SUMMARY:Holding Space Through Food: Black Stories from Soil to Stove
DESCRIPTION:A panel exploring Black foodways in Austin\,centering stories of land\, labor\, culture\, and community through the lived experiences.\n\n\n\nAs part of the Holding Spaces exhibition\, Holding Space Through Food: Black Stories from Soil to Stove is a moderated\, story-forward conversation centering Black foodways in Austin. \nThis panel explores how food\, land\, labor\, and brick-and-mortar spaces intersect in the lives of Black chefs\, entrepreneurs\, growers\, and cultural workers. Panelists will reflect on their personal pathways into food\, the emotional and cultural labor behind hospitality\, and what it means to create and sustain food-centered spaces amid displacement\, rising costs\, and shifting neighborhoods. \nRather than focusing on culinary trends\, this conversation prioritizes lived experience—honoring food as memory\, practice\, resistance\, and care. The program invites the audience into a shared dialogue about nourishment\, legacy\, and the ways Black communities continue to hold space through food. \nPanelists: \nLarissa Davila \nExecutive Director\, Economic Growth Business Incubator (EGBI)\nLarissa Davila is a business development expert with deep experience supporting entrepreneurs of color. As Executive Director of EGBI\, she works closely with food-based businesses navigating sustainability\, growth\, and community impact\, with a focus on equitable access to resources and long-term viability. \nJahmaal Dumes \nCoFounder\, CaJJun Eats\nJahmaal Dumes is a Beaumont\, Texas native and business owner with a Bachelor’s degree in Business from Southwestern University. Her work reflects the intersection of flavor\, storytelling\, and community—using food as a way to build connection and celebrate Black creativity. \nVirginia Baldwin \nFounder & Owner\, Homestead Gristmill\nVirginia Baldwin is the founder of Homestead Gristmill\, a Black-owned stone mill focused on heritage grains and sustainable food systems. Her work reconnects food to land\, history\, and ancestral practices\, emphasizing intentional sourcing and cultural continuity. \nDonnie Johnson Sackey \nAssociate Professor & Associate Chair of Rhetoric and Writing\, The University of Texas at Austin\nDonnie Johnson Sackey is a scholar whose work examines Black cultural expression\, place-making\, and community narratives. SUMMARY:Don Baylor Neighborhood Park Renaming And Historical Marker Unveiling
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a Renaming Ceremony and Historical Marker Unveiling for Don Baylor Neighborhood Park! \nLast year\, my team and I led the city council in adopting an ordinance renaming Westenfield Neighborhood Park after the late Don Baylor\, a Clarksville native who overcame segregation to become a baseball legend. Join us for a ceremonial unveiling of the park’s new historical marker! A reception at Sweet Home Missionary Baptist Church will follow. \n\nDon Baylor (1949–2017) grew up in Clarksville\, a historic Texas Freedom Community near this park. Despite segregation preventing him from playing in the park as a child\, Baylor broke barriers throughout his life. He was among the first Black students to integrate O. Henry Middle School and later attended Austin High School. Drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in 1967\, Baylor became one of the first African American players signed directly out of high school in Texas. His Major League Baseball career spanned 19 seasons\, earning him the American League’s Most Valuable Player award in 1979 and a World Series championship in 1987. Baylor later managed the Colorado Rockies and Chicago Cubs\, earning Manager of the Year honors in 1995. \nBeyond the field\, Baylor was a tireless advocate for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and a lifelong member of Sweet Home Missionary Baptist Church. His induction into multiple sports halls of fame and burial at the Texas State Cemetery reflect his enduring impact on Texas and the nation. \nFunding for the interpretive marker came from District 10\, Austin Parks Foundation\, and the Baylor family.
