SUMMARY:Juneteenth Free Your Mind Symposium Day 1
DESCRIPTION:The 2025 Free Your Mind Lecture Series kicks off on Tuesday\, June 10 from 12-1:30pm with a film screening of Juneteenth: Faith & Freedom\, an unscripted documentary that invites viewers into the story of Juneteenth through the eyes of a Black man learning about the holiday from the direct descendants of those liberated. A conversation and Q&A with Ya’ke Smith\, documentary director and Associate Professor of Film at the University of Texas at Austin\, will follow. Learn more about Ya’ke Smith’s work as a filmmaker\, professor\, and activist at exodusfilmworks.com. \nThe Free Your Mind Lecture Series continues at 6pm on Tuesday\, June 10\, with a lecture from Dr. Simone Browne\, Associate Professor in the Department of African and African Diaspora Studies at the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Browne will present her research on the social and ethical implications of heightened digital scrutiny\, both with and without artificial intelligence. She will discuss how these practices are informed by historic methods of monitoring Black life under slavery and the ways artists intervene against them. With a focus on algorithmic harm and tech equity\, Dr. Browne will guide the audience through community-based tactics for enhanced digital safety planning and data protection. \nGame Designer and Small Black Museum Residency alum Temitope Olujobi returns to the Carver Museum to present their latest project\, Hands That Steal From Other Mouths\, on Tuesday\, June 10 from 8-9pm. Combining a teach-in and live video game performance\, Olujobi’s work pursues a creative mission to unify Africans\, on the continent and in the Black American diaspora\, in learning about the collective exploitation and struggle for self-determination.

SUMMARY:Tree ID for Seed Savers at Circle Acres
DESCRIPTION:This is not a volunteer opportunity; it is an educational event. \nHave you been wondering what kind of tree is growing in your yard? Maybe you want to learn a fun new skill? Well\, you’re in luck\, because the Central Texas Seed Savers and TreeFolks are coming to Circle Acres to lead a Tree ID lesson to help you learn a little more about what’s growing around you! \nYou will learn how to identify native trees and how to safely and ethically collect seeds to donate to the TreeFolks Seeds To Trees Native Nursery. \nSpecial thanks to Ecology Action for hosting this event at its Circle Acres Nature Preserve. Parking info is available on their website. \nThe Central Texas Seed Savers is a growing network of people who love seeds with the mission of preventing the extinction of ecologically and culinarily important plants in the Central Texas Region. \nTreeFolks was founded as Austin’s Urban Forestry non-profit in 1989. Since then\, TreeFolks has grown to work with communities throughout Central Texas in community tree planting\, tree giveaways\, education\, and urban-wildland reforestation efforts. Our mission is to empower Central Texans to build stronger communities through planting and caring for trees.

SUMMARY:Austin’s Archives and You: Preserving City & Community Histories
DESCRIPTION:The Austin History Center needs your input! We invite you to join us at the Ruiz Branch Library on June 29th to learn about our work and the Austin’s Archives & You survey. There will be activities so that you can help us decide the direction of our programs\, exhibits\, and spaces. Complete our survey and receive a free coffee mug or a historic map! \nWe will offer light refreshments.  \nAustin Archives and You: Preserving City & Community Histories\nThis year we are celebrating the Austin History Center’s re-opening in the John Henry Faulk Building located at 800 Guadalupe St. as well as the 25 year anniversary of our Community Archives Program. In honor of these milestones\, we are rolling out the Austin Archives & You: Preserving City & Community Histories community engagement campaign. This summer we are conducting public meetings\, workshops\, attending tabling events\, and collecting surveys to help shape the future of our programs\, exhibits\, and spaces. Our work is rooted in community and we’d love to hear your opinions and do what we can to meet your needs! \nAt the end of this community engagement campaign\, we will share out the results of our efforts in a celebratory event held at our new space in the John Henry Faulk Building. Although it will take time\, our goal is to implement changes to our programs\, exhibits\, and spaces based on feedback received at our workshops and from survey results beginning in Fiscal Year 2026.

SUMMARY:Texas Statewide Active Transportation Plan Public Meeting
DESCRIPTION:As our state’s population and economy continue to grow\, TxDOT is developing the Statewide Active Transportation Plan (SATP) to help Texans get to where they want to go more effectively\, efficiently and safely while contributing to a next-generation transportation network. \nWith input from stakeholders and communities across the state\, this plan presents a coordinated\, unified vision for active transportation priorities through 2050 and beyond. The SATP includes human-powered modes like cycling\, walking\, the use of other mobility devices such as wheelchairs\, and smaller electric options such as e-scooters. \nTxDOT is seeking feedback on the proposed actions and steps for implementation of the SATP through a third round of outreach in summer 2025.
