DESCRIPTION:From the Sustainable Food Center –\nIf you are a new gardener or new to gardening in Central Texas\, and if you are looking for a holistic introduction to organic food growing\, then this Sustainable Food Center class is just for you. Taught by expert food gardeners\, this 3-part series combines hands-on activities and classroom discussion to provide participants with the knowledge and skills needed to start and maintain an organic and sustainable food garden. Whether you hope to garden in a yard\, on a balcony\, or at a community garden\, this class series will give you a strong foundation for growing your own food. \nClass 1: On day one\, participants learn what it means to garden organically. You also learn about the sunlight and soil needs of vegetable gardens\, and you work together to weed\, amend and plant one of the beds in SFC’s Teaching Garden. \nClass 2: On day two\, participants learn all about watering\, from the basics of watering seeds and transplants to water conservation. Participants also develop their observation skills by taking a guided tour through the Teaching Garden and the adjacent community garden. \nClass 3: Day three is devoted to composting and to organic pest and disease management. We begin with a bug hunt then continue with a discussion of environmentally-friendly ways to control pests and diseases. During the second part of class\, participants enjoy a hands-on lesson in building and tending compost systems. \nParticipants also take home a 45-page manual produced by SFC and designed specifically for Central Texas food growers. DESCRIPTION:From Public Citizen Texas – \nJoin us for a town hall discussion with Seattle Councilmember Teresa Mosqueda on the Democracy Voucher program. \nThe Democracy Voucher program was designed to encourage a more diverse pool of candidates for elected office and ensure everyone has the opportunity to have his or her voice heard\, not just the wealthy and political elite. \nAdopted by Seattle in 2015 and put into practice in 2017\, the voucher program has resulted in a marked change in the composition of who is contributing to city campaigns in Seattle. The voucher program has made the universe of donors to political campaigns more diverse and more balanced with regard to geography\, gender and economic status. \nIn addition\, the program has served to empower candidates who may have been superbly qualified in every way except having easy access to wealthy donors – like Councilwoman Mosqueda. \nThe City of Austin is currently reviewing a Democracy Voucher program proposal and it could be at item on the November ballot.

DESCRIPTION:From the Sierra Club –\nWe will be discussing the biography of John Muir who started the Sierra Club and was a fascinating figure in environmental history. The book I read was “A Passion for Nature The Life of John Muir” by Donald Worster. You are welcome to read any biography on John Muir if you’d like. \nHere’s an excerpt from Amazon.com about this book: \n“In Donald Worster’s magisterial biography\, John Muir’s “special self” is fully explored as is his extraordinary ability\, then and now\, to get others to see the sacred beauty of the natural world. A Passion for Nature is the most complete account of the great conservationist and founder of the Sierra Club ever written. It is the first to be based on Muir’s full private correspondence and to meet modern scholarly standards. Yet it is also full of rich detail and personal anecdote\, uncovering the complex inner life behind the legend of the solitary mountain man.” \nOur next book for March is “Cadillac Desert: The American West and its Disappearing Water” by Marc Reisner\, which has been a great read to learn about how we have engineered our water ways to allow us to grow large metropolises in the desert (Las Angeles\, Phoenix etc) and all of the crazy bureaucracy behind it. (There’s also a 4 part doc series on youtube about the book as well) \nThen April’s book is a lighter read called “Second Nature” by Michael Pollan. It’s a book on gardening and our place in the natural world. It’s very well reviewed. He’s a great author and I’ve read most of his books and he’s never let me down. Taught by expert food gardeners\, this 3-part series combines hands-on activities and classroom discussion to provide participants with the knowledge and skills needed to start and maintain an organic and sustainable food garden. Whether you hope to garden in a yard\, on a balcony\, or at a community garden\, this class series will give you a strong foundation for growing your own food. \nClass 1: On day one\, participants learn what it means to garden organically. You also learn about the sunlight and soil needs of vegetable gardens\, and you work together to weed\, amend and plant one of the beds in SFC’s Teaching Garden. \nClass 2: On day two\, participants learn all about watering\, from the basics of watering seeds and transplants to water conservation. Participants also develop their observation skills by taking a guided tour through the Teaching Garden and the adjacent community garden. \nClass 3: Day three is devoted to composting and to organic pest and disease management. We begin with a bug hunt then continue with a discussion of environmentally-friendly ways to control pests and diseases. During the second part of class\, participants enjoy a hands-on lesson in building and tending compost systems. \nParticipants also take home a 45-page manual produced by SFC and designed specifically for Central Texas food growers. DESCRIPTION:From Solar Austin –\nThe Pedernales Electric Cooperative (PEC) is going big with community solar. By the end of 2018\, the co-op expects to have 15 MW online at five sites throughout its service territory. These local solar installations will be used to provide power to participating co-op members (customers) at a set rate. This is great news for customers who don’t have access to on-site solar—whether it’s because they can’t afford it\, don’t own their own homes\, or don’t have roof or are on land that isn’t suited for solar. And since participating co-op members will reduce their electric bills compared to the regular PEC rates\, it’s no wonder that over 1\,000 members signed up in the first day that the program opened for subscriptions in December. If you’re a PEC member\, you can sign up here <https://www.pec.coop/your-service/solar-options/cooperative-solar-rate/>. \nPEC is investing in low cost solar to reduce more expensive power purchases from the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA)\, which relies heavily on the coal-fired Fayette power plant. DESCRIPTION:From the Sustainable Food Center –\nIf you are a new gardener or new to gardening in Central Texas\, and if you are looking for a holistic introduction to organic food growing\, then this Sustainable Food Center class is just for you. Taught by expert food gardeners\, this 3-part series combines hands-on activities and classroom discussion to provide participants with the knowledge and skills needed to start and maintain an organic and sustainable food garden. Whether you hope to garden in a yard\, on a balcony\, or at a community garden\, this class series will give you a strong foundation for growing your own food. \nClass 1: On day one\, participants learn what it means to garden organically. You also learn about the sunlight and soil needs of vegetable gardens\, and you work together to weed\, amend and plant one of the beds in SFC’s Teaching Garden. \nClass 2: On day two\, participants learn all about watering\, from the basics of watering seeds and transplants to water conservation. Participants also develop their observation skills by taking a guided tour through the Teaching Garden and the adjacent community garden. \nClass 3: Day three is devoted to composting and to organic pest and disease management. We begin with a bug hunt then continue with a discussion of environmentally-friendly ways to control pests and diseases. During the second part of class\, participants enjoy a hands-on lesson in building and tending compost systems. \nParticipants also take home a 45-page manual produced by SFC and designed specifically for Central Texas food growers.
