SUMMARY:1st Shoal Creek Watershed Stakeholder Meeting
DESCRIPTION:From the Shoal Creek Conservancy –\nYou are invited to join Shoal Creek Conservancy for the 1st Shoal Creek Watershed Stakeholder Meeting on Tuesday\, February 13 from noon to 1:30 pm at the Cirrus Logic Conference Center (700 West Avenue). Please look for the Conservancy signs\, and metered parking is available on the street nearby. Let us know if you will attend with a quick email and we’ll save you a lunch!\n \n\nWhy? As you likely know\, Shoal Creek is a 13-square mile watershed that spans from the Domain to downtown Austin. It is highly urbanized and suffers from many serious and interconnected water-related challenges – poor water quality\, devastating flooding\, erosion\, loss of native habitat and reduced spring flow.\n \n\nOur goal is to identify creative\, cooperative solutions to address Shoal Creek’s challenges and create a resilient\, healthy and safe creek through the development of Shoal Creek’s first watershed action plan.\n \n\nWho? We are gathering stakeholders like you (businesses\, nonprofit organizations\, and residents of the watershed) to identify goals for the future of Shoal Creek and to develop a plan to make this future a reality. And we’d like you to join us! We’re partnering with experts at the Meadows Center for Water and the Environment at Texas State and with Doucet & Associates. We are also working hand-in-hand with the City of Austin Watershed Protection Department.\n \n\nWhat? We will kickoff the effort on February 13 with the first of a series of stakeholder meetings. This first meeting includes a presentation about Shoal Creek Watershed challenges as well as the basics of watershed planning\, the timeline and the stakeholder process. We will end the meeting with small group discussions about what you think the biggest water-related challenges on Shoal Creek are and how you’d like to get involved.\n \n\nLunch will be provided! Please RSVP to Randy Peterman at volunteer@shoalcreekconservancy.org by February 1 to let use know you’ll attend. And\, if you are unable to make this first meeting\, please let us know if you’re interested in being involved as we move forward.

SUMMARY:Sierra Club Monthly Program: How Cities Lead With Mayor Steve Adler
DESCRIPTION:From the Sierra Club –\nHappy Hour /food and beverages (http://www.scholzgarten.com/): 6-7 pm \nSocializing and informal discussions on current events: 6-7 pm \nAnnouncements and program begin at 7 pm \nPROGRAM: How Cities Lead with Mayor Steve Adler. \nAt the same time the United States pulled out of the Paris Climate Accord\, Austin increased its renewable energy goals. Now thanks to a recent purchase of solar\, Austin will get most of its power from renewable sources by 2020. Austin is leading on climate change because most of the progress called for by the Paris Climate Accords need to be made in cities. \nOn affordability\, Mayor Adler and the Council created a new property tax break for homeowners\, increased the senior and disabled property tax exemption\, and lowered electric rates for everyone in town. Mayor Adler has also completed the Mayors’ Challenge to End Veteran Homelessness\, sponsored the Strategic Housing Blueprint to increase the housing supply for the working poor\, and\, together with County Judge Sarah Eckhardt\, spearheaded the Austin Metro Area Master Community Workforce Plan to lift 10\,000 local residents out of poverty and into middle-income jobs over the next five years. And on mobility\, Mayor Adler led passage of the $720-million Smart Corridor mobility bond which was more than four times larger than any transportation bond previously approved in Austin and bigger than all the transportation bonds cumulatively passed in the previous 20 years. \nConsider biking\, carpooling\, or taking Cap Metro (http://www.capmetro.org/planner) to the meeting. Free parking is available after 6pm on San Jacinto and nearby streets. \n

DESCRIPTION:From the Sustainable Food Center –\nIf you are a new gardener or new to gardening in Central Texas\, and if you are looking for a holistic introduction to organic food growing\, then this Sustainable Food Center class is just for you. Taught by expert food gardeners\, this 3-part series combines hands-on activities and classroom discussion to provide participants with the knowledge and skills needed to start and maintain an organic and sustainable food garden. Whether you hope to garden in a yard\, on a balcony\, or at a community garden\, this class series will give you a strong foundation for growing your own food. \nClass 1: On day one\, participants learn what it means to garden organically. You also learn about the sunlight and soil needs of vegetable gardens\, and you work together to weed\, amend and plant one of the beds in SFC’s Teaching Garden. \nClass 2: On day two\, participants learn all about watering\, from the basics of watering seeds and transplants to water conservation. Participants also develop their observation skills by taking a guided tour through the Teaching Garden and the adjacent community garden. \nClass 3: Day three is devoted to composting and to organic pest and disease management. We begin with a bug hunt then continue with a discussion of environmentally-friendly ways to control pests and diseases. During the second part of class\, participants enjoy a hands-on lesson in building and tending compost systems. \nParticipants also take home a 45-page manual produced by SFC and designed specifically for Central Texas food growers. SUMMARY:Town Hall on the Democracy Voucher Program
DESCRIPTION:From Public Citizen Texas – \nJoin us for a town hall discussion with Seattle Councilmember Teresa Mosqueda on the Democracy Voucher program. \nThe Democracy Voucher program was designed to encourage a more diverse pool of candidates for elected office and ensure everyone has the opportunity to have his or her voice heard\, not just the wealthy and political elite. \nAdopted by Seattle in 2015 and put into practice in 2017\, the voucher program has resulted in a marked change in the composition of who is contributing to city campaigns in Seattle. The voucher program has made the universe of donors to political campaigns more diverse and more balanced with regard to geography\, gender and economic status. \nIn addition\, the program has served to empower candidates who may have been superbly qualified in every way except having easy access to wealthy donors – like Councilwoman Mosqueda. \nThe City of Austin is currently reviewing a Democracy Voucher program proposal and it could be at item on the November ballot.

SUMMARY:Sierra Club Book Club: A Passion For Nature
DESCRIPTION:From the Sierra Club –\nWe will be discussing the biography of John Muir who started the Sierra Club and was a fascinating figure in environmental history. The book I read was “A Passion for Nature The Life of John Muir” by Donald Worster. You are welcome to read any biography on John Muir if you’d like. \nHere’s an excerpt from Amazon.com about this book: \n“In Donald Worster’s magisterial biography\, John Muir’s “special self” is fully explored as is his extraordinary ability\, then and now\, to get others to see the sacred beauty of the natural world. A Passion for Nature is the most complete account of the great conservationist and founder of the Sierra Club ever written. It is the first to be based on Muir’s full private correspondence and to meet modern scholarly standards. Yet it is also full of rich detail and personal anecdote\, uncovering the complex inner life behind the legend of the solitary mountain man.” \nOur next book for March is “Cadillac Desert: The American West and its Disappearing Water” by Marc Reisner\, which has been a great read to learn about how we have engineered our water ways to allow us to grow large metropolises in the desert (Las Angeles\, Phoenix etc) and all of the crazy bureaucracy behind it. (There’s also a 4 part doc series on youtube about the book as well) \nThen April’s book is a lighter read called “Second Nature” by Michael Pollan. It’s a book on gardening and our place in the natural world. It’s very well reviewed. He’s a great author and I’ve read most of his books and he’s never let me down. May’s book is TBD\, feel free to suggest something in the comments and if you like someone’s suggestion\, then click the “like” button next to their comment.

SUMMARY:Wood Street Undertold Marker Ceremony

As the frontier City’s natural western boundary\, Shoal Creek became a settling point for formerly enslaved people following the Civil War. This event is co-hosted by Shoal Creek Conservancy’s Historic Bridges Committee and Shoal Creek Ambassadors\, the City of Austin Parks & Recreation Department\, the Texas Historical Commission and the Travis County Historical Commission.\n \n\nCoffee and a light breakfast will be provided. This is an outdoor event. Please dress comfortably. Metered parking is available along Wood Street and West 6th Street.\n \n\nPlease RSVP to development@shoalcreekconservancy.org.
