SUMMARY:Discussion of "Cost of Cool" & "Lost in Austin"
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an online discussion on June 18th! \n\n\n\n\nOnline via Google Meet. Register to receive the Meet Link. \nIf there is one constant about Austin\, it is the following — since its founding in 1839\, the city has almost always featured rapid growth\, change\, transition and evolution. \nIn recent years\, much of this growth and evolution has been pushed by the rise and consolidation of the tech industry in Central Texas. Two relatively new books (“Cost of Cool: Austin’s Tech Growth and the People Left Behind” and “Lost in Austin: The Evolution of an American City: An Insightful Dive into Austin’s Rapid Evolution\, Discover the Changing Face of this Iconic City”) explore the positive and not-so-positive changes that the tech boom has brought to the city’s personality. \nJoin us on Thursday evening\, June 18 as we discuss these two books\, as well as talk more broadly about where the city of Austin is now and where it is going in the future. \nAttendance Instructions \nThe discussion will be held online via Google Meet. Please register to receive the meet link!

SUMMARY:Tree ID for Seed Savers at the Natural Gardener
DESCRIPTION:Have you been wondering what kind of tree is growing in your yard? Maybe you want to learn a fun new skill? Well\, you’re in luck\, because the Central Texas Seed Savers and TreeFolks are coming to The Natural Gardener to lead a Tree ID lesson to help you learn a little more about what’s growing around you! \nYou will learn how to identify native trees and how to safely and ethically collect seeds to donate to the TreeFolks Seeds To Trees Native Nursery. \nMeet your walk leader at the classroom tent. \nThe Central Texas Seed Savers is a growing network of people who love seeds with the mission of preventing the extinction of ecologically and culinarily important plants in the Central Texas Region. \nTreeFolks was founded as Austin’s Urban Forestry non-profit in 1989. Since then\, TreeFolks has grown to work with communities throughout Central Texas in community tree planting\, tree giveaways\, education\, and urban-wildland reforestation efforts. Our mission is to empower Central Texans to build stronger communities through planting and caring for trees. \nThis training is free and open to anyone\, but please register to attend.

SUMMARY:Beyond the Petal: Texas Native Plants and Their Pollinators
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Old Bakery & Emporium for an art exhibition featuring the work of The Lone Star Botanical Artists \n\n\n\n\nThe Lone Star Botanical Artists is a statewide circle of the American Society of Botanical Artists\, an organization “dedicated to providing a thriving\, interactive community that perpetuates the tradition and contemporary practice of botanical art.” \nEach piece in this exhibition grows out of that act of attention\, and together they form Beyond the Petal: Texas Native Plants and Their Pollinators—a living story of connection. In the structure of a leaf\, the brief life of a bloom\, and the quiet resilience of a threatened species\, we find both subject and story. Butterflies\, bees\, and birds move through these works as they do in the landscape\, drawn to the plants that sustain them and\, in turn\, carrying pollen that allows these communities to endure. \nAt the opening reception\, we are pleased to welcome Kyle Cheesborough\, Director of Gardens and Collections at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center. He will share insights into pollinators and their vital relationships with native plants\, offering a deeper perspective on the living connections that inspire this exhibition.

SUMMARY:Summer Education Series: Mountain Cedars
DESCRIPTION:Event Date: Saturday\, June 27th\nTime: 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM\nLocation: virtually on Google Meet\, or in person at Hornsby Bend Center for Environmental Research\, 2210 FM973\, Austin\, TX 78725 \nPLEASE REGISTER HERE \nFor more than 100 years\, we’ve fought the woody brush spreading across the limestone regions of Texas\, called karst country. Much of this woody cover consists of native juniper trees\, commonly called mountain cedars. Instead of causing harm\, we now know mountain cedars act as ecosystem engineers to improve and sustain Texas karst country function. Come learn about these benefits and what we can do to use mountain cedars as another nature-based solution to help enhance soil health\, groundwaters\, productivity\, property values\, and resilience. \nElizabeth McGreevy\, a sixth-generation Texas and Texas A&M graduate\, is a natural resources ecologist and author of Wanted! Mountain Cedars\, Dead and Alive. The owner of Land Steward\, she relies on more than 25 years of experience to produce ecosystem-based management plans for Hill Country landowners. In 2022\, she founded Project Bedrock\, now in partnership with The Watershed Association\, to promote using mountain cedars and other nature-based solutions to regenerate the limestone karst country regions of Texas. \nThis training is free and open to anyone\, but you must register to attend. If you have any questions or concerns\, please contact Gillian: volunteer@treefolks.org\, (512) 761-8738 cell

SUMMARY:This Land Is Your Land: A Conversation With Beverly Gage
DESCRIPTION:We invite you to join us on Tuesday\, June 30\, for a conversation with Pulitzer Prize-winning author Beverly Gage on her recent book This Land is Your Land: A Road Trip Through U.S. History. First Light Books co-founder Taylor Bruce will moderate the conversation. \nThis evening is hosted in partnership with First Light Books and the Dolph Briscoe Center for American History at The University of Texas at Austin and will be part of the LBJ Presidential Library’s series celebrating the new exhibit The American Experiment. \n6:00-6:30 p.m.  Arrivals + The American Experiment exhibit access + book sales\n6:30-7:45 p.m.  Conversation with Beverly Gage\, moderated by Taylor Bruce\n7:45-8:45 p.m.  Reception + book sales and signing + The American Experiment exhibit access\nAbout the book \nRide along with Pulitzer Prize–winning historian Beverly Gage as she travels the country to see the museums\, historic sites\, roadside attractions\, reenactments\, and souvenir shops where Americans learn—and fight—about our history. From the birth of the nation in Philadelphia to Disneyland and the California dream\, This Land Is Your Land offers a guided tour of thirteen places and thirteen key moments that define America’s greatest successes and challenges. \nThe year 2026 marks the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence\, a document that proclaimed the liberty and equality of all human beings\, but produced a country that often failed to agree upon—or live up to—those ideals. This Land Is Your Land is for everyone who wants to find that history—to experience it and confront it\, to celebrate it and condemn it—in the places where it happened. \nGage shows that Americans can face their past and still love their country. Toss the book in the back seat—or listen on audio with the windows down—and join the journey. \nBook sales and signing\nThe Store at LBJ will be selling copies of This Land is Your Land: A Road Trip Through U.S. History onsite from 6:00-6:30 p.m. and again following the program. Beverly Gage will be signing copies of the book following the program. \nBy purchasing through the Store at LBJ\, you support a local cultural institution. All proceeds from sales support our programming\, exhibits\, and educational initiatives at the LBJ Presidential Library. \nAbout the speakers \nBeverly Gage teaches American history at Yale. Her book G-Man: J. Edgar Hoover and the Making of the American Century received the 2023 Pulitzer Prize for Biography\, the Bancroft Prize in American History\, the National Book Critics Circle Award for Biography\, and the Los Angeles Times Book Prize in Biography. She is also the author of The Day Wall Street Exploded: A Story of America in its First Age of Terror\, and writes for numerous journals and magazines\, including The New Yorker\, The New York Times\, and The Washington Post. \nTaylor Bruce is a writer\, editor\, entrepreneur\, and bookshop owner based in Austin\, Texas. He’s spent the past quarter-century exploring the boundaries of storytelling and place via media\, publishing\, brand content\, and brick-and-mortar business. After a career in magazine journalism\, Taylor created and launched the indie publishing brand Wildsam in 2012. The series of field guides reimagined the travel genre with deep literary soul and classic design. Wildsam built a cult following behind the brand’s comprehensive point of view\, its evocative voice\, and a who’s-who lineup of cultural contributors. Wildsam published over 65 guides\, selling over 1 million copies across 2\,000 shops\, hotels\, museums\, and national retailers. In 2022\, Taylor sold Wildsam to the Fortune 500 company Camping World\, where he led all media and publishing until 2025. Taylor has worked closely with 100+ emerging and iconic brands across adventure\, fashion\, hospitality\, auto\, and technology\, to craft strategic connections to place. He serves as an advisor to Faherty Brand and is the co-founder of a bookshop-cafe concept called First Light.\nAbout The American Experiment exhibit \nThrough an exceptional partnership with the National Archives and Records Administration and the Briscoe Center for American History\, the LBJ Presidential Library will showcase extraordinary original documents that have shaped the course of American history. Across four rotating exhibitions on display May 30 through January 10\, visitors will encounter defining moments—from the Brown v. Board of Education decision and the Fourteenth Amendment to the Louisiana Purchase and the Wright Brothers’ Flying Machine Patent. \nDocuments on display on the evening of June 30th will include President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Day of Infamy Speech\, the treasury warrant for the purchase of Alaska\, deed of gift for the Statue of Liberty\, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo\, the Alien Enemies Act of 1798\, and President Woodrow Wilson’s April 2\, 1917 joint address to Congress leading to a declaration of war against Germany\, among others. \nThe American Experiment initiative pairs these iconic artifacts with dynamic public programs featuring leading historians\, authors\, and thought leaders. Together\, we hope to explore how the American story has unfolded over 250 years—and where it may go next.\nLocation and parking \nThe conversation will be hosted in the 10th floor Atrium of the LBJ Presidential Library. Free parking will be available at the LBJ Library visitors’ lot located at 2313 Red River Street.\nRegistration \nAdvance registration is requested as space is limited. Please register here.

SUMMARY:Summer Education Series: Ready\, Set\, Restore!
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursday\, July 16\, from 6 PM to 7:30 PM for a free virtual class with two presenters from Austin’s Watershed Protection Department. Meghan Slocombe will discuss the impacts of urbanization on water cycle processes and stream ecology\, and provide an overview of WPD monitoring. Liz Cardinal will teach us about land management practices in Grow Zones and the positive impacts of community stewardship in Austin on riparian health.   We will examine how concepts of urban stream ecology apply to the work that volunteers do in the Ready\, Set\, Plant! program and discuss how WPD protects our community’s lives\, property\, and environment by reducing the impacts of flooding\, erosion\, and water pollution. \nMeghan Slocombe is an Environmental Scientist in the Applied Watershed Science section of the City of Austin Watershed Protection Department. Her work focuses on monitoring water quality and assessing stream health across Austin. Meghan holds a Master of Science in Ecology from Utah State University and a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Meghan is passionate about community engagement\, climate resilience\, and science with real-world applications. She loves spending time in Austin’s beautiful streams\, whether she is out measuring water quality during the workday or enjoying a relaxing evening in her kayak! \nLiz Cardinal is a dedicated environmental stewardship professional with over eight years of experience working alongside nonprofit\, community\, and government organizations to drive positive change in parks and greenspaces. She currently manages the Grow Zone Program at Austin Watershed Protection. The program designates\, restores\, and protects over 260 acres of riparian zones in Austin watersheds. She works closely with nonprofit partners and citizen volunteers to help clean up creeks and waterways and carry out restoration projects like litter abatement\, invasive species removal and native planting.  She holds a B.S. in Environmental Communication from The Ohio State University\, and a M.S. in Science Education from Portland State University. \nThis training is free and open to anyone\, but you must register to attend. If you have any questions or concerns\, please contact Gillian: volunteer@treefolks.org\, (512) 761-8738 cell
