SUMMARY:Seaholm Ice Cream Social
DESCRIPTION:From the Austin Parks Foundation and the Trail Foundation –\nJoin Austin Parks Foundation and The Trail Foundation to explore the potential plans for the historic Seaholm Intake Facility over FREE Lick Ice Cream. The goal for this revamp is to create an open and flexible space that can be used any day by the public and periodically for events\, including improvements such as: flexible lawn space\, multiple water access points\, trail restorations and an amphitheater. \nFree Lick Ice Cream will be offered on a first come\, first served basis\, so come out early to beat the heat and the lines! \nAbout the site:\nThe Seaholm Intake facility is an iconic Art Deco design and once was the pump house for the Seaholm Power Plant. The Seaholm Power Plant represents a strong civic presence in the cityscape of downtown Austin and showcases a unique period of American Art Deco municipal architecture and Public Works engineering. Seaholm operated as a power plant until 1989. In 1996\, Austin City Council authorized the decommissioning of the plant and all the associated buildings\, in preparation for future adaptive re-use. The Seaholm Intake Facility is located on the banks of Lady Bird Lake and the Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail. (seaholmwaterfront.org)

SUMMARY:Happy Hour: Water Forward
DESCRIPTION:From the Save Barton Creek Association –\nPresentation:\nWe all remember how disturbingly low Highland Lakes receded during the last drought. Now imagine 100 years into the future with four times as many Austinites and a much warmer climate. What will our lakes look like then? Where will our water come from? To answer this question\, the City of Austin and Austin Water\, working with a council-appointed Task Force\, are developing a 100-year water plan that considers our growth and the changing climate to identify what Austin needs to do over the next 100 years to meet our water needs. This presentation will discuss the planning process\, what the future holds\, and what we can do now to ensure we have the water resources we need for the future to meet the needs of our growing city and preserve our environment. \nSpeaker Bio:\nRobert Mace is the Deputy Executive Director of The Meadows Center for Water and the Environment and a Professor of Practice in the Department of Geography at Texas State University. Robert has over 30 years of experience in hydrology\, hydrogeology\, stakeholder processes\, and water policy\, mostly in Texas. Robert has a B.S. in Geophysics and an M.S. in Hydrology from the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology and a Ph.D. in Hydrogeology from The University of Texas at Austin.

SUMMARY:Free Class: Fermented Veggies
DESCRIPTION:From the Natural Gardener –\nTuesday\, September 11th at 10am – Neil Schmidt covers “Fermented Veggies”.   \nPeople have been fermenting vegetables for thousands of years.  Wild raw fermentation is not as scary as you might think.  The trick is to keep it submerged in the brine which virtually eliminates any contamination risk. The process of fermentation helps preserve the vegetables for later use.  It also helps to predigest the veggies allowing you to better absorb the nutrients.  The bacteria that ferments the veggies are a powerful pro-biotic for our digestive system.  Homemade raw fermented veggies offer more nutrients than cooked and a myriad of cultured probiotic bacteria for optimal gut health. \nYou can use way more than just cabbage for kraut or cucumbers for pickles; although these are still some of my favorites.  Fermented peppers for salsa\, pickled red onions\, pickled garlic and Escabeche are all amazing options but are just the tip of the iceberg!  Fermentation offers endless variety of flavors and adds a great crisp\, sour\, crunch to any meal.

SUMMARY:Sierra Club Monthly Program: Water In The Next 100 Years
DESCRIPTION:From the Sierra Club –\nHappy Hour /food and beverages (http://www.scholzgarten.com/): 6-7 pm \nSocializing and informal discussions on current events: 6-7 pm \nAnnouncements and program begin at 7 pm \nPROGRAM: Water in the Next 100 Years\, with Sharlene Leurig\, with Environmental Flows Initiative of Texas Living Waters Project\, The Meadows Center for Water and the Environment at Texas State University\, \nThe rivers that flow through our state have always had an important destination: the bays. If they don’t reach the bays\, the estuaries cease to function\, shutting down the “nurseries” that are home to much of our coastal wildlife. That affects the economy. That affects our way of life. That affects you. Between us\, we can ensure that these beautiful rivers always reach their destination. \nSharlene holds a Master in City Planning\, Environmental Policy and Planning from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology\, and a BA in Physics and English from Washington University in St. Louis. In her spare time\, Sharlene writes about the springs of Texas on her blog Hell’s Oasis. She is an avid swimmer\, kayaker\, hiker and lover of all things wild. \nConsider biking\, carpooling\, or taking Cap Metro (http://www.capmetro.org/planner) to the meeting. Free parking is available after 6pm on San Jacinto and nearby streets.

SUMMARY:Free Class: Infused Liquor And Shrub Making
DESCRIPTION:From the Natural Gardener –\nTuesday\, September 18th at 10am – Neil Schmidt presents “Infused Liquor and Shrub Making”.   \nOne way to use this year’s harvest of herbs\, fruits and veggies is to create amazing combinations to infuse flavor into liquor.  Infusing alcohol is very easy and takes very little time on your part\, taking at least a few weeks but mostly sitting in the cabinet.  These then can be used to make incredible top shelf cocktails of almost any flavor. \nHow does a Habanero-Bacon infused vodka for an out-of-sight Bloody-Mary sound!  Or Cucumber-Mint vodka for Mojitos or Fresh Ginger infused vodka for a Moscow Mule with a real Kick!  And this is just the beginning of what you can do!  Another way to add flavor to cocktails is “Shrubs” a colonial era mixture of herbs\, fruit and vinegars.  This sweet\, sour and tart concoction adds amazing depth to cocktails as well as non-alcoholic drinks. Let’s use our harvest to make new and interesting things!  Come join us!

SUMMARY:Sierra Club Book Club: Desert Solitaire
DESCRIPTION:From the Sierra Club –\nWe’ll be meeting to discuss the book “Desert Solitaire” by Edward Abbey. This book has been suggested to read by other nature-lovers and Amazon.com\, multiple times over and over again. So I’m pleased to read this book. It is up there with great works of environmental literature as Silent Spring. It’s said to be on of the books that transformed the genre of naturalist studies into manifestoes for social change. \nAmazon.com describes is as: “Written while Abbey was working as a ranger at Arches National Park outside of Moab\, Utah\, Desert Solitaire is a rare view of one man’s quest to experience nature in its purest form.\nThrough prose that is by turns passionate and poetic\, Abbey reflects on the condition of our remaining wilderness and the future of a civilization that cannot reconcile itself to living in the natural world as well as his own internal struggle with morality. As the world continues its rapid development\, Abbey’s cry to maintain the natural beauty of the West remains just as relevant today as when this book was written.” \nOctober’s book will be “Walkable City: How Downtown Can Save America\, One Step at a Time”\, by Jeff Speck. You’re going to want to read this. GoodReads says\, “In this essential new book\, Speck reveals the invisible workings of the city\, how simple decisions have cascading effects\, and how we can all make the right choices for our communities.” \nAt the end of every book club meeting we discuss possible next books and vote on them. \n*We’re meeting at the “Rock Garden” picnic tables. These are located uphill from the Zilker Hillside Theater*

The story follows the memories of swimmers such as John Henry Faulk exploring the little-known history of Barton Springs before\, during and after the time of racial segregation in Austin. \nCity of Austin environmental educators and local environmental groups will be on hand before the screening to talk about how you can get involved in community efforts to support the Springs\, creeks and aquifer through volunteering and internships. \nWe will gather at 7:15 p.m. (near the big tree at the south entrance\, Azie Morton (formerly Robert E. Lee) Road. The screening will begin at full dark and last approximately 40 minutes. Bring a chair or blanket to sit on. Before or after the screening\, take a swim in the Springs! \nAbout Living Springs: Many stories emanate from the spring-fed water of Barton Springs. Using the power of a multi-linear\, user-driven format\, viewers navigate through a virtual underwater environment\, meeting artists and scientists\, historic figures\, poets and preachers who share their perspectives and their passions about Austin’s most beloved natural resource. Living Springs is the newest documentary from Austin Past and Present producer\, Karen Kocher. Living Springs. For more information visit our website livingspringsaustin.org

SUMMARY:PARK(ing) Day ATX
DESCRIPTION:From the City of Austin Transportation Department –\nParking spaces can be your playground for a day! Austin Transportation invites the public to transform parking spaces into temporary miniature parks\, or “parklets\,” for PARK(ing) Day on Friday\, Sept. 21. PARK(ing) Day is an annual\, worldwide event that promotes public engagement and dialogue on the need for public\, open spaces in urban areas. Austin residents have created numerous parklets of different shapes\, sizes and uses on PARK(ing) Days past\, and Austin Transportation encourages the public to continue this creative dialogue this year. \nWant to organize a parklet? Be sure to read the application packet for instructions on permit request and proper parklet setup: bit.ly/parkingdayatx18. The deadline for submission is Monday\, Sept. 17. Participants must pay $35 for the permit fee and an additional usage fee for the parking space\, which may range from $10 to $16 per space\, depending on the location. See the application packet for approvals required from adjacent homes and/or businesses. \nFor more information on the application process\, please contact Paloma Amayo-Ryan at 512-974-1150 or paloma.amayo-ryan@austintexas.gov. This year\, we have engaged Heyden Walker at Black + Vernooy Architects to support community members interested in doing a PARK(ing) Day installation. If you’d like a partner\, design support\, or need volunteers\, you may email her at heyden@blackvernooy.com. \nTo ensure safety and accessibility\, parklet installations should follow these conditions: \n• Parking spaces must be delineated with a series of gripper cones (orange traffic cones); cones must be between 28 and 48 inches in height and cannot be attached to each other with string or ribbon.\n• Advertising\, vending or amplified sound activities are not permitted.\n• Sidewalk or crosswalk paths must not be obstructed. \nVisitors are welcome to stop by and interact with these installations. Follow #PARKingDayATX on social media for updates on the day. \nContinue to check back here for a list of participants and their parklet locations.

SUMMARY:SFC: Introduction to Food Gardening (2-Class Series)
DESCRIPTION:From the Sustainable Food Center –\nIf you are a new gardener or new to gardening in Central Texas\, and if you are looking for a holistic introduction to organic food growing\, then this Sustainable Food Center class is just for you. Taught by expert food gardeners\, this 2-part series combines hands-on activities and classroom discussion to provide participants with the knowledge and skills needed to start and maintain an organic and sustainable food garden. Whether you hope to garden in a yard\, on a balcony\, or at a community garden\, this class series will give you a strong foundation for growing your own food.\n\nClass 1: On day one participants will develop their observation skills by taking a guided tour through the Teaching Garden and the adjacent community garden. They will also learn what it means to garden organically\, sunlight and soil needs of vegetable gardens\, and you work together to weed\, amend and plant one of the beds in SFC’s Teaching Garden.\n\nClass 2: Day two is devoted to composting and to organic pest and disease management. We begin with a bug hunt then continue with a discussion of environmentally-friendly ways to control pests and diseases\, as-well-as different composting systems and a hands-on activity. Participants will also learn all about watering\, from the basics of watering seeds and transplants to water conservation.\n\nParticipants also take home a 45-page manual produced by SFC and designed specifically for Central Texas food growers.\n\n-Class participants must be 16 and older. Youth ages 12-15 may attend with purchase of an additional ticket and close parent/guardian supervision during class.\n-Registration closes 48 hours before class.
