SUMMARY:Give a Great Story Book Crafting Workshop
DESCRIPTION:You can help reduce waste this holiday season by refining your gift-giving skills. Instead of buying the newest gadget this year\, we encourage everyone to create lifelong memories with their loved ones\, give gifts with unique pasts and give a great story.\n\n \nJoin us to craft gifts out of books. In this workshop\, we will be using every part of discarded books to create two holiday gifts. From the covers\, we will be creating a hidden storage area. Give the gift of the perfect place to hide cables\, charging stations and remotes. We will then be using the pages of the books to create beautiful wreaths that are sure to make any room more festive. Two gifts\, one material\, and a great story to give your loved ones this year.\n\n \nWe will have a limited supply of books. Please bring your own\, if you are able. Selecting your own books creates a lovely opportunity to personalize your gift to the recipient. Are they a huge mystery fan? Do the titles create a message only known to you both? There are so many ways to add meaning to this gift.\n\n \nRegistration is limited to 30. Reserve your free ticket.\nMask policy: we will follow City masking policies on the day of the event. Currently\, we are in Stage 3 of the COVID risk guidance and masks are required while in City buildings. We will update you if that changes

SUMMARY:UWSA December 2021 Unlearning Circle
DESCRIPTION:UWSA’s December 2021 Unlearning Circle will explore the People’s Institute principle: Undoing Racism\, more specifically\, Tensions Experienced by People Who Identify as White in Racial Justice Work.\n \nWe can all agree that racism is harmful and we must work to eradicate it from ourselves and our systems. Undoing racism will be our topic for the December Unlearning Circle. This simple statement for messy\, complicated and intersectional work is broad and we will be focusing on working as self-identifying “white” people as we explore some of the tensions we commonly experience. While our intentions are good\, we often start down a path only to realize that we are engaging in practices that perpetuate racism. Sometimes\, we encounter seemingly contradictory messages that leave us unsure how to proceed\, that tempt us to drop out or paralyze us with fear of “getting it wrong”. The People’s Institute reminds us that Racism is the single most critical barrier to building effective coalitions for social change. How are we in accountable relationships when our actions and/or presence can be harmful in multi racial spaces? How do we balance compassion\, care and universal love with holding each other accountable? How does the tension between our desire to act and not being sure about what to do\, create a barrier to building effective coalitions?\n \nPlease join us this month to explore these confusing experiences and discuss what we can do to navigate these difficult situations so that we can be more effective co-conspirators.

SUMMARY:January 2022 UWSA Unlearning Circle
DESCRIPTION:January’s UWSA Unlearning Circle will explore the People’s Institute for Survival and Beyond’s principle – Networking:\n \nWe recognize that the growth of a movement for social transformation requires networking – “building a net that works.” Networking means building principled relationships based on humane values.\n \nFor some of us\, the word “networking” may conjure images of settings where the goal is more important than the relationship\, and the quantity of relationships matters more than the quality of those relationships. In January’s Unlearning Circle\, we will discuss a different kind of networking–the kind of networking necessary for social change to happen.\n \nWe cannot do this work alone\, both because we need support to sustain ourselves and each other in this work\, and because undoing white supremacy requires a multitude of skills and perspectives. While the number of meaningful relationships any one of us can sustain is limited when we combine our networks\, connecting in coalitions\, we are unstoppable in effecting change.\n \nPlease join us to explore what it means to be in “principled relationships based on humane values\,” how we can build meaningful connections with one another\, and how we center relationship-building in our work to create a more equitable world.

SUMMARY:United Way MLK Jr. Day of Service 2022
DESCRIPTION:Join us Monday\, January 17 as we continue our annual tradition of gathering with our neighbors in service and learning to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.\n \nDr. King believed in the power of individuals to strengthen communities and achieve common goals\, and all of us here at United Way do too. That’s what our mission – bringing people\, ideas\, and resources together to fight poverty in our community – is all about.\n \nFor our 2022 MLK Jr. Day of Service\, we invite you to join us for one or several socially-distanced activities\, all of which carry on Dr. King’s legacy of anti-racism\, justice\, and equity. \n\nLearn: Take our self-guided walking tour. Walk through part of the area of Austin that was originally created to segregate Blacks in 1928\, and reflect on how walking played a critical role in the Civil Rights Era.\nGive: Donate books to the “I Am Brave” book drive! We’re partnering with Brave Communities to provide reading material to young people from vaccine-hesitant populations\, and bring awareness of the importance of diverse representation and story-telling in books.\nAdvocate: Advocacy is volunteerism\, and we encourage you to use your voice to enact change in 2022. The Texas Primary Election is March 1. Voter education impacts voter turnout\, so take some time today to make sure that you and your loved ones are registered to vote.\nVolunteer: Get outside this MLK Jr Day with the Austin Parks Foundation. Check out their Evergreen Volunteer Opportunities to foster a community that recognizes how parks play an important role in bringing people together. Help measure your impact by filling out this form when you’re done! Some parks we love include Rosewood Park\, Walnut Creek Park\, and Old Settlers Park in Round Rock!

SUMMARY:MLK Day Food Drive
DESCRIPTION:On MLK Day each year\, we typically join the community March organized by the Austin Area Heritage Council to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King. The March has been cancelled this year in light of current COVID circumstances\, but we still want to follow Dr. King’s leadership and celebrate his teachings. We will host a food drive at Pease Park in recognition of MLK Day that will support Central Texas Food Bank on Monday\, January 17th.\n \nWe encourage you to participate in this food drive in one of two ways (or both!).\n \n1. Sign up to help us collect the donated food items on January 17th. Two hour shifts are open for this volunteer job throughout the day. If you can help in this way\, please register through our Volunteer page here.\n\n\n\n2. Bring canned food donations to the park to contribute to our food drive on January 17th anytime between 9am and 5pm. Most needed items include:\n\n\npeanut butter \n\n\ncanned chicken breast or tuna \n\n\ncanned low sodium vegetables \n\n\ncanned fruit in its own juice \n\n\ndry pinto beans \n\n\nbrown rice \n\n\ndry pasta \n\n\nnon-fat dry mild powder \n\n\n100% whole grain cereal \n\n\n\n\nCentral Texas has a food insecurity rate of 17.3% and Central Texas Food Bank helps fill this need of nourishment for individuals and families. Last year\, Central Texas Food Bank brought nearly 54 million meals to our community and into the hands of families and local nonprofits that need food assistance. 34% of food bank clients are children and teens and 64% of client households have at least one working adult.

SUMMARY:Virtual MLK Rally
DESCRIPTION:Due to concerns around the rising numbers of COVID-19 cases in the Austin-area\, the 2022 MLK Festival has been canceled.\n  \n\nInstead\, we will hold a virtual MLK Rally program on January 17th.Join us virtually as we celebrate the life and legacy of Martin Luther King\, Jr.\nWe are inspired to renew our commitment to recognizing and appreciating diversity while building bridges to unify and empower us all. Hear music from Blue Vinyl Crates\, Motivational Speakers\, and words from community leaders.\n\n  \nWe’d hoped to proceed with an in-person festival\, but the health and safety of our community is of the utmost importance. Please note that while the festival is canceled\, our other activities\, such as the Oratory contest and Youth Legacy Awards\, will proceed virtually.\n  \nSUPPORT THE CENTRAL TEXAS FOOD BANK \nAlthough our virtual-only event won’t be able to offer an opportunity for you to bring in-person food donations\, we can all still support the Central Texas Food Bank by volunteering with them or donating to them directly.
