SUMMARY:Bird Walk
DESCRIPTION:Join Travis Audubon and The Trail Conservancy to find birds and observe their behavior on the new section of the Butler Trail\, the Holly Trailhead\, historically part of the decommissioned Holly Power Plant at Festival Beach. Recently planted native trees\, shrubs\, wildflowers\, and natural spring water dominate the landscape and provide excellent habitats for many different species of birds. As TTC restores this new section of the trail\, we will see a change of birds\, so you’ll want to come on this monthly walk.\n \n\nThis bird walk is ideal for beginners\, but all levels are welcome. We have binoculars to lend to anyone that doesn’t have a pair. Our walk will total 1-2 miles in about 3 hours\, making our way through the Holly Trail and adjacent to Lady Bird Lake to listen to and look for resident birds\, migrants\, and flyovers. The terrain is mostly flat (dissolved gravel trail and sidewalks) and there is ADA accessibility at the Holly Trail Overlook.  In winter\, we will take a stop at the Holly Trail overlook section of the trail a bit to watch the waterfowl.\n \n\nRegistration is required and is limited to 10 participants. DESCRIPTION:Join the UMLAUF Sculpture Garden and Museum\, the City of Austin Parks and Recreation Department\, and Page/ architecture firm\, for the unveiling of the Historic Preservation\, Expansion and Unification Plan on Wednesday\, May 29 at 5:30 p.m. at 605 Azie Morton Rd. This event is free and open to the public. Please RSVP for the event.\n \n\nThe plan is the vital first step for the Austin art institution to improve access and expand use of the 5.86-acre sculpture garden\, museum and grounds\, while preserving and incorporating the adjacent 1.93-acre site that includes the historic home of Angeline and Charles Umlauf\, their private sculpture garden\, and the artist’s studio.\n \n\nThe plan recommends the preservation and activation of the historic Umlauf home and studio for public access\, more gathering and programmatic space\, and strategies to display additional art that is currently in storage. The plan also recommends the implementation of sustainable practices and innovative stormwater management strategies.\n \n\nThe plan began in summer 2023 with community engagement and site assessment followed by a feedback period for the public to respond to different conceptual ideas\, which were incorporated into the plan.\n \n\nThe UMLAUF Sculpture Garden and Museum was made possible through the Umlaufs’ 1985 donation of their personal residence\, art studio\, seven acres and more than 150 sculptures to the City of Austin for use as an art museum\, which opened to the public on adjacent land in 1991.\n \n\nMore information on the planning process can be found at UmlaufSculpture.org/VisionPlan.

DESCRIPTION:This May\, some of Austin’s favorite Latina acts will deliver on talent and culture for a free Latinapalooza show on Sunday\, May 26 from 12 noon to 5 p.m. at the Lampkin Pavilion in Rosewood Park\, 1182 North Pleasant Valley Rd.\, behind the ballfields and adjacent to New York Ave. The show will feature emerging and long-time performances by Bidi Bidi Banda\, Llamativa\, Mariachi Las Coronelas\, The Tiarras and Patricia Vonne.\n\n \n12 Noon – Bidi Bidi Banda: Selena tribute band fronted by Stephanie Bergara and her Tejano musicians.\n1 p.m. – Llamativa:  An 8 piece all female Chicanx band from San Antonio that pushes the boundaries of Latin genre with Cumbia\, Salsa\, Bolero\, Chacha and Tejano influences.\n2 p.m. – Mariachi Las Coronelas: a modern all-female mariachi ensemble\, famously known for traditional mariachi boleros\, rancheras\, original music and their high energy performances.\n3 p.m. – The Tiarras: Three powerhouse Tejana sisters\, represent the next generation of Latina music. Their mission-driven eclectic sound and anthemic lyrics celebrate unity\, empowerment\, inclusion and a love of community.\n4 p.m. – Patricia Vonne: A Tex –Mex spitfire with a rock n roll heart who plays a border crossing\, bilingual mix of flamenco and Mexican influences with all American rock n roll.\n \nLatinapalooza is Austin’s premiere Latina/Hispanic music showcase that connects culture and community. This community show is a collaboration between the artists sponsored by City of Austin Cultural Arts Division and Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center.\n \n\nAlmost unconsciously\, Austin’s Eastside is this city’s heart center. Even with updated facades and a new crop of residents\, its cultural origin magnetizes new arrivals and tourists and is still home to so many who defined its history. Celebrating that history and energy are some of Austin’s most talented and beloved Latina musicians at this free\, family-friendly\, outdoor event.\n \n\nLatinapalooza was founded by singer/songwriter\, actress and entrepreneur Patricia Vonne\, and it has been an official SXSW showcase for the past three years. In addition to being part of SXSW\, this event is now a free showcase offered in May celebrating Latin music and culture with an all female Latina lineup performing everything from mariachi\, pop\, Tejano to flamenco roots rock.\n \n\n“There’s a sisterhood of musicians in Austin that have put the city on an international map\, but also spotlights Austin’s specific cultural heritage. DESCRIPTION:Throughout the year\, TEMPO on the Trail artist Juliet Whitsett will collaborate with artists and organizations to integrate eco-focused art installations into her 2024-2025 Really Small Museum – Eco (RSME) project\, situated at the Holly Trail.\n \n\nThrough a series of creative exercises\, we will explore memories attached to plants to create a collection of shared wisdom about the healing power of plants. Participants will contribute to the creation of a zine that will be produced by the artist later this year and will receive a complimentary custom herbal tea blend to take home.\n \n\nThis event coincides with Hija de flores / Daughter of flowers\, an installation by local artist Paloma Mayorga composed of floral DNA representations that investigate the concept of botanical wisdom\, or the practice of slowly unearthing bits of inherited knowledge that have been passed down generations of women as tools for healing and survival.\n \n\nPaloma Mayorga is an interdisciplinary artist and independent curator born and based in Austin\, TX. Working across photography\, video\, performance\, and installation\, Mayorga often uses her own body as medium to explore movement\, place\, and cultural identity in relation to landscape and ancestral uses of plants.\n \n\nThis event is part of the 2024-2025 Really Small Museum – Eco (RSME) TEMPO on the Trail in partnership with The Trail Conservancy.

This tight-knit post-war neighborhood was home to some of the twentieth century’s most significant Black Austinites\, including those of Tuskegee Airman Norman Scales\, former Huston-Tillotson president Dr. John Q. Pleasant Valley Rd. The building is located within Rosewood Neighborhood Park near the Delores Duffie Recreation Center. There is limited parking next to the building\, and more parking at the main Delores Duffie building on North Pleasant Valley\, and also the Henry G. Madison Cabin at Chestnut and Rosewood Ave.\n \nHave an item that needs fixing? Bring it to the next Fix-It Clinic on May 18 at the Carver Branch Library! Coaches will help you fix broken electronics\, household appliances\, clothing\, bikes\, jewelry and more. These clinics are a great way to learn and have an item fixed at the same time. Get your free ticket before they’re gone.\n\n \nCan’t make it? Take advantage of our drop-off option! Drop off your broken item at the Carver Branch Library\, May 10-16\, and our volunteers will try to fix it for you.
