DESCRIPTION:From AIA Austin (American Institute of Architects) Committee on the Enviornment –\nJoin us for our monthly meeting! This month we’re talking about materials and building impact! \nOur special guest\, Dirk Kestner\, Director of Sustainable Design with Walter P. Moore in Austin and member of the LEED Materials and Resources Technical Advisory Group for USGBC\, will be teaching us about Life Cycle Assessments (LCA’s). \nAn LCA is a tool that allows architects and other building professionals to understand the energy use and other environmental impacts associated with all life cycle phases of the building: raw material procurement\, manufacturing\, construction\, operation and decommissioning. These Assessments have recently been accepted into LEED’s credit system and have been an integral part of the Living Building Challenge since its inception. \nAn LCA is the cradle-to-grave quantification of potential environmental impacts of products or services. LCA removes the guesswork; one can assess buildings to understand their environmental “hot spots” and identify greener alternatives. Commonly reported impact metrics include global warming (“carbon footprint”)\, acidification (“acid rain”)\, eutrophication (“algal bloom”)\, photochemical oxidant creation (“summer smog”) and ozone depletion (“the ozone hole”). \nPlease bring an appetite for learning\, discussion\, and yummy treats! Living Springs\, in collaboration with Splash! will feature Wildlands and A Reflecting Pool. \nWildlands showcases Austin’s water quality protection lands that Austin voters purchased through open space bonds to protect the aquifer. Learn about the diversity\, history and significance of these protected lands. \nA Reflecting Pool recounts Barton’s social history in the 50-year period from 1912-1962 through the memories of those who lived it. This documentary showcases wonderful archival photos\, film and original historic re-creations. The story follows the memories of swimmers such as John Henry Faulk exploring the little-known history of Barton Springs before\, during and after the time of racial segregation in Austin. \nA free popsicle from Good Pop for the first 200 people to stop in and see us. \nCity of Austin environmental educators and local environmental groups will be on hand before the screening to talk about how you can get involved in community efforts to support the Springs\, creeks and aquifer through volunteering and internships. \nWe will gather at 7:30 p.m. near the big tree at the south entrance\, Azie Morton Road (formerly Robert E. The goal for this revamp is to create an open and flexible space that can be used any day by the public and periodically for events\, including improvements such as: flexible lawn space\, multiple water access points\, trail restorations and an amphitheater. \nFree Lick Ice Cream will be offered on a first come\, first served basis\, so come out early to beat the heat and the lines! \nAbout the site:\nThe Seaholm Intake facility is an iconic Art Deco design and once was the pump house for the Seaholm Power Plant. The Seaholm Power Plant represents a strong civic presence in the cityscape of downtown Austin and showcases a unique period of American Art Deco municipal architecture and Public Works engineering. Seaholm operated as a power plant until 1989. In 1996\, Austin City Council authorized the decommissioning of the plant and all the associated buildings\, in preparation for future adaptive re-use. Now imagine 100 years into the future with four times as many Austinites and a much warmer climate. What will our lakes look like then? Where will our water come from? To answer this question\, the City of Austin and Austin Water\, working with a council-appointed Task Force\, are developing a 100-year water plan that considers our growth and the changing climate to identify what Austin needs to do over the next 100 years to meet our water needs. This presentation will discuss the planning process\, what the future holds\, and what we can do now to ensure we have the water resources we need for the future to meet the needs of our growing city and preserve our environment. \nSpeaker Bio:\nRobert Mace is the Deputy Executive Director of The Meadows Center for Water and the Environment and a Professor of Practice in the Department of Geography at Texas State University. Robert has over 30 years of experience in hydrology\, hydrogeology\, stakeholder processes\, and water policy\, mostly in Texas. Robert has a B.S. in Geophysics and an M.S. in Hydrology from the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology and a Ph.D. in Hydrogeology from The University of Texas at Austin.

DESCRIPTION:From the Natural Gardener –\nTuesday\, September 11th at 10am – Neil Schmidt covers “Fermented Veggies”.   \nPeople have been fermenting vegetables for thousands of years.  Wild raw fermentation is not as scary as you might think.  The trick is to keep it submerged in the brine which virtually eliminates any contamination risk. The process of fermentation helps preserve the vegetables for later use.  It also helps to predigest the veggies allowing you to better absorb the nutrients.  The bacteria that ferments the veggies are a powerful pro-biotic for our digestive system.  Homemade raw fermented veggies offer more nutrients than cooked and a myriad of cultured probiotic bacteria for optimal gut health. \nYou can use way more than just cabbage for kraut or cucumbers for pickles; although these are still some of my favorites.  Fermented peppers for salsa\, pickled red onions\, pickled garlic and Escabeche are all amazing options but are just the tip of the iceberg!  Fermentation offers endless variety of flavors and adds a great crisp\, sour\, crunch to any meal.
