DESCRIPTION:Join us for a pop-up event at Seaholm Intake from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday\, January 28th.\n\n\n \n\nAustin Parks & Recreation’s Historic Preservation and Tourism Program invites you to an open house at the Seaholm Intake Building.\n\n\n \n\nUT School of Architecture (UTSOA) Senior Lecturer Robert Stepnoski and Project Designer Michael Rahmatoulin will be present to give visitors an overview of the advanced architectural modeling conducted for Seaholm Intake by UTSOA faculty and students.\n\n\n \n\nNo public parking or restrooms are available at this time. The closest facilities are across the street at the Austin Central Library.\n\n \n\nMore info about the Seaholm Intake Building:\nThe Seaholm Intake Facility is located on the banks of Lady Bird Lake and the Ann and Roy Butler Hike and Bike Trail. The Seaholm Intake facility was once the pump house for the Seaholm Power Plant complex and is an iconic Art Deco design. The Seaholm Intake Facility requires extensive renovations after sitting vacant and decommissioned as a power plant building for decades. The focus of the Phase 1 rehabilitation is to provide the necessary upgrades to allow for rejuvenation and activation of the space in the short-term\, while plans for the next phase of the Seaholm Waterfront Plan are developed.

DESCRIPTION:CLIMATE CORNER February 2023: Geothermal Can Work in Texas \nGeothermal is a renewable energy source used to heat and cool buildings\, supply hot water to your house\, and create energy for the electric grid with zero CO2 going into the atmosphere.  This energy source runs 24/7/365\, is synergistic with solar and wind power generation\, and eliminates lost heat from outdoor HVAC equipment.  You will find it available directly under your feet\, anywhere on earth.   \nThis technology requires drilling deep underground and circulating water through pipes to be used in multiple applications\, from heat pumps to steam turbines creating electricity for the grid.  This installation will require the skills and technology currently used by the oil and gas industry. \nConsidering that more than half of our global CO2 is created by heating and cooling buildings and houses\, the WPNA Climate Committee believes geothermal is the linchpin answer to replacing fossil fuels in Texas and around the world\, will protect our electric grid from failure due to weather calamity\, will dramatically reduce the cost of electricity\, and create lots of jobs.  On our next Climate Conversation program we will bring you a detailed explanation of the system with panelists working in the industry. \nScheduled to appear is Geothermal Engineer Kevin Kitz from Boise\, Idaho; Dawn Johnston\, Principal Director of Clearwater Reserves of Tyler\, Texas; and Joe Batir of Southern Methodist University.   \nWatch our program live on our YouTube channel Windsor Park Climate Conversation\, Wednesday February 8 at 7pm.  You can watch the program at any time after the broadcast\, where you can find all of our previous shows available 24/7. In-person attendees will be able to review the same materials and presentation as the online public hearing.\n \nThe purpose of the public hearing is to provide stakeholders an opportunity to review and provide comments on the draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) and the Preferred Alternative.\n \nThe I-35 Capital Express Central project is approximately eight (8) miles in length and would include the removal of the existing I-35 decks\, lowering the roadway\, and adding two non-tolled high-occupancy vehicle managed lanes in each direction along I-35 from US 290 East to US 290 West/State Highway 71. The project will also reconstruct east-west cross-street bridges\, add pedestrian and bicycle paths\, improve transit accommodations and make additional safety and mobility improvements within the project limits.

SUMMARY:Flooding Along Shoal Creek Bus Tour
DESCRIPTION:We invite you to join Shoal Creek Conservancy and Jose M. Guerrero\, P.E.*\, for a bus tour of the Shoal Creek watershed! On February 25th we will discuss the history of the Memorial Day flooding of 1981 along Shoal Creek\, strategies that have helped mitigate flooding of our urban creeks both before and after the 1981 flood\, and how water moves through developed watersheds.\n \nOur stops for this tour include Duncan Neighborhood Park\, Great Northern Dog Park\, Beverly S. Sheffield Northwest District Park\, Jefferson Street\, and the W 12th Street Bridge.\n \nAll ages are welcome\, with supervision. Please wear shoes you feel comfortable walking in and dress for the weather. At this time\, masks are optional.\n \n\n\nRegister here! Guerrero\, P.E.\, spent 37.5 years with the City of Austin’s Watershed Protection Department in numerous roles.  He retired from WPD in July 2021 after serving as Interim Director for 9 months and Assistant Director for 9.5 years. After graduating from the University of Texas at Austin in 1984 with a degree in Civil Engineering\, he joined the City of Austin Public Works Department’s Stormwater Management Division in January of 1985 and has served in various roles in flood mitigation\, erosion control\, and managing water quality stormwater control measures.  Early in his career\, he was directly involved in the construction of numerous field engineering projects in the Shoal Creek and Waller Creek watersheds.  He was also part of the charter team that created the Regional Stormwater Management Program (RSMP)\, which looks at alternate ways to comply with the water quantity detention requirements for developments.  He can be reached by email at jose.guerrero@austintexas.gov.

DESCRIPTION:Join TreeFolks for a 500 Tree Adoption event\, with free trees to Austin Energy Electricity customers through our NeighborWoods program. The TreeFolks NeighborWoods free tree program is a partnership with the City of Austin Community Tree Preservation Division and Austin Energy.\n \nWe will be at the George Washington Carver Museum and Cultural Center at 1165 Angelina St\, Austin\, TX 78702 for their Black History Month Kid’s Day on Saturday\, February 25th\, 2023. No need to pre-register – just come on by!\n \nTrees are available on a first-come\, first-served basis and we will distribute one tree per person in attendance. Please bring a Photo I.D\, Austin Energy Electricity Bill\, or Austin Library Card as proof of residency.
