SUMMARY:Sierra Club Monthly Program: Recycling and Household Hazardous Waste
DESCRIPTION:Our monthly Austin Sierra Club meeting will be online via Zoom.\n \nWe’ll start off with Announcements on current events… Tonite’s main program is Recycling and Household Hazardous Waste\, with Donald Hardee and Andy Dawson.\n \nHow does Austin’s Recycle & Reuse Drop-off Center work? Austin’s HHW facilities play an important role of getting dangerous materials out of the municipal waste stream. Many of the everyday items that come through these facilities can be more dangerous when mixed with other chemicals or in the hands of someone who may be uninformed about their chemical properties. These programs keep municipal solid waste workers safe while protecting equipment and the environment. What happens to these potentially dangerous items after they are collected at the drop-off centers?\n \nDonald Hardee is a Division Manager for the City of Austin’s Austin Resource Recovery Department. He manages the City’s Household Hazardous Waste Program\, Resource Recovery. Andy Dawson is Assistant Division Manager at City of Austin.\n \nThe URL to click on and join the meeting will be displayed after you RSVP. If you are new to Zoom\, tutorials are available online – example https://www.youtube.com/embed/hIkCmbvAHQQ . Using your camera and microphone is optional for the meeting.

SUMMARY:Craft Night September: DIY Kaleidoscope
DESCRIPTION:Last month\, ACR shift lead\, Ericka\, created an incredible tutorial for their spotlight and we absolutely loved the idea so much\, we had to turn it into a craft night! Using primarily bucket materials\, you’ll learn to create your very own crazy kaleidoscope. There will be plenty of sparkle to go around!\n\n \nThis is an indoor workshop. Masks and social distancing required.\n \n\nAbout Craft Night:\nFalling on the 4th Thursday of each month\, Craft Night is a long held tradition led by two of ACR’s dedicated core volunteers. Craft Night is not only an opportunity to celebrate the pure joy of making things\, but is also an excellent chance to explore the rich offerings of ACR’s wonderful bucket section. Your admission fee of $5 will entitle you to fill a bucket with items from our bucket section that can be used for that evening’s project (along with whatever else happens to tickle your fancy)! Pack it to the brim if you’d like to get every bit of your $5 worth! Your instructors will organize a project for each class and after walking you through the framework\, will turn you loose to gather items for your project so you can commence to crafting. We’ll provide tools and any specialty items you might need to complete the project.\nCraft night is appropriate for ages 12 and up. Minors must be accompanied by an adult and each person is required to purchase a ticket.

SUMMARY:Coffee & Conversation: Exploring Climate Courage
DESCRIPTION:Join presenter Ed George as he explores Andreas Karelas’ new book Climate Courage. The book tells stories of individuals and groups who refuse to be discouraged by all the ominous climate change news\, and who have gotten busy and taken action. Brave office holders support planet-friendly laws. Community activists raise up support for solar workforce job training. A network of churches commits to switch to 100% wind power. Climate Courage is a mosaic of these and other heartening tales. There is much that’s already going on in the world. You will see ideas for action; maybe they will spark ideas of your own.\n\n \nEdward V. George is retired from teaching and research in classical languages at Texas Tech University. He has been a Citizens’ Climate Lobby volunteer for four years. He and his wife Cecilia tend a xeriscaped yard and harvest rainwater with a 1\,000-gallon tank. They belong to Covenant Presbyterian Church\, Lubbock\, a PCUSA certified Earth Care Congregation.\n\n \nEVENT FORMAT:\nOur presenter will speak for 15 to 20 minutes\, then we’ll have an informal Q&A session and discussion for the remainder of the event. This event is held online on Zoom.\n\n \nHOW TO CONNECT:\nPlease RSVP on Eventbrite to receive the Zoom access information:\nhttps://www.eventbrite.com/…/coffee-conversation…\n\n \nSome of our past Coffee and Conversation topics have included:\n– Carbon Footprints for Business\n– Regenerative Ranching in Texas\n– Latino & Spanish-Speaking Climate Outreach\n– Austin’s REACH Carbon Pricing Plan\n– Psychology of Climate Change\n– Carbon taxes in other countries\n– Environmental racism\n– Climate legislation in Texas\n– History of Texas weather\n– Renewable energy\n– Infrastructure and climate mitigation\n– The business case for sustainability\n– How to handle difficult conversations about climate change\n\n \nTo stay updated about future events\, join us at cclusa.org/join

SUMMARY:Solar Austin September (virtual) Happy Hour: A Roundtable Discussion with Women in Energy Storage
DESCRIPTION:Join Solar Austin for our monthly happy hours on September 28 and October 26 as we get the latest on energy storage from the industry’s female leaders.\n\nAs we modernize our energy supply sources with solar and renewables\, it’s important to manage it and have it play smoothly with our load demand. That’s why without storage\, solar can never be the promising source of energy needed for a sustainable future! In a similar way\, without the power and leadership of women\, mankind and our planet could simply not exist. This is why for the months of September and October\, Solar Austin’s Happy Hour spotlight will be devoted to both essential elements: Female Leaders in Energy Storage.\n\n \nIn September we’ll begin with the big picture of utility-scale storage\, then honing into residential and distributed generation for our October conversation.\n \n\nJoin us as we explore the really big picture – utility-scale storage – through a roundtable conversation with industry leaders. Our speakers will help explain what tools\, activities\, and actions are needed for our large solar facilities to increase their efficiency and resiliency with storage. Storage needs to be quick to respond to spiked grid demands\, and large enough to provide backup in case of emergency. Not only that\, but it also needs to be cost-effective enough to be feasible to develop\, deploy\, and manage over time. It’s an interesting challenge as we must remember\, this is also something pioneering for our planet!\n\n \nWe will be joined by representatives from developers\, manufacturers\, and grid integrators so they can each share their story… not only of their career growth into this space but how their companies ensure a cleaner and stronger grid. It is bound to be a thrilling conversation\, and one not to miss.\n\n \nJoin us on September 28th\, 5:30-7 pm for a drink with Austin’s women in storage. Save the date for our upcoming virtual happy hour to continue the conversation on October 26.\n \n\n**Register via the Eventbrite link to receive zoom information!

SUMMARY:Rally to Support Austin Climate Equity Plan
DESCRIPTION:The Austin Climate Equity Plan is coming up for a vote at City Council on September 30. The plan includes a new goal of reducing local climate pollution to net-zero by 2040\, with a strong emphasis on cutting emissions by 2030. Equity – as well as emissions reductions – is at the core of this plan. The goals and strategies in the plan are designed to help counter racist and inequitable policies that have left communities of color in Austin often with fewer resources and worse environmental burdens.\n\n \nThe plan was created by a diverse group of community members\, with guidance from the Office of Sustainability and the Equity Office. Join us to celebrate this exciting new plan and build momentum for implementing it without delay. The climate crisis is upon us and we can’t afford to wait for action.\n\n \n**MASKS REQUIRED**\n**SOCIAL DISTANCING REQUIRED AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE*

SUMMARY:Sierra Club Climate Change Committee Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Climate Change Committee Meeting \nJoin us on Zoom! https://zoom.us/j/5133069449\n \n6:30-7:15 or 7:30 – Brent Bellinger\, Ph.D. Blue-green Algae (Cyanotoxins) in Austin\n \nLady Bird Lake is recognized as one of the most important ecological amenities to the Austin region. Unfortunately\, in 2019 a number of dogs became sick and passed away after swimming in the water body and being exposed to toxic cyanobacteria mats. Thereafter and continuing in 2020 and 2021\, we have monitored the presence of toxins in the algal mats that developed in the summer\, and the water quality\, hydrology\, and temperatures associated with the proliferations. In 2021\, we also initiated a pilot program toward mitigating the growth of potentially toxic cyanobacteria by working to cap-and-bury sediment phosphorus\, thereby making it unavailable to the benthic cyanobacteria for growth. This webinar summarizes our findings and makes inferences about the conditions that have given rise to the blooms in the reservoir and hypothesizes as to what has changed in the reservoir in recent years to have potentially changed ecosystem conditions that now supports toxic cyanobacteria.\n \nBio – I have been a senior scientist with the City of Austin’s Watershed Protection Department for about 7.5 years. My research looks at ecological structure\, function\, and condition\, the influence of stressors on ecological integrity\, and adaptive management\, mitigation\, and restoration options to ensure the highest water quality available to the local communities. I received by bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point and my Ph.D. from Michigan Technological University. After graduation\, I held post-doctoral appointments with the University of Florida/South Florida Water Management District and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.\n \n7:15-8:00 Climate Change Committee Meeting – Discuss Action Teams and allow people to sign up to continue the work to stop climate change\, an imperative if we want our current civilization to survive. We’ve formed Action Teams on Austin Energy\, the Permian Pipeline\, Rio Grande Valley Support\, Carbon Fee & Dividend\, People Power\, Data Entry\, and Presentations and more. We have identified additional action teams we’d like to form\, including Transportation\, Climate Justice\, Partner Organizations\, School Education\, and Social Media. Whether you have only minutes a month or hours a day\, join us to build a mass movement to stop climate change. Or join another group fighting this vital cause.

The timeless charm of traditional Indian textile featuring embroideries\, weaving and luxurious silk is enchanting. These saris have seen countess happy times and innumerable celebration. Too fragile to wear\, we will give them another life by repurposing them into hair accessories that can be worn on many occasions.\n\n \nAbout the Instructor:\nI am Preeti Agrawal\, a craft blogger and watercolorist. In my work\, I am concerned with experiments that combine old and new. I am drawn to the modern craft sensibility but at the same time the traditional arts call to me. I love the interplay of the two as I adjust traditional arts to new mediums and materials.\n\n \nA concern for the environment and a reverence for nature pervades my daily life and my work: I save fabric\, remnants\, beads and the castaways of modern living and incorporate them in my work. Making things by hand gives me joy\, up cycling\, salvaging and repurposing materials gives me joy\, as a result my crafting world is the perfect marriage of two!

SUMMARY:Appointments Project Austin Overview
DESCRIPTION:The Appointments Project serves as a talent bank\, advisor and advocate for women seeking opportunities to lead their communities and works to attract diverse applicants for appointed positions on boards and commissions. The award-winning approach guides women through the process of applying for these positions and suggests applicants for appointment.\n  \nThis free overview will be conducted via webinar and allow Austin women to learn about leadership opportunities and guide them through the process of applying for these positions.\n  \nAbout The Appointments Project \nUnited WE tackles gender inequality on civic boards and commissions through its acclaimed Appointments Project® – the only program in the country that helps women get appointed to civic boards and commissions at the city\, county and state level.\n\nThe Appointments Project is a research-based program developed to increase the number of women serving on civic boards and commissions by providing resources and simplifying the process. The Appointments Project accelerates women’s power and influence by increasing their civic participation and is the only program helping expand civic appointments for all women at the local level.\n\nCivic boards and commissions make decisions about a wide range of issues like roads\, water\, and zoning to public health and elections—many times without a single woman at the table. The Appointments Project is dismantling the barriers that hold women back\, fast tracking women\, and calling local communities to action.\n  \nHow It Works \nThe Appointments Project® makes it easy for women to serve and for elected officials to appoint them. The Appointments Project serves as a talent bank\, advisor\, and advocate for women seeking opportunities to lead their communities and for communities seeking to increase diversity in civic leadership. United WE works to understand the unique culture of each community and the diverse populations they serve. We work with elected leadership to identify willing partner organizations to help establish credibility\, and encourage diverse participation in the Appointments Project. By registering for the Appointments Project\, candidates receive a toolkit of resources that serve as a roadmap for their civic leadership journey.\n  \nHow to Participate  \nPublic training events are planned for October 7\, 2021\, at 12pm CST and October 29th\, 2021\, at 12pm CST. “We encourage and invite everyone to learn more and join us in unlocking women’s potential for civic leadership\,” said Mayor Pro Tem Harper-Madison and Council Member Alter.

SUMMARY:Undoing White Supremacy October Unlearning Circle
DESCRIPTION:October’s UWSA Unlearning Circle will explore the People’s Institute principle: Maintaining Accountability. \nOrganizing with integrity requires that we be accountable to the communities struggling with racist oppression. \nConversations about accountability among white people usually begin and end with a focus on individual accountability. They center holding each other accountable.\n \nTaking a page from our Black elders at the People’s Institute\, however\, our conversation will focus on accountability within the framework of organizing. Together we will identify our organizing communities. We will explore how accountability demands that our organizing communities build principled relationships with those who share our anti-racist values. Relationships that uplift the humanity of all of us. We will share history\, strategies\, and challenges in being accountable\, as a community\, to communities who struggle with racist oppression. We will consider how accountable relationships have provided a foundation for community organizing power.\n \nUnlearning Circle Resource: \n*** People’s Institute for Survival and Beyond – Antiracist Principles https://www.pisab.org/our-principles/ \nMore recommended resources will be posted here soon \nUWSA’s first Unlearning Circle in the winter of 2017 was created as a place for white people to do the work of reflection and community self-education. As we continue to gather to critically examine our own participation in cultures of dominance\, we build our capacity to show up as individuals and as a city-wide community network for Black\, Indigenous and people of color-led anti-racist efforts in a positive and accountable way. The Unlearning Circles are an opportunity for white identifying people to explore white supremacy culture and our role and responsibilities in undoing racism. We welcome and recognize the gift of the presence of any People of Color who choose to join us.
