SUMMARY:Radical Readers Book Club Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Radical Readers book of the month is Ponciá Vicêncio by Conceição Evaristo.\n\n\n \n\nPoncia Vicencio is the story of a young Afro-Brazilian woman’s journey from the land of her enslaved ancestors to the emptiness of urban life. However\, the generations of creativity\, violence\, and family cannot be so easily left behind as Poncia is heir to a mysterious psychic gift from her grandfather. Does this gift have the power to bring Poncia back from the emotional vacuum and absolute solitude that has overtaken her in the city? Do the elemental forces of earth\, air\, fire\, and water mean anything in the barren urban landscape?\n\n\n \n\nWe will be discussing this mystical story of family\, dreams\, and hope on Oct. 24th\, 2021. Reminder\, you do not have to read/finish the book to join the conversation.

SUMMARY:Solar Austin - Female Leaders In Distributed Generation + Solar Storage
DESCRIPTION:Register to join Solar Austin for our monthly happy hour on October 26 as we get the latest on energy storage from the industry’s female leaders.\n \n\nIn September and October\, Solar Austin’s Happy Hour spotlight has been shining on Female Leaders in Energy Storage. A few years ago storage was regarded as a luxurious add-on to a residential or commercial solar system. Now\, due to a decrease in cost\, increase in technology offerings\, and an ever-present risk of losing power\, storage has become almost essential to many new solar installations.\n \n\nToday\, Austin is lucky to claim the talents of three female experts in this space\, and it’s time we tap into their knowledge.\n \n\nSolar continues its rapid growth as an instrument of cost savings and resiliency across the “Distributed Generation” (DG) landscape through onsite generation of energy in homes and buildings. Yet\, when the grid is down\, or the sun isn’t shining\, it is storage that keeps the solar energy flowing. Moreover\, when the utility has high rates of electricity during peak rates or needs more power\, storage can be a key component to tap into for cost savings. This recent momentum of DG storage application continues to prepare us for a world of intelligent energy management and even energy sharing.\n \n\nJoin us on October 26th\, for our last virtual happy hour of 2021\, to learn and understand the basics and nuances of distributed generation storage. Madeline Acri of Soligent will speak on behalf of the residential energy storage perspective\, while Jenniffer Gallegos of Yotta unpacks commercial storage. All will be tied together by Judy McElroy of Fractal Energy Consultants who boasts decades of experience in the technical and financial aspects of storage. Together we will chart the path of where this exciting subsegment of the industry is presently and where it will be in the future.\n \n\nSo grab a drink and be prepared to satisfy all your storage curiosities with us! We look forward to seeing you virtually at this event\, and we hope you’ll stay tuned for even more updates on exciting end-of-year programs and events that Solar Austin has in store!\n \n  \nAbout our speakers: \n\nJudy McElroy is the Chief Executive Officer of Fractal Energy Storage Consultants (Fractal)\, a leading international energy storage consultant firm\, providing technical design and financial analysis and owner’s engineering of energy storage projects. McElroy is a chemist by trade with energy consultation services spanning over 6 Gigawatt of energy storage and hybrid generation projects. McElroy has expanded Fractal’s reach into regulated\, deregulated\, and emerging markets around the world supporting electric utilities and major developers transition into energy storage. McElroy has devoted major efforts towards creating utility education\, awareness\, and policy support to enable energy storage technology planning and procurement. Prior to Fractal\, McElroy was the Chief Marketing Officer for two energy storage companies and worked for 10 years as a chemist. McElroy is also a Founder of Fractal EMS\, a leading storage controls company\, and serves on the Board of Community Energy.\n \n\nJennifer G. Gallegos is a Stanford-trained engineer and a strategic marketing leader in the clean tech industry. She currently serves as the Director of Programs & Communications at Yotta Energy\, a startup based in Austin\, Texas\, that’s reimagining the way the world stores and uses solar energy. Gallegos is a licensed professional engineer in Texas. She has also written about a variety of topics including emerging technologies\, eLearning\, and design. Prior to joining Yotta Energy\, she held roles in project management\, building design\, sales\, and marketing. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering with a minor in Spanish from Stanford University and a Master’s degree in Fire Protection Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

SUMMARY:APPOINTMENTS PROJECT AUSTIN OVERVIEW
DESCRIPTION:The Appointments Project serves as a talent bank\, advisor and advocate for women seeking opportunities to lead their communities and works to attract diverse applicants for appointed positions on boards and commissions. The award-winning approach guides women through the process of applying for these positions and suggests applicants for appointment.\n  \nThis free overview will be conducted via webinar and allow Austin women to learn about leadership opportunities and guide them through the process of applying for these positions.\n  \nAbout The Appointments Project \nUnited WE tackles gender inequality on civic boards and commissions through its acclaimed Appointments Project® – the only program in the country that helps women get appointed to civic boards and commissions at the city\, county and state level.\n\nThe Appointments Project is a research-based program developed to increase the number of women serving on civic boards and commissions by providing resources and simplifying the process. The Appointments Project accelerates women’s power and influence by increasing their civic participation and is the only program helping expand civic appointments for all women at the local level.\n\nCivic boards and commissions make decisions about a wide range of issues like roads\, water\, and zoning to public health and elections—many times without a single woman at the table. The Appointments Project is dismantling the barriers that hold women back\, fast tracking women\, and calling local communities to action.\n  \nHow It Works \nThe Appointments Project® makes it easy for women to serve and for elected officials to appoint them. The Appointments Project serves as a talent bank\, advisor\, and advocate for women seeking opportunities to lead their communities and for communities seeking to increase diversity in civic leadership. United WE works to understand the unique culture of each community and the diverse populations they serve. We work with elected leadership to identify willing partner organizations to help establish credibility\, and encourage diverse participation in the Appointments Project. By registering for the Appointments Project\, candidates receive a toolkit of resources that serve as a roadmap for their civic leadership journey.\n  \nHow to Participate  \nPublic training events are planned for October 7\, 2021\, at 12pm CST and October 29th\, 2021\, at 12pm CST. “We encourage and invite everyone to learn more and join us in unlocking women’s potential for civic leadership\,” said Mayor Pro Tem Harper-Madison and Council Member Alter.

SUMMARY:Workshop: Guatemalan Worry Dolls
DESCRIPTION:According to Guatemalan legend\, if you tell these dolls your worries at night and put them under your pillow\, your worries will be taken away when you wake up. Make these cute little dolls for yourself or your friend!\n\n \nAbout the Instructor:\nI am Preeti Agrawal\, a craft blogger and watercolorist. In my work\, I am concerned with experiments that combine old and new. I am drawn to the modern craft sensibility but at the same time the traditional arts call to me. I love the interplay of the two as I adjust traditional arts to new mediums and materials.\n\n \nA concern for the environment and a reverence for nature pervades my daily life and my work: I save fabric\, remnants\, beads and the castaways of modern living and incorporate them in my work. Making things by hand gives me joy\, up cycling\, salvaging and repurposing materials gives me joy\, as a result my crafting world is the perfect marriage of two!\n\n \nFind out more about Preeti at:\nwww.facebook.com/preetishandmades\nwww.instagram.com/preetishandmades

SUMMARY:Sierra Club Monthly Program: Groundwater in Central Texas
DESCRIPTION:Our monthly Austin Sierra Club meeting will be online via Zoom. \nWe’ll start off with Announcements on current events… Tonite’s main program is “Our Impact on Groundwater and Local Climate in Central Texas – What We Are Learning”\, with Nico M. Hauwert.\n \nNico Hauwert’s passion for studying the water cycles over the Edwards Aquifer arose from his exploration of the forests and underground frontier of Austin beginning in 1979. His groundbreaking Austin-area studies included conducting the first direct groundwater tracing to discover groundwater flow across the aquifer occurs within days versus years\, the first detection of widespread groundwater contamination in the Edwards Aquifer in 1994\, and most precise measurement of recharge over the Edwards Aquifer in the Austin area using a climate tower coupled with other methods of verification. Since 2016\, he has served as Program Manager for the Balcones Canyonlands Preserve Program\, a department of the City of Austin’s Water. Nico taught geology for four years as adjunct professor with Concordia University. From 2000 to October 2016 he served as senior environmental scientist for the City of Austin Watershed Protection Department. From 1993-2000 he conducted research on the Barton Springs Segment as Assessment Program manager and senior hydrogeologist for the Barton Springs/Edwards Aquifer Conservation District. He fought wildfires as a summer ranger at Crater Lake National Park in Oregon in 1987. He has served as President of the Austin Geological Society. Nico completed his Ph.D. in 2009 from the University of Texas\, received an M.S. in Geology from University of Toledo in 1991\, and obtained a B.S. in Geology from University of Texas in 1984.\n \n\nThe URL to click on and join the meeting will be displayed after you RSVP. If you are new to Zoom\, tutorials are available online – example https://www.youtube.com/embed/hIkCmbvAHQQ . Using your camera and microphone is optional for the meeting.

SUMMARY:November 2021 UWSA Unlearning Circle
DESCRIPTION:November’s UWSA Unlearning Circle will explore the People’s Institute principle: Analyzing Power\n \nAs a society\, we often believe that individuals and/or their communities are solely responsible for their conditions. Through the analysis of institutional power\, we can identify and unpack the systems external to the community that create the internal realities many people experience daily.\n \nWe have been brainwashed to assign responsibility for what happens to people in our society solely to individual choices. Racism is ascribed to racist feelings and actions on the part of individuals\, instead of the systems and institutions that were set up to create racism\, and to re-create racism over and over again. Please join us in this month’s Unlearning Circle\, where together we will look at how racism was\, and is “done”\, shining light on the power exercised by legal\, economic\, and social institutions to oppress BIPOC communities.

SUMMARY:America Recycles Day: Plastic Film Collection
DESCRIPTION:Did you know stretchy plastics (like single-use bags\, plastic wrap and shrink wrap) don’t belong in your blue recycling bin? These “tanglers” are made of flexible\, stretchy material that gets wrapped up in the gears of the machinery at the recycling facility\, and shuts the system down. If they are stretchy\, clean\, and dry drop them off with a Zero Waste Block Leader to be recycled. Kitchen compost collectors will also be available for pick-up\, while supplies last.\n \nNovember 15 is America Recycles Day. To celebrate and move us closer to our zero waste goals\, our Zero Waste Block Leaders are hosting plastic film collection events\, like this one\, throughout Austin. Check out the map to see all locations.
