOTALLY POLITICAL
DESCRIPTION:From the US Green Building Council (USGBC) –\nJo Karr Tedder is President of Central Texas Water Coalition\, an organization she and a small group of advocates founded in 2011. The group grew from her experience on LCRA’s Water Management Plan Stakeholder Advisory Committee in 2010\, when it came to light that Highland Lakes businesses and residents were not at the table in water-use planning. \nJo Karr is a recognized authority on water issues and regularly speaks on behalf of the need for changes to how water is managed and valued. She is a native Texan\, a former educator and education administrator\, and a political consultant. After living and working on the East Coast\, she returned to Texas and has resided on Lake Buchanan since 2001. \nCTWC’s mission is to advocate for the Highland Lakes’ role as an irreplaceable natural resource that drives an important regional economic engine for the State of Texas and to bring together concerned citizens as a constituency.Partners of the coalition include lake residents\, business owners\, municipal officials\, home owner associations\, environmentalists and stakeholder organizations. \nRegister at:  http://usgbctexas.org/event-2896823 \n

SUMMARY:Resilient Nature: Discordant Harmony and the New Ecology
DESCRIPTION:From the City of Austin Development Services Department/ Nature In The City – \nThis year Dr. Kevin Anderson will take us on an exploration of “Nature and the American Mind”\, examining the complex story that threads throughout our history and shapes our beliefs\, policies\, science\, and management practices today. This 12-part (and free) lecture series continues in April with the talk\, “Resilient Nature: Discordant Harmony and the New Ecology.” \nWe now live in an age of global ecological change\, in which\, it is argued\, humans dominate the Earth so completely as to warrant declaring a new geological age\, the Anthropocene. The understanding of nature in this new age is built on ideas of “new ecology” where disequilibrium\, change\, and discordant harmony are more fundamental than integrity\, stability\, and balance\, and\, as the German ecologist Ingo Kowarik says\, “the reference point is not an original condition of a natural landscape\, but rather a condition defined based on the current site potential and the greatest possible degree of self-regulation. From this perspective\, therefore\, the natural capacity for process is the central point\, not a particular\, retrospectively determined and often idealized\, picture of nature.” \nJoin us as we explore the emergence of the concept of resilient nature and the new ecology of the Anthropocene. \nCan’t make it to the talk in person? Check out podcasts of Dr. Kevin Anderson’s presentations here. \nAdditional event details: \nOne Texas Center\, Room 325\nFree parking available. Ticket required for validation.

SUMMARY:Easy Earth Day Hike
DESCRIPTION:From the Sierra Club –\nWe’ll start out on the northern part of the Little Walnut Creek parkway that will eventually extend to Walnut Creek Park in north Austin and follow it up to the construction to see where the extension of the trail is going to be built. Then we’ll head back to the trail along the creek and with any luck\, we’ll get to see a waterfall on our way to Duval Road. The trail leads to a tunnel under Duval and we’ll discuss the construction of Duval Road for flood control downstream. The hike will be about 4 miles and takes about 2 hours. \nThe trail is rocky and hilly leading down to a dry creek bed. The trail along the creek is at the base of a 25 foot cliff wall. Bring water and wear sturdy hiking shoes. It’s okay to bring a dog on a leash. THIS WILL BE AN EASY HIKE. \nJoin us for food and drink afterwards. \nA small donation is appreciated to help with SC expenses. You can RSVP here.

SUMMARY:Earth Day Celebration: TreeFolks Sapling Giveaway
DESCRIPTION:From TreeFolks and Vista Brewing –\nCelebrate Earth Day at Vista Brewing! Starting at 11am\, our friends from the non-profit organization TreeFolks will be onsite to talk about importance of caring for the trees of Central Texas!\nThey are helping Vista guests spread the love by giving away FREE saplings\, including will include American elm\, pecan\, and prairie flame-leaf sumac (while supplies last). \nIn honor of TreeFolks\, Vista will be donating $1 from every pint of our Merriwether IPA (made with ingredients foraged from Vista’s property) sold on Earth Day to aid their cause. Trees are core to Vista’s mission\, and we would like to support the planting of more trees across our state. \nTreeFolks empowers Central Texans to build stronger communities through planting and caring for trees. Since 1989\, TreeFolks has engaged thousands of volunteers to plant more than 2.5 million trees on public and private lands. Planting trees is a powerful means of connecting volunteers with their community\, their neighbors\, and the environment. \nHope to see you on Earth Day!
