SUMMARY:Better World Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Feeling disconnected or overwhelmed and wondering what to do about it? This monthly book club is for people to engage with works on morality\, philosophy\, economics\, sustainability\, and degrowth among others. The goal is to better understand the world and our role in changing it. \nEach month\, I’ll also spotlight a local nonprofit and volunteer opportunity to help connect our conversations with real-world actions. The idea is that not everyone will be passionate about every topic but everyone will hopefully be passionate about some topic. \nWe will be meeting on the 4th Thursday @anisdayandnight at 7pm! The wonderful @pricklypearbookbus which is on-site will have books stocked to buy in person or online! \nI truly believe that in the fight for a better world\, every thoughtful conversation and every small act matters and this my step towards change\, I hope you join me! \nOur first book on Sept 25th will be The Message by Ta-Nehisi Coates. Words are powerful and this book explores the power of stories and how they shape reality through three intertwining essays. \nYou can be a part of the discussions if you’ve read the whole book\, a couple of pages or none at all but are simply interested in the topic. @pricklypearbookbus will have copies available online and in person! They are kind enough to give a discount if you buy through them! ‍↕️ \nI will also have journalists and poets come to share their real life experiences of the importance of writing and telling stories that matter! Amy Stansbury from The Austin Common will be one of our guest speakers.

SUMMARY:Groasis Splash!
DESCRIPTION:Come cool off with us at Groasis Splash! With your help\, we’ll wash and prep our Groasis Waterboxxes for the new planting season. These innovative planting devices capture rain and condensation\, then slowly release it to young trees—helping them survive the Central Texas heat while using very little water. \nBy giving them a good clean\, you’ll be making sure they’re ready to keep supporting the Central Texas Floodplain Reforestation Program and the next generation of trees. \nExpect a fun few hours of suds\, splashes\, and good vibes—we’ll have snacks to keep you fueled and tunes to keep the energy high. Think of it as one last chance to soak up Austin’s “bonus summer” before the cooler weather rolls in. \nBe sure to wear clothes and shoes you don’t mind getting wet and/or a little dirty. \nYou can sign up for the morning session (9am to noon) or the afternoon session (1pm to 4pm).

SUMMARY:Issues & Eggs: Intersection of Behavioral Health and Public Safety
DESCRIPTION:Join the Downtown Austin Alliance on October 7 from 7:30 AM to 9 AM for a continued conversation on mental health and public safety in our community. Since the launch of Travis County’s Mental Health Diversion Pilot\, significant work has been underway to connect individuals in crisis to appropriate care rather than cycling them through the criminal justice system. \nAt this follow-up event\, we will hear from local leaders and practitioners about the progress made since our initial discussion\, including updates on the pilot’s impact\, lessons learned\, and next steps in the planning for a permanent Mental Health Diversion Center update. Speakers will also explore broader efforts to improve access to mental health resources in Austin and Travis County\, and how these initiatives are shaping safer and healthier outcomes for our community. \nThis conversation is an opportunity to check in on the commitments made earlier this year\, learn about early outcomes\, and engage in what’s next for mental health solutions in Austin.

SUMMARY:"The Librarians" Documentary Screening by the Kozmetsky Center
DESCRIPTION:The Kozmetsky Center is excited to host a screening of “The Librarians” during Banned Books Week. Additionally\, we are honored to have Suzette Baker\, the librarian from Llano\, TX\, who refused to pull books from her shelf to sit down with us for a conversation about her experience and the significant role that public libraries play in exercising the first amendment. Enjoy free food & non-alcoholic beverages paid for by the Kozmetsky Center! Plus\, proceeds from the small ticket fee will go towards Munday Library and improving their collection of physical books. \nAbout the film\nIn Texas\, the Krause List targets 850 books focused on race and LGBTQia+ stories – triggering sweeping book bans across the U.S. at an unprecedented rate. As tensions escalate\, librarians connect the dots from heated school and library board meetings nationwide to lay bare the underpinnings of extremism fueling the censorship efforts. Despite facing harassment\, threats\, and laws aimed at criminalizing their work – the librarians’ rallying cry for freedom to read is a chilling cautionary tale. \nView the trailer here.\nSchedule of events:\n6:30pm – Doors open \n7pm – Film start time (92m) \n8:32pm – Film end time \n8:35pm – A Conversation with Suzette Baker and Dr. David Thomason \n9pm – Event ends
