SUMMARY:Free Class: Plant Propagation
DESCRIPTION:From the Natural Gardener –\nTuesday\, May 8th at 10am – “Plant Propagation” with Neil Schmidt.   \nIt is simple and easy to propagate plants.  Some of the most common ways plants are propagated or multiplied are by growing seeds\, root division and stem cuttings.  Neil will discuss which process is most appropriate for specific species.  Do you have a favorite plant you want to share with friends or one you just can’t find anywhere to get more?  Dividing plants and taking cuttings allow you to greatly increase the number of plants you have so they can be shared\, sold or planted in the landscape.  You never knew it could be so simple! \nNeil has experience working as Propagation Specialist for the Ladybird Johnson Wildflower Center and the Info Desk at The Natural Gardener.  Let him get you started on your project!

SUMMARY:Free Class: Urban Permaculture for Austinites
DESCRIPTION:From the Natural Gardener –\nSaturday\, May 12th at 10am – Leah Churner of Delta Dawn Gardens (deltadawngardens.com) presents “Urban Permaculture for Austinites.” \nPermaculture is a design philosophy that borrows the logic of natural systems to create spaces that are self-sustaining\, functional\, and beautiful\, no matter the size. Rather than a list of techniques\, permaculture is a framework for pulling techniques together. If you’ve tried your hand at organic gardening\, rainwater harvesting\, composting\, soil building\, or supporting pollinators\, you’re already on your way to the permaculture mindset! The magic comes in fitting all of these ecological puzzle pieces together into a cohesive whole. \nLeah will introduce you to the concepts of stacking\, chunking\, guilds\, and earthworks\, and present some projects you can try at home here in Austin\, whether you have a big yard\, a small yard\, or no yard at all. Leah is a landscape designer and the host of HOTHOUSE\, a new podcast about gardening\, ecology\, and nature (www.hothousepodcast.com).

SUMMARY:Free Class: How to Get Life into Your Soil
DESCRIPTION:From the Natural Gardener –\nSaturday\, May 19th at 10am – Betsy Ross of Sustainable Growth Texas (sustainablegrowthtexas.com) presents “The Benefits of Getting Carbon and Then Life in Your Soil.”  \nBetsy has been a certified Soil Foodweb Advisor since 2004\, and is one of our region’s authorities in compost tea and soil biology (soilfoodweb.com). With her family\, she operates a 530-acre ranch (rossfarm.com) in Williamson County. “Betsy Ross Grass-fed Beef” is sold through Peoples Pharmacy in Austin and on the farm. She is also the CEO and a founding partner in Sustainable Growth Texas\, manufacturing and applying biologically active compost tea/extract to pastures\, prairies\, orchards\, lawns\, revegetation sites\, and farms. \nBetsy thinks that lack of carbon in our soils is the greatest limiting factor of sustainability and will focus on how to build soil faster than we use it up. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn about the importance of life in our soil\, whether you have a suburban home or acres in the country.
